    First video I’ve seen on melamine lacquer that makes sense. 👏👏👏

    Thank you so much for the video. I'm always looking for ways to widen my knowledge and abilities on the lathe. As a subscriber to this channel, I have successfully made rings, handles, and pens that look professionally made! So please keep up the great work and make more content like these videos. Oh, and I might just have to get some of this melamine lacquer and try this method! 😊

    Appreciate seeing this. This is a different approach to applying Melamine Lacquer than I've seen in other videos and looks like it eliminates the need to sand back the finish after applying multiple coats and allowing them to cure. I'm going to try this with pens as this looks much more efficient. While the solvents in Melamine Lacquer are high fume, they are much less acrid than CA finish.

    Mike, I can't thank you enough for this video. For my Christmas ornaments and bottle openers this year I used your process but with Mylands friction polish instead of the melamine lacquer. Every single one of them came out perfect and the clear wax polish is a product that I had never used but it is superior to the other waxes I've used in the past.

    Thanks for reminding me that high gloss is not the most important goal and that seeing the wood grain is really nice. I'm using this finish for pens and I really like the attractive and practical durability that it gives. I have been using Dr Kirk's Scratch Free and then a quick acetone wipe to remove the wax before applying the Melamine sanding sealer and lacquer. I have used a 50-50 mix of Deft lacquer and lacquer thinner with good results in the past, but it takes a lot of coats. This Melamine process is much quicker. My only problem, following Mike's instructions, has been having to change the belts on the lathe during the product application. I'm using a Craft Supplies, Artisan 1420 lathe that I recently purchased.

    What kind of rags are you using? They rip like paper towel but look lint free. I’ve loved your Tried and True and Mylands videos.

    Thank you!! This is the first coherent explanation of how to use Melamine Lacquer that I have ever seen. Would the process change on something like a decorative bowl?

    • @CraftSuppliesUSA

      I would pour some into a cup and brush it on with a nice painters brush. I would also sand lightly between coats as brush lines are more apparent on larger projects. -Mike 😊

    I did one guitar with this last winter because i was ablemto finish in my basement...im about to try it again...any advice to being able to tint the sealer or finish and or can a water based grain filler like aqaucoat be used underneath?

    I was always taught that melamine lacquer shouldn’t be shaken as it introduces small air bubbles into the lacquer.

    I guess it’s the perfect finish for urns?

    Nicely done. Curious on how the handle is mounted on the lathe?

    • @CraftSuppliesUSA
      @CraftSuppliesUSA  Před 6 měsíci +1

      It is mounted on the Ring Turning Chuck. Here's a link: woodturnerscatalog.com/p/72/7070/artisan-Ring-Turning-Chuck

      @@CraftSuppliesUSA much appreciated. Interesting use of this chuck system for mounting handles. Is it fair to say this is like using a bottle stopper mandrel for a handle or am I missing something?

    This looks like a great option for a high gloss finish without the plastic coating of CA. Thanks for showing it off. Is it sensitive to the type/brand of sanding sealer used beneath it? I mostly have shellac-based stuff here. I wasn't sure if I needed to switch over to the cellulose sealer for this finish.

    • @CraftSuppliesUSA
      @CraftSuppliesUSA  Před 6 měsíci

      The shellac sealer may become soluble once you put melamine lacquer on top which can lead to "crazing". It doesn't always occur however. I would recommend testing it on a scrap piece first then go from there. -Mike 😊

    • @tonyblanco305
      @tonyblanco305 Před 6 měsíci

      That makes perfect sense. Given that, it's probably not worth ruining pieces. I'll try the finish but do it with your recommended sealer. Thanks for the fast response!@@CraftSuppliesUSA

    Can you use a brush on bigger stuff like bowls?
