Turning a Utility Box 2.0 (Woodturning Project How-To)
Coin Box Blanks - woodturnerscatalog.com/products/cherry-coin-box-project-blank
Mike Nish expands on the popular project of the Utility Box with a new version - the Utility Box 2.0. Every aspect of the original Utility Box is reimagined and refined, taking this from a beginner project to an intermediate one for a larger and more ornate box.
He shows in detail each step of the turning process: turning the box outside and inside, shaping the lid for a perfect fit, turning decorative beads, inlaying a knob turned from a different species of wood, and applying a finish to the piece.

Are rings like this able to get wet? Maybe not completely submerged in water but would rain or hand washing damage the wood?
what paste did you use to stabilize the torn out grain? thanks so much
I used Scratch Free, here's a link to it: woodturnerscatalog.com/collections/waxes/products/dr-kirks-scratch-freee-woodturners-polishing-wax?variant=40619031330839
thanks so very much
Thanks for the video! very informative.
I know nothing about wood burning and wondering what items I need for signing like Mike Nish does at 6:50. Great video by the way…I am inspired. Thanks Mike Nish, good to see you again.
Great video Mike and I really like the new design. The box looks much more refined and no longer looks like a beginner project. Thanks again for a great video.
Great video, it is easy to follow what why and how. One thought I had, could one use some guitar string holding it in a loop with one side of the loop to the piece and burn into those rings on the bottom? One would have to hold the loop at just the right angle to the work, not 90 degrees.
i did this at school, thanks so much for your tuto !
About the center position on the diagonal. If you transfer the position as shown you wil get at the halfway position anyway. Maybe with a compas?
Great video, lovely bowl, very informative, well presented, thanks very much.
Anyone ever try stabilizing plywood, softwoods, or even bamboo?
Yeah, if you stabilize and dye plywood or OSB it actually turns out pretty cool.
I know this is 7 years old, but I'll be a beginner to turning soon, can these be made with carbide tools as well? Yeah I expect some pros to get on me about carbide.. oh well.
Yes, absolutely! Have fun turning! -Mike 😊
Like this form much better than the box 1.0. Thank you.
G'Day from Australia!! Another sensational video from you Mike!! Love all the helpful tips and suggestions throughout the whole video. Your video tutorials are jam packed with great ideas and even the occasional, "Don't do what I did!" Haven't we all!!! LOL!! Cheers from Downunder!!
Another nice video. I like the upgrades and improved styling. A very nice looking project.
Great demo Mike, love your style! I will get out there and try the box!
Tried to purchase the bead cutter, but there are no "bare" handles available. Must one buy an Easy Wood tool of some sort, remove the existing cutter and replace with the beading cutter(s)?
That is correct, the cutters fit all Easy Wood Tools Ci2 tools.
Very nice project. You describe the process well. Take care and stay safe. From: Petawawa, Ontario, Canada.
informative and inspirational. nice one 👍
That's quite nice. Thank you.
I bought this ring boring head, however the dial WILL NOT TURN. It wiggle from 5 o"clock to 7 o'clock, but will not turn 360 degrees as shown in the video. What can I do?
Loosen the 3 grub screws on the bottom side of the boring head to adjust the side to side tension. Please give us a call if you still need assistance. Thank you! 1-800-551-8876
I just bought the wen 4444 4 jaw chuck. For some reason when I mount my bowl to turn the inside, the blank comes out of the chuck. I thought maybe it was my tenon length being to short. Maybe not enough wood for the jaws to grab. Tried that and that did not work. Didn't know if anyone else had trouble with their chuck.
I have heard people complaining of the grip strength with that chuck. It is a fairly small chuck, what size of bowls are you doing with it?
It's a small bowl like a 4 inch bowl
My man Mike getting some likes in just a few hours. Keep up the great work sir!
Beautiful
Thank you!
this is incredible instruction Kirk - many thanks from Conor in Ireland
thanks - that was helpful! I wondered if I should do more than one coat on bottle stoppers. I think I'll go back and try a couple more coats on ones I thought were finished.
I’m on my second Burnmaster. The reset button popped out on my first one but I had it for 8 years. This new one “Hawk” I haven’t had it for a year and the button popped out. I’ve tried to reset but the button is not responsive. Is there a way to fix this issue or do I have to ship it back for a refund?
I haven't heard of any issues with that button coming out. Give us a call at 1-800-551-8876 and we'll get you sorted out.
Very good instruction. Thank you
No face shield while turning, and no dust mask while sanding!
No matter how many times i do this my cutters can barely cut anything, im perplexed. They arent cheap amazon inserts or anything
Thanks Mike for a wonderful tutorial. My chucks are in need of a good cleaning. Time to get started.
Complimenti, lavoro spettacolare.
Instead of paying that much for a "slow-speed" grinder I think I'll just slow down my regular grinder to match the rpm's of the slow speed one. All it takes is a 20 amp 0-130v variac and an rpm app on my phone. Variacs are less than $100 and I already have one myself.
Salve, quanto costa e dove si compra
The alumilite is a Urethane Resin, not Epoxy ;)
Great video!
Old time turner here and I am soo against wood being wasted like this.
I like this guy.
I've been turning for about 10 years. I still go back and watch this video probably twice a year and still pick up something new each time.....
I have this item and I am not thrilled about it. Why did Craft Supplies sell me one where the hub has no dovetail angle is beyond me. My chuck would have grip it a lot better than the hub just being straight.
Unfortunately they do that to fit a wider range of chuck jaws from different manufacturers. If you aren't happy with the chuck and would like to return it please let us know, we'd love to get you taken care of. Thank you!
Good after just been watch some of your video’s, my question I’m going to turning some Christmas ornaments and I like the finish of the Yorkshire grit but it I wanted to paint pictures on the ornaments will the Yorkshire grit rub the paint off of the ornaments or would be gentle enough. Your thoughts thanks Walter
So would the Yorkshire grit remove any paint I put them or would is seal it in.
New to your channel what name brand tools do you use . Yours is s very good teaching channel. Mike
I use the Henry Taylor M42 Stay Sharp tools for the most part. -Mike 😊
Thanks Kirk. Very instructional with safe turning. Very enjoyable.
Where i can to get it cause of me in indonesia
Very nice Handle looks great. I like the pop ups that show tools and products. Do you clean the handle between grits with the denature alcohol?
Modern Masters does not work. They sent me a replacement kit that didn't work either and finally gave me a refund.
Nice handle . I always lay a piece of newspaper on my lathe bed when using any aerosols on mounted turnings
Would you consider carbide tools for turning this hybrid handle?
Carbide would work great, especially the negative rake cutters.
Hi Mike, great video. Thank you for your time...a couple of question, would you prefer Alumilte over Mas? And what size was the pressure pot? Thank you again for producing such great content.
