    Just picked up my Jaguar XJ R-Sport today, and thank this video for the inspiration. What an absolutely beautiful beast.

    Great video and insight into a car I'm currently looking at. I'm split between a BMW 640d and Jag XJ. Big saloons and Gran Coupe type cars have been my favourite since my early twenties. All my mates wanted an M3 or a RS4 but there was me dreaming of an XJ 😂.

    Good car, despite the diesel engine. I drive a Portfolio, 2018 3.0 SC petrol 340bhp about to be mapped. And a 2017 XFS 3.0 SC petrol 380bhp, both lovely. As a start-up channel pretty good. Maybe do a little homework for us petrol heads, and feel much more confident when chatting. You will have a good channel. I hope this is helpful advice. Looking forward to future vids, don't give up

    Nice review. I've just bought the 3.0ltr supercharged portfolio with only 16,000 miles on it also the 2013 model. I'd add to your review by saying as a drivers car it's phenomenal, it's big but it wraps around you and the steering is precise and gives good feedback. There's dynamic mode which sharpens everything up, throttle response gearbox response and suspension but even without that on it's amazingly flat through corners. It really inspires confidence.
    Mine is the indigo blue with the same two tone interior as yours and the smell of new leather is intoxicating. I'm getting used to the infotainment system as I had a 2008 XF premium luxury before and the infotainment on that was a little more user friendly in as much as you could control more aspects of the car through it, but if you're thinking that the XJ is just a bigger XF then think again. Having had the two the XF is good but the XJ is next level in every department.
    I've had it with diesels though, my last diesel was my Lexus IS220D sport and the main dealer ruined it on a service by overfilling it with oil, that led to DPF issues and injector issues, they denied responsibility so I was stuck. Also with the Jag you have to keep the ad blu topped up which main dealers often forget on a service, if you don't you'll get engine management issues and your DPF won't regenerate causing breakdown. Stick with the petrol, the 3.0ltr supercharged is a great option with 340 bhp and similar torque figures, I think 370 ftlbs. The diesels are cheap for sure but if you spend the extra on a petrol you won't regret it in the longer term. To wrap up, I've totally fallen in love with mine and would thoroughly recommend buying one.

    I'm looking at getting a used XJ. I have heard the V6 is more reliable than the V8. Sure, the V8 is cool for power, but I also don't want to spend all my money in repairs. Aftermarket warranty is where it's at, though. I don't know that a used diesel is available here in Canada, so I guess petrol/gas it is. I actually prefer the older style of Jag, particularly the front end, because it was much more distinctively Jaguar, but they're still beautiful cars and I like that they got hooked up with the touch screen navigation early on, while some Mercedes still don't offer the MBUX and their older system is so outdated and frustrating. Obviously, I'm looking at getting an aftermarket warranty on the Jag I do get, but any tips you have would be really welcomed. I love European and British cars, but I know the UK stuff does have a bad reputation for reliability. I wish they'd get it together and bring back the XJ with a more reliability model.

    • @motorshedsteve
      @motorshedsteve  Před 11 měsíci

      Cars from Jaguar Land Rover are famed for having electrical problems these days. Think the RRs are more unreliable than the Jags though. Mine never skipped a beat apart from towards the end of ownership the whole electrics used to shut down sometimes for a split second, not enough to be an issue, but was disconcerting, felt like it might get worse. In all honestly though the German stuff is no better though I've had a newer 7 series for 2 years and it's been plagued with problems, electrical, components failing, all expensive stuff, so it seems pretty inescapable. If you get a bad one you get a bad one, not much you can do to prevent it. Extended warranties are okay but read the small print as they're not all created equal. Some aren't worth the paper they're written on.
      Personally I used the like the old XJ but then they brought out the smaller x type which ruined its credibility and made the looks common. The last XJ still has such presence on the road, looks great, I still admire them when I see them and it's been 4 years since I owned one. Worth the risk in owning one, you'll love it!

    The engine on my 2014 jaguar XJL died at 126K miles. (All routine and regular maintenance performed meticulously). The dealership said I could get a new engine for $25,000. I spent over $13,000 in repair and maintenance in the three years I had this car. Now I have a 4100 pound paperweight in my driveway.

    • @motorshedsteve
      @motorshedsteve  Před 3 lety +4

      Definitely the bmw. The drive is superb, it's better looking and much better made.
      The XJ was a great car, it had presence and felt classy. The seats were great and the interior was beautiful. It could handle well enough too. The downside was the reliability of the electrics, like most JLR products. I used to get false warnings flash up all the time and shortly before I got rid of it the car would completely shut down for a split second, usually when first pulling away. I never fully trusted it. When I bought the XJ the car I really wanted was the 6 series GC but it was too expensive at the time. I had the Jag for 14 months and then swapped it for the bmw as prices fell by around 10k in that time for 4 or 5 year old models and into affordability for me. I actually only had it for 7 months before I had to trade it in because it was quite low and my heavily pregnant wife couldn't get in and out of it easily. I miss it every day, its the best car I've ever owned, and probably the best diesel engine around. I would love an 8 series GC in a couple of years if they fall as rapidly as the 6 did, once my son can get in and out of cars himself 😄. I would say the best thing is to try both, but I didn't love the bmw immediately, it felt like a bit of a downgrade from the XJ, mainly because the jag had things like auto boot, keyless entry etc which the bmw didn't have. Spec varies a lot because most stuff is optional, so just be aware of that. Once I got more familiar with the 6 though and felt its character i was completely smitten, loved driving it everywhere. If you go for the bmw, go for m sport trim. If you go for the jag go for nothing lower than a portfolio. Hope that helps.

      With an XJ honestly I wouldn't bother with anything less than a Portfolio. This type of car needs the extras you get. It's a luxury car. Sound system is better, you get blind spot monitor and heated and cooled seats. Nicer wheels too. Can't remember what else, this was the first video I ever uploaded.

      Thank you. Yes it's a great car. The XJL is massive, the standard one is long enough, I used to struggle to get it in a parking space, can imagine the L would be a nightmare to park, just so long. If you're going from an XF you'll notice a massive increase in toys and quality. They have so much stuff as standard, like the led drivers display, soft close doors, parking camera, heated and electric everything.

    Is 100k too many miles to consider when purchasing a new one? It’s a 2016?

    • @motorshedsteve
      @motorshedsteve  Před 5 lety +5

      100k for a 3 year old car is a massive amount, however it can only be gentle motorway miles at that. The diesel engines are pretty good as long as they've had proper maintenance. I'd look for full service history as a must. Just sold mine after 18 months and it never skipped a beat. You are likely looking at a bargain, just bear it mind that when you sell it, it will be at the bottom end of the market and many buyers don't even consider a car that has done over 100k no matter how old. If you plan to keep for a while I would not be put off by the mileage as long as the car ran smooth and wasn't scruffy. Bearing in mind that buyers for a very high mileage, 3yr old XJ will be scarce, you should be able to use this to your advantage to get a good deal on it. If it is for sale at a garage, they will have paid bottom dollar for it so don't let them fleece you.

    Really enjoyed this. I'm currently looking to buy either a used Jaguar XJ or Audi A8 as three year old models are priced very similarly. Which would you recommend? I like the Quattro system in the Audi as I do 20k miles a year and previously owned an A6 but prefer the portfolio interior.

    • @motorshedsteve
      @motorshedsteve  Před 5 lety +6

      Hi Dean, Thank you for your comments. I considered the A7 (and briefly the A8), Merc CLS, and 7 series before I bought the Jag. I ruled the Germans out because they were all pretty boring in style compared to the Jag (apart from the CLS), they just didn't feel special enough to me. The CLS came close but the 220d I tested was gutless. My advice would be to take your time and test them all, if you're anything like me the Jag should feel the most special. It gives you that warm fuzzy feeling when you approach it and it's so comfortable. The drive is also excellent for such a big car thanks to the aluminium chassis making it lighter than it looks. I've recently considered swapping it for something else but I can't think of anything that comes close for the money. One of the things that put me off Audis is the fact that they only seem to produce black interiors. In my opinion a lighter interior always looks a lot more luxurious. Think how often you see a Rolls Royce with a black interior.

    • @deansummerton2577
      @deansummerton2577 Před 5 lety +2

      @@motorshedsteve Thank you so much. I've done a lot of research and agree with your opinions. It's probably the Quattro that favours the Audi but everything else points me to the Jaguar. I can't afford an S class and am not too keen on a 7 series. I think the Jaguar is hard to beat on pure value for money and spec inside. Thank you so much for the feedback.
