  • This was the first leg of Hanne's cross country flight needed to satisfy the long cross country requirement for the Private Pilots license. I forgot to plug the ATC audio in so it's me doing a bad job of being all the controllers. Sorry about that.

Ya, I think she did a really nice job on this flight. There were a lot of first time things she did that day. Filing the flight plan over the phone, not on a computer. Opening the flight plan with Seattle Radio and then getting flight following with Whidbey Approach all which seemed to go fairly well. I'm impressed!

This makes me think back on the day I did my xcountry. I'm a old man now but still have my head together, still dream about the days I to was up in the air. Just me and the Good Lord. Flying always gave me a peaceful feeling, a high better than any drug could. Thanks for sharing this.

Between Hanne and Capt. Scott, they produced an excellent video here and a few others. Each one gives a true feeling of what flying can be when an astute student and an excellent instructor are paired. I started my flying a half century ago and have had very few students that showed as much promise as does Hanne in these videos.
I hope that Hanne was able to continue and that Capt. Scott feels pride in where she goes and in this series of videos. My congratulations to both of them.

Having flown around Seattle a lot, it brings back memories. Also, I feel a huge amount of pride to see a young pilot like her, and remember all the things that go through your head when actually getting to go off by yourself and the huge amount of responsibility it is to navigate those distances. Just cool to watch where she is looking and seeing the amount of confidence that has been instilled in her by her instruction. And of course, she is VERY pretty, so that makes it more fun to watch. Great to watch the elements of a cross country flight unfold. Thanks for a great vid.

Hanne, Scott, thanks for posting these initial solo videos. Both myself and my 16yo daughter are taking lessons for our licences at the moment and I find the radio coms on these vids and then how Hanne reacts to them, are some of the best for those of us trying to learn. Its also great for a young woman to see another young woman in command of the aircraft as here in the UK general aviation can often seem like an old boys club. Hoping to visit the US soon and get some flying done in some decent weather. Cheers!

I don't get it. You're saying students shouldn't be allowed to go on solo cross country flights. How are you supposed to learn anything if your hands always held. The instructor determines if the student is capable then off they go. You're statement is rather cryptic

Must do solo cross country trips. As a teenage student pilot in the 1950s, I had to make two cross country solos to get my cross country qualification. Each trip had to be three point landings (and collect written verification at each point). Got caught in a summer rain shower on last leg of second trip. Quite an experience when your plane has no artificial horizon indicator and no climb/descend indicator. Try 500 feet alt. to maintain visual with the ground. Did OK.

Hanne did a great job, I have a tip for her that I use(d) when I was a new pilot and when I was working on my PPL.. Even though I know she is familiar with this airfield as it is her home base, I think she would find it helpful to have "disposable" printed airport diagrams on her knee board that she can actually write on/draw on for taxi/hold short instructions for that specific flight. One day Hanne could find herself in busy/unfamiliar territory. Nothing wrong with prog taxi though too.. :))

Awesome. Congrats to Hanne. I love how she got the stall buzzer to sound just on touch down. Wish my landings were half as good as that. My instructor once told me that a great landing is when the stall horn sounds just as the main wheels make contact with the ground. Some pilots seem to be able to make it work consistently each time. I think I've only been lucky to make 2 such landings before. But here's to hoping. Do keep the videos coming :)

I don’t cut throttle until main gear touches down, maintaining landing speed or few knots above while descending is the key; that will insure a smooth landing when you flare rather than dropping the plane on the ground. You wanna merge in with the ground smoothly not hitting it hardly.

When you hear someone referencing "with information (phonetic number - ie. Juliet, November, Alpha, Bravo, etc.)" they are telling the controller that they have checked the Automated Terminal Information System and have the current up-to-date information provided (wind speed, active runway for landing/dep, altimeter setting, and airport obstruction data (vehicles, construction, taxiway closures, etc.) This information changes frequently, so they change phonetic when they update info.

Nice job. Funny how all the ATC guys sound just like the guy at the beginning of the video in part 1. :)

It's never easy to set up a multi-camera shoot in an aircraft cockpit (I've done a few for the Discovery Channel) so congratulations to the producer.
Congratulations also to Hanne for a very creditable cross-country flight .
I realise the workload is heavy, but I just worry a bit about how much time new solo pilots like Hanne spend looking down at their notes and charts. ....There's always a danger of another Hanne flying towards her ...and doing just the same .

Why can't I be a pilot's instructor, flying around with her ? LOL Great video

I like how you talk to the same controller the entire flight. ....kidding... but way to add in the "ATC" audio. If flying doesn't work out try film!
Lovin those ANA 787s in the background.

One thing on the polarized sunglasses. I have heard recommendations that polarized sunglasses specifically not be used for flying. The reason being that aircraft traffic is easier to spot with non-polarized glasses because the glare is not filtered out that is reflecting off the aircraft wings and/or fuselage. Although if you're flying over a lot of water at sunrise/sunset I can definitely see polarized glasses being helpful. Just something to think about.
