We’re all guilty, even the pros, of occasionally making fundamental training mistakes.
More often than not, we’ve come into triathlon with some level of experience in one of the disciplines, but the other two can end up being a bit of trial-and-error. Which is totally understandable.
Having witnessed and even made some of these mistakes ourselves, we have compiled a list of the most common ones and will be explaining how to avoid them.

At Uni we had a lot of international athletes doing their preseason training at the sport science department. Many of the coaches told me that they actually plan their training around their recovery, not the other way around. Better recovery, more ability to improve.
I train 90% on running, 10% on cycling and no swimming. Maybe I'll do a triathlon one day...
Been involved with most of these mistakes, and yes, many more besides. However, videos like this have helped me become better at avoiding mistakes. Thanks GTN, keep up the great content.
Something Odd there’s nothing wrong with making these mistakes. I’ve learnt that way myself
Great tips and spot on👍
One hell of a training week and CTL in the TrainingPeaks calendar at 3:10, Mark :-o
I feel personally attacked by the first one. Haha. Nice video. For sure have done a number of these.
Sam Cohen 😂😂
Same, for me it‘s running😂
I run at home and for track/xc, go to swim practice when I’m in season, and bike when I don’t wanna run. So I like never bike
I probably do around 60% running, 40% cycling and 0% swim because I'm a duathlete 🙃
I’m probably going to spend too much time cycling and not enough swimming/running when I start my cycle commute to work (26km each way) 😬
9:18 is that in Nottingham? :) I have seen that boat..
Since you guys partnered with Training Peaks, maybe help explain what Fitness, Form, and Fatigue are(?). How to properly comprehend those three values; although I understand their definitions, but to me they're still just numbers and I've no frame of reference
Alex Shih we have actually featured a lot of these in a more detailed ‘geeky’ video. I didn’t want to delve into the science for this video
I am only getting back into it. Training about 3 months. Race in 3 weeks. I try get 1 swim in a week of about 1.5k. Try for 2 cycles per week and 3 runs. Might do a little run off the bike to get legs back use to it. Try to do the 4 week build/ recovery but with a 3 year old child it's hard to fit it all in. Use to do 15 hours per week. Lucky to get 5 now
And I got a new set of race wheels last week, they definitely make me faster. Easier than training...😁
This video can save thousands of Triathletes!
Here’s a funny mistake. I just did a triathlon race this weekend and someone accidentally mistook a hair shampoo sample as a gel. Did not go well, messed his guts up. Make sure to double check it’s a gel not a hair sham-💩 sample 🤦♀️
Definitely need to work on transitions and stop taking my sweet ol time getting through! :)
Ever since this guy came to the channel, the quality of the presentations has improved. He could be the next James Bond. Likable guy.
What was that training log you had open? That looked very interesting.
That's Trainingpeaks.
Yep, we use TrainingPeaks here at GTN 🤙
Did GTN mean to leave the 9:00 voice over in the final cut ? still great video Mark cheers
So when i train 10 hours a week i have to do.
2 hours for the swim
5 hours on the bike
3 hours for the run
Mark
mark ankone I’d say that’s a pretty well balanced week 👌
@@markthrelfall3577
Hi Mark
So when i am correct, i have to do from these training hours to do 80% slow pace (basic)
20% interval
And when i have a race and i am going to do taper training
The basic training is going back from 80 % to 50-60%
And the interval is going up from 20% to 50% ?
mark ankone yeh sounds pretty good, make sure to lower mileage and interval distances when tapering 👍
@@tomwebb8801 😁 thanks
I started learning how to swim 5 months ago and now do a 15min swim in a sprint triathlon. Is this good I don’t know much about swim times thanks
That is very good for someone who learned swimming recently.
The last one speaks to me too much at the moment, I've had a fracture for 3 months now because I wouldn't stop training
I ride more but that's because I get knee pain running often and no pools local and no time to go more than once or twice a week. 😭
I am doing my first triathlon in july 1st 2021 any tips on t1 and t2
Can't give any tips since I will also do my first in August 2021, but I'm interested to hear what event you're planning to do?
Should strength/gym sessions be counted apart from the percentages Mark gave?
Jose Castrillo yeah i should really include it as well, but definitely try to fit this in too. I often suggest either one 60min session, or two 45 min sessions per week. Obviously all dependent on available time
@@markthrelfall3577 Thanks mate!
@@markthrelfall3577 I'm definitely guilty of skipping too many strength workouts. Need to be sure to include them in your training plan!
Guilty of too many races.
same here!
denial - i big one for me xD
Shoutout to Triathlon Taren🤙
PartyChancho 😂 or our other 6 mistakes videos...
...that are arguably a lot better than me trying to do sketches on my own 😛
@@markthrelfall3577 i like both channels Mark, no need to get sensitive on an alt account, just spreading the love.
PartyChancho not at all. Any media for triathlon is great. I was just stating that we have many other mistake videos too
Wish these videos had time stamps
I do 9%running 1% swim and 90%biking I use strava
Is it overambitous to do an Ironman with 18 in less Than ten hours?
Niki #0K it’s not impossible. Obviously don’t expect to perform to your best ability, but you’ll definitely be ok. You’ll need to be super focussed though, and make sure you really stick to your plan if all you have is less than 10hrs per week. You’ll be fine. Best of luck. I’d love to hear how it goes
@@markthrelfall3577 Thank you Mark, but I meant to finish in less Than ten hours! I train about 20 hours a weeks with a revovery week every 4 weeks.
Is this dangerous for the joints and stuff?
it happen in me
Hi, I just started competing in duathalons and triathalons. I’m 13 and I only have a mountain bike. I have lasted but I think I need an upgrade. I am working and saving up. I have an account on Go fund me. I called it “fund for a new tri bike” if u could help me out that would be great!
Hi
at the moment I do 100% bike because the pools are closed and I am injured so that I can't run
CT Fletcher would be disappointed in me if i ever took a rest day.
yum
Actually i think if you do short distances training more open Water swimming than running And riding a bike might be quite efficient cause swimming is making the most muscles work. Kinda logic.
I take the train?
What about not training enough 😩😩😩
Take rest day 1 times a week.
First!
Good job!
Speaking of mistakes never I mean never go to a Chili Cook off a day before your race !!! By the way there's a guy at the company I work at named Lucio everyone calls him The Octopus(he should do well in the swimming part of the race!) Anyhow Lucio says he never makes mistakes !!!!
The UI on that software is ugly af
