In 1970, Chaparral Racing changed the game in Can Am with the 2J "Sucker Car". It had the grip to literally blow the competition away...heh. Designer Jim Hall built a car that even Sir Jackie Stewart loved. it was a revolutionary new way to approach down force and if it waste for the McLaren teams complaints, we would have seen it race for many years. we take a look at the tech and engineering that made this car faster than anything else in the 1970 Can Am season. take a look, and find out just how much this car "Sucks".

What I find sad about racing is... that always happens! I wish there were a no limits racing series where the only way a vehicle could get banned for was cheating. Innovation is all about doing something better or doing something differently, if you ban anything because it's different or better because someone else didn't think of it, then you end up with formula 1, no wonder F1 is dying.
The only major limitations I would want to see are:
      -No cheating (duh)
-You and your vehicle can not self inflict damage or cause damage to drivers, people, or other vehicles. (Basically the idea of racing is not only fun and competition, but also innovation. It's pointless to innovate technology that causes extreme harm to itself or others, this doesn't mean said tech couldn't be made harmless, and should be immediately banned. Also damaging someone's vehicle is cheating.)
-Limitations on spending for the design (this does not account for spare parts, only the vehicle and the parts installed. Some teams are not as affluent and cannot throw nearly as much money at the problem as others can, not to mention you should be trying to improve quality while maximizing savings, not burning cash cause its easy, this is about innovation.)
-Limitations on how many cars and spare parts you can bring to the race. (You should always bring spare parts to a race, if something can go wrong, it will. But this doesn't mean you should bring a endless supply of a part because you did a crap job at designing something your parts should be quality not quantity, you're trying to reward those who work smarter and harder, same goes for putting as many cars into a race as possible. It's just to stop people like Ford from sending endless waves of cars at his Shortcomings like he did in Le Mans.)
-Safety. This doesn't need any explaining, Safety.
These should be the only rules you see in the rule book.

Lancia Stratos, the first purpose built rally car (like, I know that they ran Mini's and Alpine's and stuff, but they had other purposes. Like Mini was meant to be cheap, but madlad John Cooper thought "hey dis boi light, light mean fast and agile." but when Lancia thought up of the Stratos they only had one thing in mind... CRONCHING INTO TREES AND ROCKS AT OVER 120 MPH!!!)
Also, the 80s were my favourite decade. Like the Audi Quattro, the GLORIOUS twincharged Delta S4, Porsche 962C, which holds the Nordschleife lap record TO THIS DAY! (mainly because fast stuff ain't allowed on Nords anymore, but still... Crazy), the Renault turbo Formula One and Rally cars, which killed no replacement for displacement, Ferrari's paddle shift concept, invented by the legendary Rory Byrne, which is now basically in every race car ever. Also, Gr.B and Gr.C with Formula One as well, took the tech from the 70's, added steroids and LSD to it, and brought some new tech as well... And then we all realised we were all gonna die and started making everything tame. Tame, but REAL FAST!!! And then some dude said "Hey... Anyone want *I N S T A N T* torque???" And now their adding whizz machines to everything and there's TWO entire series based on them and many more combining the ICE and whizz machines as well.

3:41 howitzer ≠ tank... those are two different things. The M109 is a self-propelled howitzer aka artillery, as in, it indirectly fires a cannon at its target (sometimes over terrain/mountains, beyond the line-of-sight), whereas a tank, aka armor, fires its main gun directly at a target along line-of-sight. You’re close, but they’re two COMPLETELY different weapons with different tactics and strategies. Anyway, if you’re correcting yourself on exponential vs quadratic, I figured this would be a good distinction to make. Also... do a B2B episode on the M109A7! This crusty artillery vet would be quite pleased🤘

@@mhm925 similar concept but to the most advanced extreme.
So the Mercedes DAS (Dual Axis Steering) essentially the driver creates toe in by pulling the steering wheel towards them and vice versa.
So it is done at the drivers discretion and not necessarily for braking performance exclusively.
It aids the performance of the car in a variety of ways, whilst improved braking stability is one. It also helps put heat in the tires (more toe in means more friction).
Since it appears that it can be done whenever and to whatever extent the driver wants they can essentially fine tune the car for a straight or for a corner whilst going 300km/h.
Mercedes it still pretty tight lipped about it obviously but its a clear advantage particularly if the track conditions change with rain or temp etc.

The Aluminum Can Am big block Chevrolet is different from the ZL1 engines used in the 1969 COPO Camaros. Most people assumed that they were the same.
Even to this day, the 430 BB Chevy is not very well known. I see different info on these engines but from what I can tell, Chevy made the CanAm 430 from about 1968 to 1972.
The aluminum CanAm cast iron sleeve block used a large 4.440 in. bore siamese cyls design.
In 1968 it used a short stroke 3.47 in. crank to get 430 cu. in. and about 700hp on gas.
There was some info printed that the 430 Chevy was considered as a production engine for 1970 but was cancelled along with other 1970 engine options.
In 1969, it was available as a 430 cu in and also with 427 or 454 cranks to get a 465 or 495 cu in and over 750hp.
Chevy also built a Can Am block without the cast iron sleeves and they can go over 500 cu in.
Chevy engineering used the Can Am engine for research using the same siamese cyls design on the 400 cu in small block production engine.
The Alu engine block with no cast iron sleeves design was used in the Vega engine. They used a special cast iron coated piston to control wear.
The CanAm BB Chevy engine dominated CamAm racing late 60's to early 70's beating Ferrari, Porsche, and Ford, all who had more expensive exotic engines.
The 430 CamAm engine would rev like a 302 and was about the same weight installed.
Bill Grumpy Jenkins ran a CamAm engine in his 68 Camaro match racer and used that same 68 Camaro CanAm set-up to win the first ever Pro Stock race in 1970. Bill also ran the 430 in his 69 and 70 Camaro along with other engines.
A few other drag racers used the 430 Chevy.
here is a picture of Joe Frankel who ran one in a 69 Camaro back in the day

yeah man, love the F1 tech and would love a breakdown on some of it. the change of rim sizes for 2022 is super interesting, amazing they still run such small rims just to get the suspension effect from the tyres.

Jeremiah gives off great vibes. At least I feel that way. Thank you so much for elaborating on this lovely example of engineering art! I drove it occasionally in Gran Turismo PSP, and the fans definitely are quite intriguing. The Gordon Murray T50 also has an electrically-powered fan at the back, but the rest of the rationale for designing it harkens back to when cars actually required more driver involvement. Keep up with the videos, Donut! All of you are doing a marvellous job in entertaining us with automotive content!
