Hey all! Just wanted to leave a note on this video with some corrections that many have pointed out in the comments:
    - The game footage for this video was recorded about a month or two ago, and is on an older version of the game. Specifically the Renault FT's tracks being frozen was a bug of that older version that has since been fixed.
    - The Finnish T-50 in the game does have the addon armor represented. My mistake here was getting a little too carried away with rivet counting, literally. In photos I was comparing with they simply didn't look the same, and I also failed to notice if it actually looked like there was extra armor plating on the tank. To me it did not, and to be honest still doesn't, but I could be wrong on this.
    - The 8.8cm Flak truck was not used for AA. Which I don't recall claiming in the video but it is an important distinction that I think is worth saying here. In the video, I talk about the 8.8cm gun generically, as to be honest I really didn't know much about the 8.8cm Flak Truck. I wanted to use this video as the opportunity to learn more about it, and the 8.8cm in general.
    - Unfortunately I seemed to have committed a cardinal sin by using a T.E article for part of my research. So I would take everything I say on the 8.8cm with a large grain of salt. I was not aware that T.E was to be avoided like the plague lmao. (This also goes for my discussion of the Finnish Renault FT). In both these cases, the sources I used are in the description, so they can be checked by everyone.
    - At 19:46 I talk about the 37mm Bofors guns acquired by Finland from Poland. Yes, I am aware that the Bofors is Swedish, I was specifically referencing the Polish license production of the guns. The Finnish plans were to purchase the guns from Poland. I could have worded that better.
    - In reference to the Finnish Swastika. The game uses the roundel for censorship reasons because the company making the game is based in Germany, where there are obvious laws about that stuff. Of course I knew this, and mention in the video it was probably being done for censorship. The "The roundel is not accurate" thing was something I thought would be a funny running joke that I would keep mentioning it over and over.
As for its use in Finland, although most of Finland stopped using it after 1945, for the most part the main Finnish Air Force still does to this day.
    - Yes I mistook a KV-1 1942 for a KV-1S. The turret looked rounded enough to me, and I didn't know if it was me or a modelling mistake. Thankfully I can still correct in the edit!
    - Yes, I'm stupid for not using the editor or some other easier method of inspecting the tanks. I've simply never messed with the editor in any MoW game or GoH so wasn't confident, and didn't even know how to get to it. I always play conquest, so that's what I showed.
As always, I call myself an enthusiast, not an expert, because there is a lot I don't know. But criticism is the fuel of improvement so I thank everyone for their contributions to this video. I tend to say that I learn the most about a videos topic AFTER I release the video.
This comment will be a living thread and I'll edit it as more corrections come up. Thank you so much for watching!!

Edit: The video seems to have been recorded at the 1.039 version, the tracks were broken then. But they have fixed since the 1.039 hotfix the current version is 1.041.

21:15 Swastikas on Finnish tanks are replaced by a roundel because the publishing company for GOH (digitalmindsoft) is based in Germany, and because of German laws surrounding the display of symbols associated with the Nazi party when barbedwire studios (the devs of CTA:GOH) signed the publishing deal for the game they made a deal with digitalmindsoft to omit all Nazi symbolism from the game.
One of the devs from barbedwire talk more about the topic in this video at 20:15 - czcams.com/video/V7qQUHKw9vY/video.html

It has nothing to do with our laws, swastikas have been allowed in video games in Germany since 2018.
The video you linked has no mention of any laws, the interviewee states that its an entirely internal agreement between the developer and publisher and they choose to respect that agreement.

    Finn here.
The Finnish military adopted the use of the swastika as insignia before Germany did. The Finnish swastika was first adopted by the Finnish Air Force in 1918 and then soon after by the Finnish Defense Forces as well. In other words, it predates German use and is not affiliated with it.
The symbol used to mean the sun as well as good luck and was without much political connection. For instance, early aviators often used the swastika as a good luck symbol
This was a fun video and I enjoyed watching. Good work!

It does has a connection to Germany, although it only comes up after it is adopted. It was the insignia of a swedish nobleman that donated some of the first planes to the finnish airforce, with said nobleman later becoming a supported of the swedish nazi party and of Hitler.

If I remember correctly the 4,5 inch gun for the BT-42 did have a HEAT shell for antitank purposes but it performed poorly due to many desing flaws.
The HEAT shell desing was reverse engineered from a german HEAT shell and then scaled up to fit the correct caliber. They didn't get the rotationally activated fusing on the HEAT quite correct so it would often not fuse at all.
Quite sad that our only attempt at making a somewhat domestic tank didn't end so well.
    -A fan from Finland.

The German 88mm originally was designed for AA, but EVEN FURTHER you can trace its origins back to the naval SK L/45, and its predecessor the L/35. A common misconception is that it takes its design from Krupp's 7.7cm FlugabwehrKanone, which is where we get the abbreviation FlaK, thus flak guns, flak vests, etc. Like how LASER is an acronym, but now it just means the thing, and the acronym just makes you sound like a nerd at parties. Except if you know where the term Flak comes from, chances are you don't get invited to parties. I digress, basically, the original FlaK 16, Germany's first 88mm, was not a scaled up 7.7cm L/27, but instead a gun meant to be used on and against light vessels. German dreadnoughts were armed with it to deter torpedo boats and destroyers, and it was one of the larger guns to be fitted on prewar and WWI destroyers, notably seen on the Deutscheland class pre-dreadnought battleships, and the S-138 torpedo boats. So, there were AP rounds for 88mm guns as early as 1900 or so, but the land-based FlaK 16s did not have these during the Spanish Civil War because it was assumed they'd not be firing at many boats on land.

Also, it's good to take everything not nailed down, it's fun to do and given the amount of gear the Germans and Soviets took there's Historical basis for it.

Regarding the finnish use of swastika insignia (specifically with short "hooks") for their tanks, that only started during the continuation war and stopped in 1945 after the lapland war by the reguest of the allies. There was no official tank insignia yet during the Winter war, but the white-blue-white stripe around the turret was sometimes used to distinguish friendlies.
Also afaik the "Panssari Ps. 161" wasn't the official name for the Vickers by the Finnish, it was simply their register number: Ps. meaning Armor, 161 being the type's number followed by a dash and the tank's number. This system is still in use, for example the Finnish Leopard 2A6's armour register numbers are Ps. 274-***. The Vickers was just called the Vickers 6-ton or the T-26E (E for Englantilainen/English) if upgraded with a captured 45mm gun after the Winter war, which the tank shown in the video would seem to be.

I would like to point out that it was a common practice among the Germans to refit their prior variant tanks to the "current" variant's specifications, so it might be that they based the model for the Panzer IV ausf. D on a D chassis that had been refit to the F specifications. So occasionally you'll have old variant chassis with a new variant turret.

21:30 Tecnically yes, but actually no.
Main Command of Finnish Air Force did change it 1945, in during Lapland war to help identification of own and soviet pilots.
and then later Air Force Staff stop using swastika symbol as insignia in 2002.
Finnish Air Force and Part of Defence force keeps using it.
Utti Jaeger Regiment (helicopter operations, special forces) has it in their flag and cross of merit
Meanwhile regional flags of Finnish Air Force with especially Academy still using swastika.
Mainly honoring count rosen who gifted Finland its 1st plane.
as Kai Meclin Finnish Air Force museum curator put it:
''If we now deny the use, or stop using the swastika, we could give a signal abroad that actually it was a Nazi symbol in Finland - which it never was.
We are still proud of it and using it.
It's also symbol of Finnish stubbornness that we don't give up our Right or our own history, if there is not any reason to be ashamed of it.''

Those tanks which had Vickers 5.ton base and T-26 turret, was later designated as T-26 E (meaning English).
and Soviets T-26 based on Vickers 5.ton tank
BT-42 design worked reasonably well against soft targets but was completely unsuitable for anti-tank warfare.
The problems arose with the copied HEAT shells fuses, which apparently did not arm themselves correctly after firing, due to the different muzzle velocity and round spin rate of the 4.5-inch howitzer compared to the original German guns.
Test firing suggested that it should have been able to penetrate 110 - 115 mm steel plate in 70 degree angle, but due to the poor quality armour plates used in tests, this gave a false picture.
which in Battle of Viipuri, 20th of June 1944
Tammisuo: At afternoon Soviet SU-122 assault gun and four T-34 tanks drove into firing sector BT-42 R-702, which fired 15 HEAT-shells at them from distance of just 70 meters - but none of the shells made any made any real impact.
In city: BT-42 511-7 fought a very desperate and one-sided battle against KV-series (or IS-series) heavy tank - hitting it 18 times with HEAT-shells without any real impact.

Hello, just found your channel. I couldn't help but notice the strange emblem on the wall. What is this exactly? Looks like a modified version of the famous Polish artillery company that raised Wojtek the bear

Hey i really like this. You mentioned that most tanks interiors were painted white i was wondering why that might be, i had trouble finding an answer elswhere. Thank you

    • @eta320
      @eta320  Před 25 dny +2

It was done so that what minimal lights that were in the tank would reflect better off the white walls and it’s easier to see. Also, if anything springs a leak inside the tank the black oils/grease can also show up easily on a white background

Well, i actually learned about the BT-42 when i didn't even knew Girls und Panzer, i learned about it when i started to like history alot and when i was starting to study about the winter war, i saw photos of it and got curious, that's how i learned that the BT-42 existed, at first i thought it was an tank destroyer and just later i got the knowledge it was an assault gun that was not soviet. so not everybody learned about the BT-42 from GuP! (Also sorry if there is an english errors, my keyboard is old and very bad and i'm also not that good in english, since i'm brazilian)
