  • Bank fishing for bass in tough conditions can be extremely frustrating. It stinks going to a lake or pond and getting skunked. However, if you keep this lure with you in tough conditions, you can almost always catch fish!

There are certain times of the year when bank fishing for bass can be difficult. One of those times of the year can be during late summer and early fall. Another difficult time can be during the dead of winter.
In both situations, if you can't get bit, pick up a drop shot worm and get to work.
The drop shot is really going to be your best friend to put some fish on the shoreline.
BassFishingHQ is dedicated to teaching people how to catch more and bigger bass. I will go over different bass fishing tips & techniques that will put more fish in the boat or on the shore. Whether you are just starting out or a seasoned tournament angler, my goal is to help you catch more bass.

As a bank fisherman. You have to lose a lure. Forget it and move on. I had a KVD 1.5 Sexy Shad squarebill crank. Last year I caught over 150 bass on that single crank. Retrieved it many times after breaking my line. Finally lost it for good. It was beat all to Hell. But the action was different for some reason. I have 5 other ones just like it. But I will miss that lure forever. Shawn.

I have a bitsy minnow also in the sexy shad. Same story, it caught everything. Then I retrieved it from a nasty snag that broke the rear treble. I replaced it, and the split shot. Still works, but hasn't been quite the same. The wobble is more temperamental when retrieved at higher speeds.
Regardless, those KVD squarebills are the best inexpensive crank bait out there. Can't tell you how many of the 1.5 oz sexy shads I've lost though. It's almost become a point of parody.

That's why I use a shorter 6'8" spinning rod in ponds and fish mostly with weightless worms and flukes or finesse worms on ⅛oz Spider Slider heads. I very seldom lose lures these days. 45 years of wading has taught me, when you cast into a tree or bush, DON'T OVERREACT! In fact, don't react at all. Where we get in trouble is trying to pull back on a bad cast. Well, what does that do? It immediately wraps your lure around a limb. Instead, do nothing. Once it settles where it's going, SLOWLY pull your lure back to the FIRST limb it encounters. Once your lure reaches that 1st limb, GENTLY wiggle it while applying a SLIGHT PULL. Inevitably, it will come off that limb. Repeat this process until your lure is free of every last twig. *GENTLY WIGGLE AND PULL; NEVER SNATCH!* I can throw a RAT-L-TRAP into a tree, ON PURPOSE, and get it back every single time by doing this. Of course, it's much easier with a single hook lure, but it still works with treble hook lures. I've been doing this for about 35 of those 45 years, so I GUARANTEE it works. It just takes PATIENCE and EXPERIENCE.

My advice for bank fishing: boots for ankle support/traction, long pants for mosquitoes/poison ivy, insect repellent, sling bag for all your tackle, one combo (finesse baitcaster is versatile), snap for quick lure changes, wide brim hat for sun protection, polarized sunglasses, fish gripper and needle nose pliers for safe hook removal (a hook in your thumb can ruin your day, believe me). Bonus tip: If the mosquitos, ants, chiggers, or ticks are especially bad, I have found that bicycle pant clips around the cuffs of long pants and insect repellent on my socks and shoes greatly reduce or eliminate annoying bites on my legs.

    Love the Bill Dance intro!!
As a bank angler who fished with one spinning rod and reel for my first twenty years of bass fishing, one of my favorite and most productive things to throw was a split shot rig with a 4” worm. I also have killed them in the spring with a beetle spin. Both of those baits were also highly effective when wading in the river and fishing for smallmouth in the spring and summer, but mostly summer because the water was not so frigid and the river wasn’t so high and fast. This was the Shenandoah in Harpers Ferry, WV and the upper Potomac in Maryland. It’s been 40 years since I’ve fished there and the access has been changed in a lot of places as the area got built up so much in the past thirty years.

The more bank or wade fishing you do, the more you'll streamline your tackle selection. After about 30 or 35 years of walking and wading, I began to only carry one spinning rod and a pack or two of either: 1)Zoom Finesse worms, 2)Super Flukes, or 3) Senkos. In one of those bags, I carry 3 or 4 worm hooks and/or Spider Slider heads. In the other bag, I like to have either a: 1)#9 Smelt colored Rapala floating minnow, 2)a ⅛oz Stanley Baby Wedge Spinnerbait, or 3)a ⅛oz Grey Minnow or Black Roostertail. I can put these in my pockets or my hat, if I wade over waist deep. Oh, and ALWAYS wear pants!

So fun watching you pound the bank, been out there like that so many times. When walking through the brush, I often point my poles behind me and seem to hang or spear trees less often. I also carry tackle in a sling bag which can hold a couple 3600 boxes, but I’ve since started packing smaller 3449 weight/hook/lure boxes and have room for “refreshments”. The bag also has a rod holder, which is a big bonus.

I just started fishing the drop shot and it is a very fun rig to fish near the bank. I see some movement or ripples near some cover and I drop it in an it makes for an epic reaction strike. I normally cast it no further than within about twenty feet from the bank and have been pretty successful. The Roboworm Morning Dawn sculpin is a great bait to rig up.

Another tip: always plan your fish landing tactic if you get into a big one...where are you going to go, and how are you going to get there? You don't want to be looking for footing while battling a pig. Just this weekend I hooked into a steelhead while targeting smallies from the bank, and I'm glad I had scouted a landing site. Footing was awkward and water was swift...plan your strategy ahead of time and stay safe!

I fish with lower test line a lot and highly recommend you add a foldable net. I use small tackle boxes in a backpack and separate them In types swimbait/drop and Texas/ cranks/crappie and bluegill. Get one that has a water bottle holder on the side and a anolog scale for when you catch a giant. Tight lines bud!

If shore fishing & you want your lure 18" (for example) above the bottom, and you're reeling in at 30 degrees (for example) from horizontal, then you're lure is only going to be 9" above the bottom. You'll need 36" between your drop shot and bait. Different if in a boat and a much steeper angle, but still applicable. SINE (angle of retrieve) * (length between drop shot & lure) = vertical distance above bottom.

I've caught huge largemouth, spots, smallmouth, every sunfish you can think of, tons of crappie, a channel catfish and even a turtle. Lol. I still just have such a hard time picking up the spinning gear and throwing a drop shot. I'll beat the water to a foam power fishing before I step her down to the finesse stuff.

I fish 99% bank. Best advice is rubber boots. if you can get just a couple of feet off the shore, opens up a TON more area, and easier casting, lots less snags.

All the spots one can't get to by foot and all the poison ivy suck as a bank angler. Definitely worth a little 2 man or yak. Good video for sure!

I’ve never fished a drop shot before but I’m going to take the next 3 days to try it and see if I have any success. I’ll be fishing a 2000 acre lake loaded with smallmouths and a 5 acre pond with a lot of 1 to 4 lb largemouths. I’m going to master this bad boy or die trying.

Love your channel, been following ya for a bit now. Have you thought about getting yourself a telescopic rod ? There are some really good ones on the market now.

First rule of bank fishing: wear long pants, no matter what! Mosquitos are biting 365 days a year lol; poison ivy never dies when it's by a nice bank fishing spot.

Watch those snakes my friend, I had a Springer Spaniel years ago that I took fishing with me when walking small lakes. He always walked ahead of me. One day while walking he stopped and was staring something down, I called him to come to me but he wouldn't move, so I walked up to him and about messed my pants..a nice size water Moccasin was curled up right where I was fixing to walk. I loved that dog, only bad thing was, when I cast he would just in the water to retrieve it. Don't like them snakes..nice video, I watched it a while back and came across this one a few minutes ago

I'm sensitive to poison ivy too. Poison ivy has 3 leaves. So, I taught myself to walk thru the brush trails repeating audibly, "Three leaves, three leaves, three leaves." Haven't been swiped by poison ivy for many years now!
