  • Are you a pond fisherman? Do you walk the bank, fish from a kayak, or raft? Maybe you fish from a Jon boat. If you fish small waters there are a few key baits that you need to know how to use. You can carry whole tackle boxes but at the end of the day, one of these 5 baits is how you'll catch most of your fish!
If you've spent any time fishing ponds you know they're just as diverse as larger lakes. Some are shallow, others are deep. Some have clear water while others are muddy. Despite all these differences, there are key baits that work in nearly every pond, every time. These are the baits we trust when we're showing up to a new pond and need to see what kind of fish live there.
Below you'll find links to the exact baits (in the order they were discussed). We've included our favorite colors and sizes for each, along with some great budget-friendly rods and reels you can use to fish these baits effectively.

Matt, thank for not forgetting those of us who don’t have access to a boat and are landlocked most of the time. There’s some great fishing to be had from the banks and there are definitely techniques (just as in the boat) that can be used to increase your chances of landing a GIANT! On the boat, you go to them. From the bank, you have to find where they’ve come to you.
Between the right bait selection and assessing the terrain, it’s still my favorite way to fish.
There’s a reason why you see a lot of expensive bass boats cruising and casting the banks!😉

Matt thanks again for covering pond fishing. I completely agree with all your picks and the recommendation of bluegill and green pumpkin colors. The only two lures I would add for the slightly deeper canyon style ponds that drop to 20’ or more include square bill or rebel style crankbaits in bluegill color and lipless crankbaits in baby bass or bluegill color. My favorite and most successful lipless crankbait this year has been the yo-zori rattling vibe in baby bass color. The vast majority of my pond bass have been caught on 6 or 7” green pumpkin senkos, the rebel bluegill crankbait and the yo-zori rattling vibe in baby bass color this year. I have caught several on poppers, frogs, Yamamoto single tail grubs, (green pumpkin) and whopper ploppers (90 and 130), but 70% are all on the other three lures (senko, rebel crankbait and rattling vibe). Again, thanks again and keep up the great work sharing! PS try iBobber’s robotic lures especially sea nymph color. I caught a few bass this year but killed the northern pike and walleye up north in Canada, including one day where I caught 70 fish in a few hours only using this lure! Let me know what you think.

7” curly tail worm and creature on the Texas rig has been the most successful bait for me bank fishing East TN. Actually the only baits I’ve caught on so far. Waiting for my jig and chatter baits to get blown up, still throwing them every time I go out. But once it gets dull going back to those green pumpkin Texas rigs get bit every time.

I'm glad you made this video because when I first started fishing I would watch your videos to inform myself but I always found that what you were talking about never seemed to work or match up with my current conditions. Most of that is because 1. I live in Washington and the conditions are delayed to your current conditions, so when you talk about froggin I have to wait a month or two before i can actually start thinking about the frog. 2. I am on the bank and your videos are mostly from the boat so I have to not even consider some ways to catch fish such as the deep diving crankbaits. I remember I went out and bought a deep diving crank because you said they work and i went out in mid november to a pond that had a bunch of dead grass thinking "why aren't I catching fish"😂 I have learned A lot now that just seems so silly to me now. So I am glad that you made this video for someone that wants to start or is learning about fishing from the bank👍

Tip for people interested in a jackhammer, TW sells Decoy egg snaps. Get size 2s and use an original or custom chatterbait, take off the fastach thing they come with and work one of those snaps on in its place. It is a little bit of work, but this makes the blade perform exactly as it does on a jackhammer out of the box and you can build three for the price of one.

Wish I could find some ponds to fish in! I grew up fishing my grandfather's pond and a nearby small lake.

Nicely done! Most of my time is either bank fishing or kayaking small lakes and ponds, so this is gold. Agree 100% with all of your choices. If you had to add a 6th, I wonder what you and/or your viewers would say? Mine would definitely be a small (ish) paddle tail swimbait like the Beast Coast Miyagi, Gambler EZ, or of course a Keitech. For baits approaching 5”, you wont get a lot of bites but you definitely give yourself a shot at catching the largest bass in the pond. 6a for me would be a 3/8 ounce swimjig with a R2S D walker 100 trailer. It’s an AWD bait for me, can throw it anywhere, virtually weedless and got my PB on it. So I never leave it out of my bag. 🙏 🐸

Dropshot with a Robo worm in margarita mutilator gets the job done year round for me here in So. Cal. Probably the least exciting way to catch them but when the bites are few and far in between, u throw it 😂

I appreciate this video very much! I do a lot of bank fishing at ponds and canals in Southern Florida and all these baits are in my arsenal, minus the chatterbait! If there’s running water in a canal the Super Flukes will hammer them all day long, especially the Watermelon Red!

These guys come down here every now and again, but they also do a nice job of mentioning how things may be different in Florida no matter what they're talking about. Is a swimming worm any good where you are? That's a Florida classic that's been really good for me this year. Good luck out there!

@@oldeschoolbob1022 yea they do a great job of speaking to all parts of the country! Yea a swimming worm in black and blue does well down here, especially for Lake Okeechobee from what I’m told. I’ve caught a good amount on a YUM Swim’n Dinger, Zoom Ultravibe Speed Worm and Strike King Rage Tail Cut-R in either a black and blue or a purple/June bug colors. Swimming it or Texas rig it. I’m told they work great this time of year!

I have actually become a good bass hunter per say from you guys!! Try a buzz toad weightless and slowly twitch and swim it along with using it as a top water lure... I found it works better than anything else in shallow water... Looks like a dieing frog or whatever you want it to do!!! Give it try with underwater footage

Hey guys: There’s a few things I’ve been wounding for a while now looking at different tackle stores on line: when a product is listed as a close out does that always mean when it’s gone it’s gone? 2nd: Does a sale mean a product isn’t going away just on discount at a given time? Finally one thing that bugs me when I go to a store that sells tackle is they usually only offer a few items from a given company and not everything that offers. I guess it’s because they have limited space. Thanks for the info and good fishing…🎣😎🐝

I feel that if you understand the layout of your pond it can help you catch more bass. if your pond gets drained in the winter get out there and go look at the pond and understand the layout.

Thank you, Matt. I would wager (and a quick glance through previous comments confirms) that a huge percentage of your audience are primarily bank anglers. Videos like this that speak to our needs are greatly appreciated. Is a Bank Anglers Buyer's Guide a possibility down the road? Tackle, backpacks, fanny packs, considerations when choosing a rod and reel combination, etc. I see some mention of some of these topics in the archive, but not a Guide aimed specifically at bank anglers. Food for thought. Thanks as always for another great video!

I fish a little pond that’s got some good sized fish in it. Unfortunately it also has only about 30% of open water when warm weather comes around. The grass is ridiculously thick. I’m sure I’m personally responsible for making sure the grass doesn’t cover 100% because I pull out clump after clump lol.
