If you combine his singing with all the hits he produced for other artists, Babyface is the r&b GOAT. The 80s is a little before my time, I knew this song but didn't know who it was either until about 5 years ago 😄so you're not alone. I see you already know about "Shake You Down" by Gregory Abbott, so I would just add, "I'd Still Say Yes" by Klymaxx, to finish probably the 3 best r&b songs of the 80s.
