The Dells' two incredible lead singers were Marvin Junior (baritone) and Johnny Carter (first tenor, on the right). They traded lead on many of their songs. Not long after both of them died -- Carter in 2009 and Junior in 2013, the group stopped performing.

"Oh What A Night" & "Stay In My Corner" are a couple of the mighty Dells songs you will want to check out. We last saw them perform in a packed venue in Los Angeles. My husband & family are from Harvey IL (I worked there) where the Dells grew up and lived so they are close to everyone's musical hearts . They started singing in high school in 1952. One of them lived in the back house where a cousin used to live in Harvey. Back in the 1950's it was a great to go to a house party where the young Dells would sing & my late hubby (who would be 82) got to tag along with his older sister or their mother wouldn't let her go. The Dells sang their soulful heart out for 60 years and their catalog of songs are here to stay & enjoy.

Marvin Junior, the second lead singer on this song, is the main influence on Teddy Pendergrass. Skip Mahoney of Skip Mahoney and The Casuals ("Wherever You Go" czcams.com/video/-GFnawFYOUc/video.html) had a similar voice to the other lead, Johnnie Carter. This is from their appearance on the pre-PBS TV show "Soul!" initially broadcast March 15, 1972. I suggest, when you get the chance, you watch the entire broadcast czcams.com/video/eREBH5dq6ko/video.html. You will thoroughly enjoy it - especially "Oh What A Night." They were also famous for the theme song for "The Five Heartbeats" - "A Heart Is A House For Love" czcams.com/video/JI6X0Mlg-aU/video.html but I especially enjoyed their "Let The Feeling Talk To You" czcams.com/video/CDKMOWj0EwA/video.html and "All About The Paper": czcams.com/video/kp5YKKJS6uo/video.html.

You’ve got to hear Marvin Junior, hold that note at the end!!! That’s all I got to say!!! The one with the unique voice, that’s Johnny Carter, whom, I believe died in 2009! And the other, Marvin Junior, I believe, died in 2013 or 2014, cause he died about 4 or 5 years after Johnny! Love you guys for listening to The Dells!!! There’s only 1 member alive right now, & that’s Verne Allison. In his 80s, but he still looks good! Anyways, Love ya!!!

Those guys were BEASTS...saw a taped show back in early 2000s of a live show by Public Broadcast Station ( PBS ) it was quite moving even in their older ages. It was some DooWop special.

That was one of my all time favorite songs. Most groups back in the 50s-70s consisted of at least 5 to 6 members and at least one high pitch falsetto and a deep bass singer. You better quit try to sing falsetto before you strain your voice.

Thanks for the appreciation of us "old heads'" music. They tell a story; a story of love and you can BET... your grandma and grandpa utilized the musical melodies to facilitate your mom & dads' existence. 👍

The "Mighty" Dells were awesome. You don't get singers with voices this good nowadays. "Stay in My Corner," "Oh What a Night," "Long and Lonely Nights," "Give Your Baby a Standing Ovation," and the "Love We Had Stays on My Mind" are my favorites

If you saw the movie, The Five Heartbeats...based on their lives...they sang all of the songs.
