    I had to be about 4 years old when my dad bought this Yamaha RX-V870 receiver (if it was bought in 1992), as time went on he bought other receivers and put this one in another room.
    Then when I grew up and got my own house, I was looking around his house and asked if I could have this Yamaha RX-V870 Receiver and he said yes, but when I went to power it on it was dead in the water, No power to the unit what-so-ever.
    I took it home anyway, but could not get it to work, so it went on the Bulk-Pick-Up pile in the garage, ready to be thrown away later.
    When the time came to put the Bulk-Pick-Up trash outside, I couldn't part with this great looking receiver and so for the last time . . . I plugged it into an outlet in the garage and it powered ON - It was an audiophile miracle - and you could imagine my excitement ;)
    That was like 5 years ago and it's still rocking on today - I have it hooked up to my flat screen tv with surround sound speakers and everything works great, even the remote.
    I remember looking at the remote as a child and thinking how complicated it looked with all the buttons and my dad saying: "Don't touch the remote!" :)

      I ended up with my vintage receiver the same way. My dad bought it and then didn't use it and it ended up in the crawl space for me to find years later. Mine a little more prestigious however, it is a Macintosh 1600. No I have never shown it on the channel. Some day I will overhaul it.

    This was a really good 5.1 Yamaha receiver. It was the 3rd best Yamaha Receiver in 1993.
    The model above it was the Yamaha
    RX-V1070.
    The top of the line Yamaha receiver in 1993 was the Yamaha RX-V2090. It was really built.
    This is when pro logic was popular for 5 channel receivers

      Yes I recently purchased a 1070 off of eBay in what turns out to be mint condition. Before and since I've studied the the reviews and comments of people who have actually owned and used the product. I know the one I bought was supposedly one of the last receivers versus AV receiver designation made by Yamaha while they were still manufacturing in Japan at that time. The reason I say receiver versus AV receiver is because of the great emphasis on the front two channels and the labeling on the front of the model. When I went to check mine indeed it said Yamaha natural sound receiver not not Yamaha natural sounds AV receiver. These mothers boasted 0.015% total harmonic distortion and mine features two decibels of dynamic headroom which is a lot for a receiver. It is 110 watts per channel pushing 8 ohms and 135 watts per channel pushing 6 ohms with dynamic power ratings of of 160 and 190 respectively. I know the top of the line Yamaha Adventege AV models do no better than 0.6% total harmonic distortion. I've read that the manufacturers had become so focused on features and marketability that the engineers or left with insufficient resources to put into the actual performance of the amplifier.

    Thanks for the vid. I just googled this because my Yamaha rx v870 started buzzing. my left channel was always slightly weaker at low volume, but when the unit all the sudden started buzzing today, left channel cut out completely. i tapped the bass extension and tone bypass buttons a couple of times and it came back. now the buzzing also seems to have stopped so i guess its intermittent for now. time to have mine looked at. i use this regularly over my Marantz 7.2 which sits on a shelf. the Yamaha sounds great with my Klipsch.

    Nice ! Just got inspirated to take a look at my good old trusty Denon AVR-950RD. Before it could take selveral power on attempts (exercising the relays) to get a prober sound. Cleaned the relay and hopefully this can gain many more years ;) Also a big thanks for the many repair videos, I really learned a lot watching these.

    I found this to be an excellent CZcams instructional video. I have an RX-A820 which although old isn't old enough to have a removable bottom panel I had pretty much zeroed in on a bad speaker relay switch. This video showed me how it could be repaired. I used to trouble shoot circuit boards but don't have the stamina or the eyesight for it anymore. I would have needed schematics to take this on, but this guy seems to know where everything is already.
    Although I won't be attempting to repair my Yami, found the video very informative and really it only confirms my own conclusion about what just started AILING my 7 year old A820 which is absolutely Maxed out--every input and has never given me any problems till now. I'm going to buy a replacement unit on Ebay and hope these relay problems aren't just inevitable for all these Yamaha.

    1993 model. I bought one for $20 - the owner said one channel was dead. Turns out it was corrosion/crust across the output transistors' solder pads on the board, shorting them out. Cleaned them and it worked perfect. Sold it for $160.

    An excellent video. I really like the detail you showed on how to service/clean the relay contacts. I've got an old mid 70's Sherwood amp that would lose a channel occasionally. I don't think it has a relay like the Yamaha does, but maybe I can find a cold solder connection. Sherwood's service department kept it long enough, but never completely solved the problem.

    I'm more awake today so hopefully I can offer my appreciation to this program for helping me not disregard my Yamaha RX v 1070 which is the big brother of the one on this video. I did something really stupid followed by making me uneducated observation about the appearance of my transformers with regards to thinking of damaged and causing the Lost to the audio quality in power associated with this receiver. I also thought that I additional problems in that my adcom GFA 535 power amp and finally reached a level of usage based on its age to where it needed to be recapped. Then I noticed a comment made during the program about the likelihood of two separate things occurring at the same time such as this.
    535 will at some point need new capacitators as it came out in 1987.however it was very likely used by my brother before

    I can't DIY and I recently bought a beautiful 110 watt version of that unit RX v1070. It have been bench tested before I bought it and was playing fall asleep The more recently it started losing volume and sound quality and I figured maybe it needed to be recapped so I talked to a service person and I just happened to notice when I was boxing it up that the transformer and what I believe he called the standby transformer have this copper colored solidified liquid coming out of them which I know has got to be bad news. My unit actually looks like it may have been recapped, perhaps before it was bench tested. I feel absolutely sick as I would imagine it cost a lot to repair a transformer in the possible damage could have occurred downline as well. But excellent video in terms of helping me understand to work up of one of these units.

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  Před 3 lety +2

      Well transformers don't have liquid in them for starters. Capacitors do. Sometimes they spray transformers with laquor to deaden vibrations.

    • @danedwards4406
      @danedwards4406 Před 3 lety

      @@12voltvids so it sounds like you're saying that there may not be a problem with the transformer. I know I have not experienced any difficulty with it powering on... I guess that idea in my head because it does sound like the audio quality has diminished and I've noticed that I have to turn the volumes knob up from 9 o clock to roughly 10 o clock to get the same volume using the same source and maintaining all other variables. Over all the unit arrived in immaculate cosmetic condition and sounded as good as one could hope for a receiver to sound following my purchase back in April.
      I think I got the idea of leaking some kind of substance from my discussion on the phone with the technician I've been talking to with regards to service and restoration with regards to replacing capacitators. I'd shared with him that my 1987 adcom power amp which I played in the same configuration with the RX v1070 had been experiencing a gradual decline in fidelity and power for over a month and that I've received it as a gift from my brotherhood only used it for about 2 years after purchasing it new in 1987. The topic of capacitator seems to be a big determinant with regards to fidelity and power. From what I've read it would appeary understanding is that age and heat cause them to degrade. My brother also revealed that he had stored the adcom during all those years of non-use in a outbuilding which while dry was subject to getting very hot in the warmer weather. Neither of us have any idea whether or not that can age or degree to pass theaters in a manner similar to the temperatures they experience over thousands of hours of use. The fact that both amplifiers started demonstrating similar problems at around the same time maybe telling in itself. I hope it is not something that I have done in my setup that has damaged them. My living situation limits me to well below the optimum 80 decimal range a lot of people like to listen to their music yet so I haven't overdriven them.
      My understanding of how capacitators alter and store power and my reading of descriptions of what type symptoms accompany their need to be replaced are the only clues I have as to what needs to be done. But I greatly appreciate your communication as I really love both these components and particularly with the Yamaha was on the verge of just abandoning it and purchasing something else. And I still face the dilemma of the cost of even routine refurbishment of both units and a wait time of a couple months without music. I wish I had had more time to possibly learn how to do some of this myself.
      I feel much more encouraged knowing that most likely the problem is not with the transformer although I guess it will take a diagnosis. So I really appreciate your feedback as it was my hope to keep both of these units in good working condition and use them indefinitely. When both amplifiers were at their best I had managed to assemble a Hi-Fi system with as much fidelity and power anybody could ever want at least with my budget. So once again thanks and I will be following you on CZcams.

      I'm sorry that response was all messed up I'm tired and was trying to proof it. Anyway I do greatly appreciate the information because I hope to keep my system together and at least it sounds like this might be more of a possibility. I did download a GFA 535 service manual but have nowhere near the understanding or the skills or the equipment to embark on such a project on either of these. Perhaps after watching a lot more episodes of your CZcams presentation and more study I'll be more capable of doing this. Thanks once again

      As you can tell I'm real to you to computers too do not complete that last comment regarding me programming 870 and my my 1070 in my power amplifier. It was brought to my attention that it was very unlikely that that was liquid coming out of my transformers but rather some type of adhesive technicians use when they're working inside of these units. I also went back and crossed checks the appearance of my units 2 large capacitators, I believe they're called the power capacitators. I noticed that they had been replaced. This made sense since just prior to my purchasing this model it had been bench tested by a technician with 30 years of experience. To make a long story short and I feel really foolish... I use both the power amplifier and the Yamaha RX-V1070 simultaneously to provide a surround sound type configuration hi-fi listening experience. My front speakers have four terminals for bi amplification or bi wiring. And I had experimented around with using either the 1070 or the power amp in a bi wire configuration. The whole problem turned out to be easily solvable and had nothing to do with either amplifiers performance. Encouraged by the information acquired by this program I had unboxed my Yamaha and my adcom just to double-check to see if the problem might be with the speakers. I was so focused on the concept of age and the need for renewal or new capacitators on vintage stuff that I neglected to look for something more simple. As you may have already guessed I had forgotten or missed my replacement of one of the shortings on one of my front ( left )speakers pair of terminals which is necessary when you are only using a basic single terminal input. The shorting was over one but then off to the side and just barely touching the bottom rightportion of the tournament was supposed to be connected over. Since these are mud best speakers anytime I get a lesson satisfactory audio performance from something having to do with the system whether it be the Yamaha or the adcom I would hook the suspected unit up to them. But apparently this was a systemic problem too as the rear speakers a demonstrate substantial loss of fidelity and power. I'm not sure how the front amplifier connected to a configuration involving a split source was able to backtrack up through my digital to analog converter and into the RCA y connectors and go back into the other amplifier impacting it sound performance. But that indeed was the case and as it turned out after correcting that shorting problem both amplifiers / preamp or receiver along with all four speakers are back to their original fidelity and power. I had boxed both the 1070 and the 535 up in the original boxes and had planned on taking them on about a hour drive to a technician I had talked to to have them diagnosed. Something he was going to charge $80 each for and then apply it to whatever repairs he would have recommended. And he was 2 to 3 months behind so I would have been without music for all that time and out hundreds of dollars.
      I take great pride in my wiring and my connections and I'm baffled as to how I could have made such a stupid mistake except that it is dark in that corner of the room behind the speaker and I usually have to use a flashlight to see clearly.
      Lessons learned. Never assume or make rush judgments based on insufficient information. And since that incident I have downloaded a service manual for the GFA 535. It is my hope that by the time it actually does need new capacitators or any other type of work I can learn enough and watch enough of these programs, and acquired the necessary tools to do this myself perhaps with a little coaching.
      I had a RXV 2500 which must have shorted out and would no longer power on after generating white smoke consistent with some type of combustion. Being really new to all this that point I just took the loss and wrote that one off. I disassembled it out of curiosity and it indeed had had some kind of issue with the power transformer is the copper band around the outside it melted in the back. Had to know more into could have probably been repaired. I saved very circuit boards including the ones on which the two main or largest capacitators on that model. I also have an amplifier board off of a b i c subwoofer therefore would have two things to practice my soldering skills on. I'm not sure how I would test for current but since the subwoofer amplifier board is intact I imagine there's a way to supply it with enough power to check the transistors and the capacitators. The reason I have it is because it was on my original subwoofer and sent out for repairs and came back with the original symptoms. It's inside it just purchased the subwoofer and BIC has excellent product support and warranty coverage at that point they mailed me a brand new amplifier for the subwoofer.
      Although I know very little about an electronics with regards to the technical inner workings I save this type of stuff because it fascinates me and I always think I might have a use for it in the future. Well now I have a use for the stuff I saved. When I got into vintage I had looked at a couple articles where people purchased vintage equipment in order to get high quality sound on a budget. And then they described how they were disappointed with the sounds but were then motivated to go out and do their first do-it-yourself recap job or whatever which let them to have the confidence to go on and do numerous repairs on their own equipment. But since that time I have learned that it is simply not that simple if you don't have a technical background.
      But I also have the motivation of wanting to have access to the best sounding equipment possible within my financial

    Thank you for sharing this video. I bought one of these units new in 1993. It moved to the basement storage after a few months of usage. It sat there for most of its life till I recently decided to hear it again. What a sound, I love it when it is working well. But I have an issue with the left channel. It starts scratchy when the amp is cold. In one occasion, there was no sound from the left channel for a few minutes. So I opened the cover the cleaned everything that I could reach, however; the problem persists. When the amp is cold, the left channel has a scratchy sound and it gets better as it warms up by plaing 2 or 3 songs. I am looking for any advice that I could use to solve the problem, thank you.

I checked the voltage myself and it's 14.5 volts ac? Is this normal for this? I had to add a rectifier and a resistor with a 12v bulb and now it's working fine. I just thought it would be dc volts. Hello, need help!! it’s been more than 3 years last time I turned ON my RX-V, surprised that front right main channel isn’t working at all, no signal from the receiver (LFE) arriving to the sub, another issue that I noticed, when I touch the main couplers, the lower one “main-in, pre-out” at backside I hear a loud hum from the channel that isn’t even working which is front right, our local authorized dealer doesn’t help, they said due to its age, they doesn’t have its service manual, I’m sure they will get that online, so they didn’t do anything!!!
    Appreciate any recommendations!!
    RX-V 2095 (1999-2000) year.
    Thank you in advance!!
    Wondering if the problem is from that relay as what you mentioned is a common issue for that receiver in that era

    A nail file is WAY over-doing it on relay contacts. Once that precious contact material is gone - it's gone. There's lots of more gentle ways, but replacement relays are 5.00 or less on eBay. Nothing beats new.

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  Před 8 lety +1

      +Mark Zacharias OK so a relay on ebay is 5.00 , then to ship ship to canada they want 45.00 then the broader firm because the shipper sent it fed ex instead of post wants another 40.00. Been down that road. Ordered a 23.00 item that ended
      Costing over120.Also you are forgetting the fact that many of the parts that you buy off ebay are parts that salvagers have pulled out of scrap units. Just look at the fun I went through ordering a board from shopjimmy for my free plasma. Sure they made good and shipped me a replacement, but that took another 2 weeks to get, and I had it shipped to a receiving depot in the US to avoid shipping to Canada costs, which added the inconvenience of 2 trips across the boarder, and extra fees to receive it. That 15.00 board ended up costing me 55.00 plus my time.So in light of that, the file on the contacts fixed it, and the owner of the unit is happy.

    • @mdzacharias
      @mdzacharias Před 8 lety +1

      I used to use a "relay burnishing tool". There are better ways. Relays I often buy NEW from China for less than 5.00 each (Omron 24V DPDT) with free freight in qty or 1.50 freight for two. You have to cut off two pins and they drop right in. Been doing this 40 years. You do nice work though.

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  Před 8 lety +2

      +Mark Zacharias I too have been servicing electronics for many years. I first got my CET ticket back in 1983 when I was working for the Sony corporation. I retired from that line of work in 2003 as I could see the writing on the wall. These days it is just a hobby to help people get things going. Most of the stuff I repair here is mine, and is donated after it is done, so I am not making money from the repair, other than the advertising revenue from youtube. So I am not going to spend even 5.00 on a unit that I am giving away. If it breaks down 6 months later, so be it. I use recycled parts as often as I can. Only if it is a unit I intend to keep, like the 3 PlasmaTVs I did. Those are keepers, so I spent some money fixing those. The Bose system too, that was a paid job, so new parts went in it. The rest of the stuff people give to me to take to the recyclers. I fix what is repairable, and then either sell it off cheap, or in many cases give the unit away.

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  Před 7 lety +2

      Could be a few things. Could be a dirty volume control if it is a linear control.. Another thing is a problem in the biasing circuit and the output transistors are going into cutoff. This is most noticeable at lower listening levels. In a class B amplifier (push pull)one transistor (or tube) conducts for the positive swing of the waveform, and another for the negative half. At that point where they switch crossover distortion (IMD) is generated. To minimize this class B amplifiers are biased into what is known as class AB. A small bias current is introduced into the outputs to keep the transistors from going into complete cutoff at zero status. This greatly reduces crossover distortion.If one of the resistors that provides this bias goes open then the transistors go into cutoff, and distortion is introduces, and this is most noticeable at very low levels.

      They can be cleaned up and will last a long time. Replacing them is an expansive option. Ordering from companies like digikey or mouser will cost 50 or so dollars by the time it gets here. Customers have limits on what they will pay. I made 40 on this. If I told the customer it would be 90 to repair it he is saying forget it I don't want to spend the money. The majority of the units I fix for people are selling them on ebay so they don't want to spend much. Just get them running so they can sell.

    Never use an abrasive in relay contacts! If anything, use a burnishing tool, or stiff paper to "polish" the points. Once you damage the plating on the points, they will not last and the problem will return sooner than later. Sure, it is "fixed" for now. • @12voltvids

      Speaker relays are there to delay connecting the speakers until the amp has settled down, and there is no DC voltage on the output. It also cuts the speakers off as soon as the power is cut so the gradual discharge of the power supply caps will not cause a DC voltage to appear on the speaker terminals and potentially damage the speaker. Only a fool would bypass them.
