    I get about 310 highway miles per tank (not empty). I agree 100% with you assessment. I know many people are intimidated by the weight but I think the ST1300 think its a 600 pounder, she loves the twisties and handle incredibly at low speeds.

    I would say that the "looks" of a motorcycle are purely subjective and therefore irrelevant when discussing it's merits or faults.
    This is the last time I am going to approve a comment dealing with "wobble". If your ST1300 "wobbles" you have either purchased an incorrect tire or your tire is under-inflated. The ST requires a specific tire that is actually made for it, like the Bridgestone BT020. The ST requires a minimum tire pressure of 42psi. I have NEVER had any wobble on my bike.

    I took a ST1300 out for my honeymoon. It was a wonderful machine and I pushed it to the mechanical limit in twisties on highway 1, california, with my wife on the back. It had plenty of character and was able to build speed with no problems all over the road.

    Excellent review. I went with the FJR (2013) since I didn't have a sportbike and I really wanted cruise control for the highway. I love the FJR. It's been a year since you uploaded that video so I hope you are still enjoying the world of sport touring!

    Great video man, i'm a Honda motorcycle salesman. When people come in and talk to me about the ST1300 it can be really hard to convince them its a great bike compared to the others. All they see is the price difference and the gadgets that the Honda doesn't have..! Its a very hard bike to sell, but when people come back and see us after buying one they are very happy with their purchase :) I love your 750!! I had a 2008 model, miss it very much! Great vid, earned yourself a new sub!

    I own a 02 Honda Goldwing 1800 and love it. Yep it has reverse & electric cruise. I ride long distance for Oklahoma to California, and the trip seems to go by real fast... I would never own anything but a Honda, Goldwing that is... You made a great choice there.... Safe rides always.

    Thanks Ric. Yes, still happy with the Honda, have 15000 km on it now. I didn't really look at the BMW. Whether it's valid or not, I am concerned about reliability issues with BMW. Japanese bikes a rock solid/bullet proof.

    Rode an ST1100 for 8 years and about 25K miles. A great all-around bike. Right about the wind/weather protection. Love the 7+ gal gas tank. The side guards are priceless. Sooner or later the bike will tip over. With out the side guards you are looking at tall money for repair.

    Excellent choice!
    People's concerns with the power not being that with the Kawi or the sport feel of the FJR are misguided. This bike is as much a rocket as you could ever want or can use with todays traffic laws (and fines and impoundment!) and a solid locomotive that will hang with the fastest. And you'll cover 1200 kms in a day without even thinking about it. Sure it's heavy. Those tipover wings do come in handy. But that weight gives it that solid feel that you don't get with the others.

  • @OccasionallyEvil

    Been watching these reviews and am pretty much sure yours is the one that makes me wanna rethink what bike to own for a long time. I've never had anything close to the ST1300 or a superfast power bike, probably because of my size, but I am planninig on riding to the Northern part of Ghana and you just gave me lots of good reasons to consider saving and getting one. Till then, can I borrow yours? Hahahahahahahahaa

    I bought mine for 100mile commuting. It's a white ex-Police bike. I've replaced the screen motor, that was expensive, and put on Pilot Road 3s and it's great for long distance riding even in the rain. A bit agricultural compared to my VFR800 but very comfortable. The weight was really intimidating to start with, but I must have grown muscles since as after 3500 miles I now find it OK. Really solid feel. 50mpg keeping below 80mph. Above 80mph screen buffets - only bike that doesn't is ZZR1400

    Started riding my st1100 more. Getting used to how it handles. I'm used to my sport bike that are lowered. Still getting the feeling when turning just feels awkward. Working on it so I can take a road trip. I like the older style console. I have a digital on street bike and it has its issues. Only a few things I would change is the exhaust and rear tire to something more sporty. Other than that might add heated grips, battery tender and brighter head light.

    Sounds like you made the right choice. There are no losers in this category. Really it comes down to which one best fits your body ergonomically.
    If all goes well I'll be riding home an '06 FJR tonight. Popped up on Craigslist at a reasonable price and I couldn't resist. These bikes are deceptively fast out on the road, and the miles just disappear behind you.

  • @jpiii333

    You make some really great points about the ST, and really helped to clarify the differences in my mind. I like the ST a lot, but was moving toward the FJR. Given the differences that you note, and the fact that I really like the Gold Wing too, looking at the ST in a little different way has moved the ST back up the list for me. Yes, the price difference bothers me, but new FJR pricing has moved it closer to the FJR so the choice is tougher now! I've heard about heat issues - any experience with too-warm legs?

    • @OccasionallyEvil
      @OccasionallyEvil  Před 10 lety

    I was between the ST and the Concours 14, and coming from a first-gen Concours, decided to stick with Kawasaki. The ST is definitely more luxurious of the three, and I'm quite fond of them. @kheetar Před 12 lety

    You're a wise man. I rode the FJR to Laguna Seca this weekend and the FZ1 is looking more and more redundant. The FJR owns the highway, and with a few clicks will tear up the twisties like a sportbike should. I had big plans to upgrade the FZ1 but now all my attention has shifted to the FJR.

    Very nice bikes. I'm at sort of the same crossroads with motorcycles. I've always owned sportbikes but just bought a Goldwing a couple years ago. So some things you mention really hit home. Right now I'm kind of soul searchin whether to buy an ST1300 or FJR. I love Honda and the one thing they know how to do is build engines. Have seen Goldwings with 500,000 miles. I've owned many Honda motorcycles but never a Yamaha. I'm not too old yet so I think I'd enjoy something like your bike. I'm missing the sportier rides I guess. Will keep the Goldwing and pick up a nice used ST or FJR. And just sort of figure it out as I go. Thanks for the video. Ride safe.

      Happy Trails I was in an accident recently and wrote off my ST1300. I'm buying another ST1300 this week, it's such a great bike I don't want to be without one. It's a big bike but it has great balance and it can be flicked through corners surprisingly well for such a heavy machine. If you give it the gas and let the revs climb it has more than enough power IMO. I wouldn't take it off-road, but I have a Suzuki DR650 for that, touring around the country on sealed roads it is hard to be the ST1300.

      I guess the price depends on where you are. I definitely would not pay more than $11,000. I don't think there would be a problem with cooling the motor. BUT, this bike does not create a lot of (cooling) airflow over the rider and some have complained about engine heat on the rider's right leg. Never bothered me but I don't ride in extreme heat.

    I agree with 100% about the insurance thing. The odd thing is that insurance companies actually lose money when owners of multiple vehicles choose to remove there insurance and park some vehicles because of the cost. Like you say, obviously there is no extra risk to insurance companies if they just insure the driver and not the vehicles he owns. Insurance companies should give at least a 50% discount on second or third recreational vehicles.
    Yes my wife is a keeper :)

    No, never slow down!! I would have chosen the FJR if I didn't already have the Gixxer. But since I already have a sport bike, I wanted more of a tourer. There is not question that the FJR has a more sporting character than the ST.
    I am not sure if calling the ST a "stripped down Goldwing" is a compliment or an insult :) The Goldwing is a pretty amazing motorcycle. But I wouldn't trade my ST for it, not for a few years anyway. Thanks for your comments.

    I live in Canada, so more heat the better. I usually ride just in the mornings on hot summer days. I tend to avoid heat and rain. The 'wobble' being referred to is actually a documented anomaly with the ST's...the 'Pan Weave' (as in Pan-European) exhibits under certain loading conditions at ~120mph. That said, I own a 2004 and after the first season I am really pleased with the bike...and I do not plan to see 120mph on it.

    • @OccasionallyEvil
      @OccasionallyEvil  Před 10 lety +4

      I understand that it's documented. I still maintain that it is due to either overloading, improper tires and/or improperly inflated tires. This bike was never meant to travel at 120 mph and anyone who does so is an idiot. It's not a track bike. So the whole "wobble" thing is a mute point.

    You know, it's all about what you like. I DO find the PAN to be too heavy and slow compared to my main ride. That said, the PAN is an EXCELLENT machine. My own favorite is the k1300gt. It's the ONLY bike I have kept for more that a year! And ALL bikes these days are good.
    And while I just love my BMW, Honda build quality is simply unbeatable. Just check out a 1990 CBR1000 that has been well looked after.

    @OccasionallyEvil  Před 11 lety +1

    I haven't experienced any wobble. This is a myth I think. Make sure the bike comes with Bridgestone's not Dunlops. The only "con" is the lack of engine sound, so if you get off on the sounds of exhausts and intake, forget about it. I very much enjoy riding this bike. I have 12,000km on it now. Very solid, confidence inspiring and so far reliable. Like all Honda's everything works together well. Strengths: Torquey motor, strong brakes, well balanced and good weather protection.

    I really appreciated your review on this bike! I have done the Harley thing, but now am looking to go a different direction. I have stumbled on a used 2008 Honda ST1300 that I am going to go look at. This bike seems like it would be something between a sport bike and the Goldwing, which would be perfect for me. Like you, I have a good feeling about the reliability of Hondas having had a few. I was looking at other models that had a few more features, but I either didn't like the riding position or I questioned the quality of the motor. I do wish the Honda had a six speed, but it sounded like you don't have any problem with cruising highway speeds and still get pretty fair fuel economy. Anyways, I appreciate your video because it answered some questions for me and gave me confidence in this bike!

Just to say the in the 4 months I've owned the FJ its Handbags came off as soon as it made it home from the dealer and are still on my garage floor! So maybe its the rider missing my R1----but at 58 years old its time to slow down a little and mess with the Harley riders!! Right!!LOL

  • @terrypenrose5195
    @terrypenrose5195 Před 10 lety

    I recently went through the same bike decision as you did, GTR vs FJR vs ST. The GTR is the middleweight, has the strongest and perhaps understandably, most uneconomical engine yet, paradoxically, has the smallest (22lt) fuel tank. The ST is the top weight and yet despite having the least powerful engine conceals the weight well and still delivers the best fuel economy, it also has the largest (27lt) fuel tank and best range. The FJR is the lightweight, although, through clever design the Honda feels lighter. The FJR engine is strong and smooth, delivering fuel economy at the midrange of these three (around 20kpl) and has a 25lt fuel tank. I was leaning heavily toward the ST for my soon to be realised, around Australia Adventure, however owing to the myriad reports of the "Pan Weave" (which incidentally killed a UK Police Officer and subsequently lead to the cancellation of any more UK Police orders), in the final analysis I chose the FJR, not because it excelled at any one thing, but because it did everything very well. If not for the Pan Weave issue, I'm pretty sure I would have had an ST parked in my garage right now. Stay upright and lovin life. Peace

      I know you will be happy with your FJR. I am not going to go over why the "Pan Weave" is a non-issue, again. We've beaten that one to death. Happy riding.

  • @FDominicus

    I've driven the ST for around 1200 km from Germany to Paris and back it's a comfortable bike for longer distances. Anyway i'm now driving a FJR 1300 (with some modificuations) The reason I took this biks is that the 1200 get instable above 180 kmk/h. The Yamaha doesn't. I know it's unimportant and even illegal to drive that fast anywhere but in Germany. But I'm using it here and if the highway. What is better with the Honda is the changing gears. And the widnshield is better.

    I have never experienced "wobble" either. However the stock Dunlops were terrible and I would not have wanted to ride an overloaded bike over 100 mph on those tires. I can't overstate how much difference the Bridgstone BT020's made. You either "get" the ST1300 or you don't.

  • @OccasionallyEvil
    @OccasionallyEvil  Před 12 lety

    No, I traded the Vstrom in to get the Honda. I do like the FZ6R. Unfortunately dealers don't and they won't give me much for it, in fact they don't even want it. I would have liked to keep all four but to insure all four gets to be too much. Plus my wife says three is the limit.

  • @OccasionallyEvil
    @OccasionallyEvil  Před 11 lety +1

    Good Point. I know, it's ridiculous. People are horny for horsepower (that they will seldom, if ever, use). All the dyno tests show the ST, the FJR and C14 having identical curves to 6000 rpm until the other bikes pull away. After 13,000 km on my bike I can count the # of times I have exceeded 6000 rpm on one hand, What's more important then 0 - 60 are the 50 - 90 mph passing times. The ST1300 is outstanding there. I have never felt I needed more power. And I am not a slow rider.

  • @mabutoo
    @mabutoo Před 11 lety +1

    No wobbling, no excessive heat, little sun washing out digital displays but mostly focus on Tach & speedometer, no problems with seals but I am diligent about the maintenance schedule. I can't support these claim as my bike has been a good girl since I took her off the showroom floor. Perhaps you just had a bad assembler or mechanic. My only complaint was the stock tires (which is normal for all bikes).

    Glad to see you're an atheist, me too :) The Concours is definitely a more up to date and technologically superior bike. I never got a chance to ride it, my Kawasaki dealer is quite a bit father distance that my Honda dealer. I got the ST1300 at a discount because, although a brand new bike, it is a 2010 model. So i paid about $2000 less than the Connie. I know I would have loved the C14. But I'm really happy with the Honda.

    You almost sound like you're apologizing for picking the ST1300. Don't bother. You paid for it, you like it, you ride it ... and nothing else matters. I have an RSTD, but I'd like to have an FJR. As for a Goldwing ... keep your ST1300, as it's a very nice bike. Safe and happy riding to you!

  • @mabutoo

    Useless sarcasm? I have owned my ST since 2008, no wobble. Hit 120mph, no wobble. I have the stock seat; yes not comfortable at first but I have sat on it on 3000 mile trips. Do you actually own one or just compiling what others are saying. BTW, I cruise at 80mph and when touring U-turns come up more often than you might think; its not just about highway miles.

  • @OccasionallyEvil
    @OccasionallyEvil  Před 12 lety

    I think the FJR over the FZ1 is a wise choice. You don't need anything "sportier" than the FJR and you sure don't need or would never use more power than that bike has, unless you race on the track. I am beginning to think the ST1300 might make my
    GSX-R redundent....hmmmm.

  • @OccasionallyEvil
    @OccasionallyEvil  Před 11 lety

    I wanted a new bike, a Goldwing costs $13000 more. I've ridden a Goldwing and I prefer the ST1300, simply because I will forfeit luxury for speed. Who said I didn't want a Sport Tourer?

    Dear OccasionallyEvil
    I've heard a lot about this bike and have been entertaining purchasing the ST1300. My issue is that I've heard about a high speed wobble that was pretty serious and caused major police forces around the globe to not use them. Can you elaborate on this, and now that you have had the bike, can you discuss the Pro's and Cons. How has the reliability been?

    What about the weight?
    ST is 100lbs heavier than the FJR.
    FJR handles better also and is faster.
    ST is more expensive.
    FJR easier to maintain also.

    • @OccasionallyEvil
      @OccasionallyEvil  Před 10 lety

      Yes it's a heavy bike but that adds to it's stability on the highway. It still gets better gas mileage then the FJR. Yes to all your other points. I already have a bike that out performs the FJR (GSX-R750) in those areas so I wasn't looking for an all out performance bike.

      I get 50MPH just communting.

    • @OccasionallyEvil
      @OccasionallyEvil  Před 10 lety

      I'm going by motorcycle reviews online. For instance MCN: St1300 45mpg (Imperial) vs FJR 41. All other reviews I've read post similar results. The point being that if the extra weight of the Honda does not result in excess gas consumption then the weight is not a disadvantage. In fact, it's a plus for the reason I give. Everyone gets different results depending on how they ride.

    • @OccasionallyEvil
      @OccasionallyEvil  Před 10 lety

      No one is disputing that the FJR is a wonderful motorcycle. People will choose these bikes depending on what they want them for, the service from their dealer, the warranties, comfort level, etc. For instance when I went to my Yamaha dealer to look at the FJR I was pretty much ignored. At Honda I felt appreciated. Little things like that can sway your decision. Performance-wise the bikes are very similar. Quarter mile times: FJR 10.9/Honda 11.3. Not too many people are going to notice or care about a .4 second difference.

    • @455Transam
      @455Transam Před 10 lety

      OccasionallyEvil On the 2 FJR sites I frequent the MPG ranges from about 41 to 52MPG......depends how FAST you ride. As far as weight it's not just about if it effects MPG, it's about moving the bike around and how it feels at LOW speed......100lbs is a LOT of added weight at low speed!

    Honda is too "vanilla" for me, I chose the FJR, not as large as the Connie 14 and more powerful than the Honda.
    The FJR gets better milage than the Connie and the Connie is harder to work on and the FJR is lighter than the Honda.

  • @OccasionallyEvil
    @OccasionallyEvil  Před 11 lety +1

    Yes I have investigated it. This is like arguing the existence of god or UFO's. You either believe it or you don't and nothing anyone says can change one's mind. I don't believe it for two reasons: 1) I don't think a company with the reputation of Honda would continue to build thousands of ST1300s over the last 10 years with this defect. 2) After 15000 km of riding my bike I have never experienced it. Those who have either had under-inflated tires or an overloaded bike, or both.

  • @OccasionallyEvil
    @OccasionallyEvil  Před 11 lety +1

    Hey Buddy, I'm sure you are a nice guy in reality. Anyways I have not ridden an ST1100 but EVERY review by EVERY motorcycle review site agrees that the ST1300 is a FAR better bike than the one it replaced, the ST1100. If you liked the 1100 better than good for you. Just don't slam the 1300 'cause you lose credibility.

    LOL, that is funny. The ST and the FJR are in my opinion, the same, except the wobble. Yes there is wobble, keep telling yourself there isn't, but it won't change that there is. I have had a ST1300 and a K1600GT. Just recently traded the K1600GT for an FRJ, and a K1300S, given I wanted a sport touring bike, and something more sporty. Don't get me wrong, the ST is a fine machine, I just found that I could get the same ride quality on a much better looking bike, which would be the FJR. ST=Ugly
