- After Top Gun hit theaters in 1986, suddenly Tom Cruise’s career went into overdrive. With his next three films, Cruise tried to stretch himself as an actor and prove he was more than just the heartthrob of the moment. The Color of Money, which came out just a few months after Top Gun, would pair him with Paul Newman (in an Oscar- winning performance) and director Martin Scorsese. 1988’s Rain Man would pair him with another veteran actor who would take home an Oscar, Dustin Hoffman, while in between he would make the slick, entertaining drama Cocktail.
In this edition of Tom Cruise Revisited, we examin how these three movies were important to Cruise as both a box office draw and actor, paving a way for his next round of star-movies in the nineties.

Tom Cruise is one of the few Hollywood actors from the 1980s left that still has his cool and hasn’t been a washed up actor who hates moviegoers!
Tom Cruise definitely deserves an Oscar, and should have won for Magnolia or Rain Man, in my opinion.
Or Born on the fourth of July
He was on fire in the 80's and 90's just got even better Collateral he should have won an Oscar
Tom Cruise has shown via these 3 different films, that he is more than just a heartthrob. Out of the 3 Rain Man is probably his most greatest achievement. Although Co star Dustin Hoffman had the more showier part as Autistic brother Raymond but Cruise gives a very underrated performance as Charlie Babbitt who goes on this incredible journey of spiritual awakening and by the end of the movie becomes a different person to that at the start of the movie.
collateral with Jamie fox surprised me as a kid inn2004
omg I was a bartender when Cocktail came out & we all started juggling & spinning bottles all over the place , the managers would get pissed bc we were spilling & wasting so much booze ... LOL 🍸
I highly recommend The Hustler (1961), the original movie that The Color Of Money is a sequel to if you haven't seen it. One of Paul Newman's finest performances, alongside Jackie Gleason, George C. Scott, and Piper Laurie. One of the greatest character studies/sports dramas ever made. It's well worth your time.
100% agree. It's terrific.
Definitely going to check it out
I have always said to anyone that questions Tom Cruises's acting ability to watch Rain Man. He may not stand out in that role, but he holds his own in every scene especially with Dustin Hoffman who was in exceptional form. While he also handily goes toe to toe with Jack Nicholson in A Few Good Men, that is responding in kind (calm to calm anger to anger... still great to watch) whereas here, he needs to sometimes mirror, sometimes counter. A very underrated performance
Just found out that Tom Cruise's line in 'The Color of Money ' was responsible for the title of one of the greatest video game franchises ever made.
Moselle-Re: poolcue case
"What you got in there?"
Cruise as 'Vincent'-"In here? 😁...DOOM"
Also damn Cruise has managed to age as well as Rob Lowe, youd swear they were still in their early 40's.
♥️ Loved this breakdown, thank you. You left me wanting more. Rain Man & Magnolia are personal stand outs for me. Cocktail 🍸 I just love it, for the sheer blissful escapism x
Tom Cruise is one of the more interesting performers I’ve ever seen I mean it’s literally a tale of three different decades for him the 80s the 90s and now in the 2010s In my opinion I think Tom Cruise has found his comfort zone with the action mission impossible movies I really wish she would venture out a little bit more and do films he did back in the 80s like cocktail the rain man born on the Fourth of July.I think the color of money really show that Tom Cruise can be a very cocky borderline unlikable individual and him Performing with Paul Newman was absolutely stellar
thanks Chris B for another great vid on our fav Tom Cruise...keep them coming.
Couple of things I'd like to point out about Cocktail, its under-rated guilty pleasure with perhaps one of the best soundtracks from the 80s, Roger Donaldson directed after giving us perhaps one of the best cold-war thrillers - No Way Out. Cruise learned fast after the critical beating it got and hasn't looked back ever since, except maybe for the Mummy and the sequel to Jack Reacher! 🙂
Cruise is the most enduring movie star in moder era. Yes he is scientology but you can denied that he is mega star for 5 decades since the 80's and nobody can compare his famous /BO success as leading man /legacy to him today
He the the most famous not just in flim industry but all entertainment industry , he is Icon of hollywood
We growing up with his movie and he still biggest star today , phenomenon
Tom cruise? Last action hero? Sole savior of movies? Yes, I'm here
I Say Rain Man was the start of him starting to get taken seriously and leaving his heartthrob image behind.
Colour of money is so underrated
Tom cruise is my favorite actor these are some of my favorite movies by him
He ruled the 80s
He still rules
Still.
Did a pretty decent job ruling the 90’s too!
am i using you rainman ......yes..........thats the best !!!!!!!!
This was awesome. Thanks.
Cruise should have won the Oscar for Born On The 4th July
Can you do a video on why tom cruise so big and his counter parts didn't, what set him apart from actors known as the brat pack or other young actors.. I find it fascinating
I saw this in theaters without even knowing it was a semi-sequel.
great movie. "...I'm back! 'CRRRACK!!' "
Tom is my dude, are you guys doing a part 2 to this
Cruise can definitely still play the way he played back then. It's Tom Cruise.
The man is amazing
It's not illegal to count cards, it's also not illegal for the casino to kick you out, for any reason. But the only reason to kick you out is when they lose money, and short of a heist, counting cards does exactly that.
If I never hear Cocaoma again in my life, it'll be too soon.
Lol@ bagging on Kelly and elizabeth for getting old. Savage
Tom will never do movies like this again. Facts are facts
What do you got in there ? In here ? Doom lol that was a good line
I know Tom’s not the same guy we knew back in the 80’s and 90’s, but at least we’ll always have the shirtless volleyball scene in Top Gun.
Some parts of the video are a bit hard to make out due to the music being a bit too loud in the Color of Money section.
I REALLY MISS Tom acting in great films like A few Good Men and Jerry Maguire....
Why didn't you just wait until August 5th and do a Risky Business 40th Anniversary lookback?
"Since When" is a highly underrated song. Just sayin...
Tom Cruise is the GOAT
👍👍👍🎥
We knew Forrest from Fast times
Ps

Never go full
The problem with Tom Cruise is that after joining CoS he only acts in Real Life now and all his movies are just some scenario in which Tom Cruise runs around like haunted...
Cruise Control
Joblo is the best channel on the CZcamss (except for the fuckin bells at the end👎)
So you’re saying he’s been overrated and mediocre since day 1 ?
Can’t watch this. The background music is overpowering.
Before scientology 😢
guess what hobby I picked up again with a bit more narcissism I couldn't back up? nope. pool.
Colore dei soldi 8emezzo, cocktail sette e mezzo, rain man 9❤❤❤❤
No woke no politics great actor beutiful.the man the Legend ❤❤❤❤❤
Dont forget Legend, Oblivion or Minority Report, lets try and forget The Mummy and War of the Worlds eh 😢 no-ones perfect 😂 and not entirely convinced about 'he wouldn't act again in a movie so thinly conceived or plotted again' bit.. MI2 utterly stank, forgetful nemesis, shit slow-mo/bullet-time and mistakes aplenty
