Was the Robocop Remake Really That Bad?

  • The 2014 Robocop remake wasn't well received by fans of the original. Just like any successful movie franchise from any particular decade, there’s one unwritten rule; if it’s much loved, generated enough in box office returns, and is clearly still a relevant IP, you know what to eventually expect. Yup, that’s right movie-fans - a remake! Love em’ or loathe em’ they’re not going away anytime soon, and sometimes they can not only offer a fascinating take on the original movie but also enhance the legacy by bringing in a whole new audience. 1982’s The Thing is an incredible remake of the 1951 original, along with similarly effective fellow horror remake The Fly from 1986. Also, more recently we’ve had gems such as Martin Scorsese’s The Departed, the hugely popular A Star is Born and, of course, The Wicker Man. Okay, maybe not that particular example, but Nicolas Cage randomly punching people in a bear suit has to hold some value to movie-fans, somewhere. Surely. Anyone? However, the point is, remakes are not necessarily a bad thing if handled correctly. Which brings us nicely to the latest in our series on the much lauded, and maligned, Robocop franchise, as we dive in head first into Jose Padilha’s 2014 remake. Did the movie manage to capture the violence and biting satire of the first movie, or was it destined to be just as pathetic as ED-209 in part three. Find out here, on REVISITED!

It's beige. Safe, ubiquitous, boring. The original was a garish, super bright, in-your-face neon orange. Beige sells well, neon orange is niche. Hollywood is risk averse. They want all the glory of a cult movie without giving us a cult movie. Best they can do is nostalgia bait-and-switch.

I don’t think Hollywood with all of their supposed knowledge of film history even understands just what a cult movie is. I have fond memories of Robocop and even Robocop 2 to an extent. The first film was about so much more than a cybernetic police officer. It had well written dialogue, well choreographed action sequences, memorable characters, clever satire, and a dark grittiness. I even love its mistakes like Dick Jones having 20 foot long arms when he falls out the window to his death. That scene to me is the visual equivalent of a punk rock band messing up one chord on a song. It’s one of those imperfections that add to its charm.

    • @ValkyrionX2

I agree with Thomas, it's because of the script mainly how they view robocop in the each movie.
Peter Weller as Robocop potrayed as an upgrade for existing law enforcement, because they view human need to be improved and machine is not dependable proven by the malfunction of ED-209 during presentation as it brutally killed 1 board member. So making Human with cybernetic enhancement is the go to and it's a success, proven by how they try to make another Robocop in Robocop 2.
Kinnaman as Robocop potrayed as a downgrade from a machine law enforcement, because machine in this world run perfectly and Robocop only serve a purpose as tool to help entering US market, once his role done he need to be discarded.

Spot on with the 'twisted sense of humor'. Looks like a trademark of the duet of Paul Verhoeven and Edward Neumeier since they had successfully recreated it in the "Starship Troopers" a decade later. The 2014 version had no chance of doing it.

I watched the 'Peter Weller Q&A with Harry Knowles' on CZcams this week, and for me, Weller sums it all up in the video. The original movie was a story of biblical events, featuring a dead golum, who only looked alive; while the remake featured an alive actor, who's delivery was pretty much dead. To say they missed the point, is to say the same about every remake or reboot. Today it's all about action, but no soul.

One of the main things i disliked about it, beyond the fact it wasn't an R/18 rating, was that while Robocop no longer moving like a robot is more in keeping with the idea of it being in the future and the likely tech, however it just stopped it feeling like he was Robocop and it felt more like he was just a guy in a suit. That way Robocop moved in the originals will never be beaten, the way he turns his head, then his body follows while his head stays still, it was just perfect. Not to mention, the makeup really made it look like his face was grafted onto the mech parts, which also isn't the case with the remake.

The thing that bugged me the most was the ED-209 was surprisingly competent. It felt like it just needed to be tweaked instead of being dangerously incompetent.
Mostly the movie just felt like it was copying random bits of satire from the first without having any real target. The fun of the original is it was aping Judge Dredd's absurdist satire and seemed genuinely angry about various subjects. The reboot didn't seem to hate anything enough to thoroughly mock it.

Peter Weller as Robocop potrayed as an upgrade for existing law enforcement, because they view human is not effective enough and machine is not competent proven by the malfunction of ED-209 during presentation as it brutally killed 1 board member. So making human with cybernetic enhancement is the go to and it's a success, proven by how they try to make another Robocop in Robocop 2, although none of the effort proven success, and sadly they make an Evil Robocop instead because they use criminal's brain.
Kinnaman as Robocop potrayed as a downgrade from a machine law enforcement, because machine in this world run perfectly and Robocop only serve a purpose as tool to help entering US market, once his role done he need to be discarded.
I just wish they maybe tweak the script as Robocop which seen as a downgrade initially turns out to be an upgrade from pure machine, for example he is not instantly arrestted, instead making a deal to catch bigger criminal or something.

Everything came together on that film so perfectly and Weller is just amazing as Murphy. It's not perfect, but it's such a diamond in the rough. Each incremental outing seemed worse than the last and that includes the reboot which I found almost unwatchable. Yes exactly. The original is a total classic, it was an event at the time and a big deal, like Die Hard was, like Aliens, like Rambo or Predator. Anyone who likes the remake or thinks its not that bad, probably is a younger person who never saw the original at the time in the Cinema. They were too young or missed it for whatever reason. Seeing the film years later when you are now old enough is never the same thing. You can enjoy it and love it and be a fan, but you were not present for the event of the original. The going to see it with your mates on a cold opening, knowing nothing about it, and coming out of it afterwards totally blown away and buzzing. Spreading the word of mouth to your mates and going back to see it again and again propelling the film to a massive hit and the status it deserves. There are so few event films like this now and its sad. People have become spoiled by all the effects movies of today and most of them are utterly forgettable and bland and have zero impact.
The original had a massive impact due to its shock value violence and the fact that it was so unique. And its also a good film with a plot. So you can watch it again and again and always find something else you missed or some new message or just laugh at the over the top comic violence. Everyone was talking about Robocop when it came out, those that loved it, those that were critical of the violence, but people talked. No one even noticed the remake. It made no impact.

The remake didn't have any standout moments, or a cohesive story , the original score by Basil Poledaris was incredible with the film divided into continuous cool moments.
The remake is like most others huge budget wasted by writers who didn't know what to do with it.
For it to work you also need a director who can handle the job.

I liked it. Of course it doesn't live up to the gory original. But it looked great and was at least better than part 3. My only issue with it was....the drama was taken out. I find the story of Alex Murphy being a machine struggling to remember who he was...mean while a wife and son is not completely aware that he is still alive in some way. It was heart crushing....venture bros did a great re telling of that story. Had me crying my eyes out. But the remake kind of glossed over that aspect. But it was still a decent film.

This is one of the better full reboots. Sure, it's not as gritty or sarcastic as the og, but in its own universe it's quite good. The pg13 body horror element and additional familial elements were a very good touch and Gary Oldman always kills everything he's in.

I finally watched the remake about 6 months ago and the only thing I can remember about it is a funny scene where Robocop solves all the city's unsolved crimes using his AI. That's all that stuck in my memory. I thought at the time that it was ok, better than I expected, but it's a remake of an all time classic and that isn't good enough. I saw the original by the way at a preview in January 1988 (in the UK) and it is easily one of the best times I ever had in a cinema. The audience had never seen anything like it before and went nuts. It was more like a rock concert than a movie screening. Die Hard was the same. That was a good time to be a movie fan.

Unfortunately this just doesn't live up to the original. The only scene I like in the entire movie 🎥 is when Murphy/RoboCop is when he goes into the station and confronts the corrupt cops responsible. It is great as he sits there running through his evidence whilst at the same time his Robo Vision is analysing the incoming threat of Imminent violence from the Cop in front of him. It is glorious when he shoots him point blank. But otherwise it has no redeeming features

Films, like famous paintings, should never be remade. That demonstrates lack of originality and creativity. Robocop (1987) was a tremendously well-made film, one of the best sci-fi and cop movies ever made. There was no need to remake it as there is no reason to remake anything else. This review is appropriate.

I liked it. I never expected a carbon copy of the original. People would have complained about that as well. It was a different take on similar themes and more current and grounded in reality. My biggest complaint is some of the music choices. Some scenes are downright silly merely because of the . music. Others sound amazing. I would have liked it to be R rated with a little more "grit," but I also know that I watched the original as a small kid, and NO kid should be watching that. So it was probably a good moral decision and monetary decision to make it PG13.

When they announced Padilha was going to direct it I was excited! I've seen his previous work. It's violent, visceral, mature, intelligent. If anyone could reboot robocop with an interseting novel take that respected the spirit of the original, that was the guy. It was a perfect fit!
So what what really bothers me about this reboot is not even that it doesn't feel like the original robocop, but that it doesn't even feel like Padilha's previous work. What the hell happened there? Was his creative freedom stifled by producers or something like that?

Most people misunderstood the remake's intentions. What it means to be human. How far do you have to strip back everything and what remains that you can be called a living, sentient being? Where does consciousness begin and end? That scene where he wants to know what's left of him and his reaction after. How would you fee if you were reduced to just a head, windpipe, heart and lungs (and an extraneous hand)? Would you still consider yourself a human being? What if you were a transplanted brain in a completely robotic body?

I was already out of watching most cartoons by the time the 1st Robocop cartoon was out, but having seen it since I know I'd have enjoyed it (though just as an occassional watch). But I remember wishing at the time that they'd do something big, like a team-up special with one of the other then current cartoons I'd caught glimps of ( was Aliens an cartoon then?) In fact, I think if an overplayed franchise is on its last legs it'd be nice if they'd do one last big hurrah as an epic send off (just so long as it was either a good story still or at least a fun mindless adventure). Though Aliens vs Predator made me less sure of that plan.

The movie had to be different for today's audience and issues, and it DOES work hard to do that and DOES succeed somewhat. The automation plot is a good one. The man or machine is a good idea to run with. BUT it does fall down on the villains. Not compared to original robocop, but ANY movie. Keaton does his best - he's slimy and does the best impression of a CEO that I've ever seen on film. But the henchmen needed more. This concept has to be R rated - or forget it. A successful reboot is still possible - its all there for the taking.

Although I didn't hate the remake, it didn't have the charm of the originals. I also feel that it's a damned if you do and damned if you don't. If they have done a beat-for-beat remake, especially the iconic scene you mentioned they'd been criticised for lazy filmmaking. Doing something different, they got flack for that too. Although this is more of a problem for series' or long franchises, poor sequels can make people less enthusiastic to go back and remind themselves what was good about the early seasons or movies. Been catching a few of your videos lately and liking them. Snappy pacing, observational but also light-hearted.

The original RoboCop is a treasure. An ultra violent gift from the 90s when action was at its peak. The RoboCop wasn’t even close to the original. The sequel wasn’t even rated R when the first movie has levels of violence in it nobody had even seen before. The problem any sequel will have is to live up to the original movies and it’s almost impossible. Aliens and Terminator have the exact same issue and those are franchises with a lot more money behind them.

Funny that you didn't mention Scarface (1983), which was so successful a remake of the 1932 original that many people think it wasn't a remake. The problem with Robocop 3 was it was PG-13, so it couldn't be as biting as the first two. I'm generally not a fan of remakes, but I thought this one was better than average. I liked that it looked at it in a more serious way than the original instead of trying to compete with the comedy. Another one that is similar in this way was The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, although I enjoy the remake of that one more than the Robocop one. I was originally very skeptical of Ben Stiller in the role of Walter Mitty, but the completely different take on the story made it enjoyable.
