Black Companions of the Prophet | Dr. Shabir Ally

- We often talk about Bilal being a noble companion of the Prophet Muhammad. Were there other black companions? If so, what are their names and stories? Dr. Shabir discusses some black companions, including Ammar bin Yasir, Barakah, Zaid bin al-Harith and Usamah bin Zaid, and describes their significance. The companions of the prophet are akin to the apostles of Jesus in terms of importance. #Muslims consider them righteous individuals to be followed and respected. So it is noteworthy that these individuals despite being #black were part of the inner circle of the Prophet #Muhammad.

Prophet Muhammad SAW was breastfed by a Black woman who was a slave named Thuwayba who later during his Prophethood would accept Islam. Also, the first person to die for Islam was a Black woman named Sumayyah. King Negus a black Christian King gave the Prophet and his companions asylum after they were persecuted in Mecca so there are many examples of Black people who came thru for the prophet. Women and Black people are a huge component in helping to move Islam forward but people only mention Bilal for creating the adhan.
Christians giving assylikum and muslims cutting throats. Used to be happened and happens until hell fill with enough thieves and manipulators.
Rasoolullah sollallahu alayhi wasallim himself was not white, none of his relatives were white ,and neither His wives. Abdul Mutallib family wasn't white people. They were Adnani Arabs who were proud black people. Rasoolullah (s a w) said in His hadiths speaking to then the Sahabas and I quote " when ever Egypt opens for you to take my message there do be careful to treat those black people there with Woolley hair with respect because they are relatives through lineage and they are my relatives through marriage ", this is what He (s.a.w) said because Sayyida Hajara/Hagar the wife of Ibrahim and mother of Ismail,a black African woman from south of Egypt was the founder of the holy city of Makkah and the owner of ZamZam, and so speaking of only Sayyidina Bilal bin Rabah here doesn't make sense since the holy prophet (s a w) himself did not escape being black with of course dreadlocks. The debate will when the so called influencers come back to their senses and avoid saying it the half way or get forced by circumstances to say the truth.
@@adamsbismark7547where is this Hadith? I’d love to learn more about it. I always wondered that if Ishmael’s mother was a black African woman then that would make Arabs black
Exactly that's my point why is it that these so-called Islamic scholars start and end with Bilal as if Islam has no other black presents other than Bilal that is ridiculous
This series of talks on race have been great. I think you should have one on the Prophet’s (PBUH) last sermon. The issue of equality was so important that it was one the last things he spoke about and left for the uma.
William, you are absolutely correct. It was an issue close to the heart of Rasoolilaah saaws, because he knew that his people were still racists even after years of his teaching on brotherhood. Some of the copies of the Last Khutbah that you find today nothing in them at all about black, others do. When I first the prophets last khutbah about 40 years ago there was a line there that said "obey your leader even if he is a black Ethiopian with a head/hair like raisins". Not there now.
Mr Trimble, you are absolutely on point regarding the Last Khutbah of Rasoolilaah saaws. It has been drastically altered. Now when you do find a copy there is usually no mention of our Black forefathers. Or sometimes on one mention and that is the no superiority of one color over the other except for taqwa. And then there has been no footnotes explaining the essence of that statement. But then, the Messenger saaws.
of ALLAH azza wa jalla, Muhammad himself prophesied some of his ashaabee (companions) would change some of what he had left. This was according to a dream which he had. And all religious people Christians, Bene Israel and Muslims believe in and accept that some dreams are prophetic. The Arabic and Pakistani scholars, SOME who are very biased against Black People, should agree to reproduce the Last Khutbah in it's entirety. After which we should all sit down and re-purify our Deen by taking EVERYTHING out of it that men who call themselves scholars, have added over the years. After all, ALLAH, feel Tawheed al-Asmaa was-Sifaah, in the Oneness of His Names and Attributes, said to Nabiy Muhammad saaws: "This day, I have completed my favour upon you, PERFECTED FOR YOU YOUR DEEN and chosen for you al-islaam as your DEEN(Religion). ALLAH The One, perfected this deen. It needed NO further explanation nor elucidation, except those of Rasoolilaah. All of the rest need to be erased from history. For the Malaa'ikah Jabrieel told Nabiy Muhammad saaws, "these people (some of his ashaabee) have continued to be apostates since you(Muhammad saaws) left them...) Sahih Al-Bukhaari, vol. 6, hadiyth 149 and others.
First of all who coined word black should be shameless Whiteman.
Do you know that the Arabs at that time were black?
You talk facts
The name "ARAB" is from a black man
No they aren’t
But black peoples have big influence on islamic and Arab politics because of their faith
Grbouz
Very important reminder. Thank you so much!
Not only were many of the ashaabee of Rasoolilaah saaws, black, but also his father Abdullah was black and so were his uncles and his grandfather, according to a popular historian from Iraq, who wrote about 300 years after Prophet Muhammad, saaws.
,source please. Thanks for posting
While I agree that many of the sahabi were black his father Abdullah was not black.
Al-Jahiz is the historian you're referring to, I think.
Even the Great Companion and the righteous Khalif Omar was black, but this arabs will never admit it I agree that the tribe of the prophet "banu hashim" hailed from Africa. Prophet Moses, prophet Ismael (half black), prophet Suleyman were all blacks, but the arabs and the whites will never accept the truth. There is no way this Men of high morality and honour could be white, just saying. Its funny how they are trying to promote the agenda of "the only black person was bilal an ex-slave.
@@rashidfadhaye8100 very precise brother. We need to call a conference/symposium and invoke ALLAH on whether or not the prophets were Black AND whether or not Nabiy Muhammad saaws and his family were from the Black race or not. Aswaad wa Ahmar goes back to Egypt and beyond. Aadam the first human was black without a doubt. His wife and children were shades of black which extended to dark red which are covered in the Arabic Language. Did Allah create all colours of the human spectrum? Yes without a doubt. Some colours He created differently, for instance we are told that He azza wa jalla subhanahu wa ta'alaa, created Aadam with His own hands. While the forms and colours of some rebels and extreme sinners He has allowed their own behavior to alter, and changed some to show His Power, as with Musaa/Moses. Allah azza wa jalla, did not give Musaa a "shinning" hand but a white hand. And there was no disease or sickness in the hand. Thus the great Miracle. In the age of Moses/Musaa and the rebellious Children of Israaeel the only white human beings were those who Allah had cursed with whiteness as a result of Leprosy because of their beastiality. So ALLAH changed the hand of Musaa from black to white and the white had had no disease!!! The people in that age knew that they had witnessed a divine miracle. But the RACISTS have even changed that, what a horrible penalty they must pay for their many sins.
Sorry Sheikh you are mistaken. It was not Bilal (RA) who dreamt of Azaan, it was Abdullah bin Zaid (RA).
He knows. Its just convenient to this narrative

Bilal was an outstanding man. The Qu'ran and therefore the Adhan was intended to be recited, and Muhammad chose him specifically to do so. Music incarnate. Perhaps his is the Adhan recited in Jannah

Dr Shabir, could u plz review the book 'Quran & Secular Minds' (by Dr Shabbir Akhtar)?
Wasn't it Abdullah ibn Zaid that had the dream in which the call to prayer was revealed?
Wasn't Bilal's owner Umayyah ibn khalaf?
Wasn't Sumayyah bint Khabbat the slave of Al-Mughairah and was killed by Abu Jahl?

@Wingchunspecialist to be technical, Arab isn't really a race or bloodline type of thing. One who speaks Arab is an Arab
in my town, in honoring Bilal Ibn Rabbah, we call Muathin a bilal. Like in jumuah prayer, a mosque official will announce imam is mr. x, khatib is mr. y, and bilal is mr. Z
May Allah continue to grant you goodness and knowledge, sister. You appear to be unbiased and stressed on your questions. The brother, on the other hand, tends to babble mostly. The Arabs of antiquity were jet black!
If Moses and Abraham were Muslim how come their prayer’s aren’t the same as Muhammad?
Islam came to enligh the human race as we are one race.

The holy prophet Muhammad s a w himself was not different those types of black people, imam Ali bin Abi Talib was also a black man as Sayyidina Bilal bin Rabah, and Umar Bin Hattab, Abubakar bin Kuhafa, Ummu Khadijah and Hafsa, A'isha were all black African women. Ummu Maria Kibtiyya the mother of his male son Ibrahim. And even when ever Christians are praised in Qur'an it's referred to black African Christians. Prophet (s a w) was a black man with dreadlocks just as Musa alayhi wasallim and Essah ( a.s.) . please Shuyukh go further beyond those figures because there were many many more who were because practically black Africans were the biggest number among Sahabas. The prophet Sollallahu alayhi wasallim himself was not white, his grand father Abdul Mutallib wasn't white, his both parents were black people.
Black people are the original people of the book. The real Israelites. The chosen people of God.

So why won’t you date a black man or allow your daughters?
I believe Dr Ally is genuinely not racist but I am afraid that this can not be said about Islam through history. I find this site very informative with lots of references. wikiislam.net/wiki/Qur'an,_Hadith_and_Scholars:Racism
Allah and his prophet made it very clear to us that , islam has no tribe and noh race 🙏.
Islam was sent to all mankind .
A racist can only be seen as a Muslim in the eyes of humans but never in the eyes of the almighty Allah
Bilal was not Ethiopian bus father was Arab
Also, Islam was first brought to the west by The Ammadiyyah movement and Master Fard Muhammad and if it were not for them and The Most Honorable Elijah Muhammad, Malcolm X and Muhammad Ali we all wouldn't be able to enjoy these religious freedoms. Blacks and Ammadiyyah did more for Islam in the west than anyone else in Arabia has ever did or will do in the future you can't mention Islam and not mention the sacrifices and jail time and riots Elijah Muhammad and his followers had to endure.
A whole Surah 31 (chapter) of the Quran, was named after Luqman, a black Nubian man probably from Egypt or Sudan. Are you still looking for the status of black people in Islam? Quran is the final revelation of Allah to mankind if you are not mentioned in it am sorry it's too late for you. Both Allah and his messenger (SAW) recognise black people if you are still racist then away with the Shaytan he is the first racist.

Shabir, what about Nabtal b. al-Harith? How did Muhammad describe him? Was he a "black man, with long flowing hair, enflamed eyes and ruddy cheeks." Who did Muhammad compare him to? What would the liberal progressives of the BLM say about this? If what you are saying is true then why are there hadiths that point out various parts of Muhammad's body were "white" His thighs, his stomach, his arm pits and other parts were referred to in the hadiths. Why was this the case., Shabir?
white thigh, Sahih Bukhari 1.367,
white armpit, Sahih Bukhari 2.141,
white man, Sahih Bukhari 1.63, 2.122, 4.744,
rosy color, Sahih Bukhari 4.747 & 748
Then we had judgement day. Remember this as well - On the Day when (some) faces will be whitened and (some) faces will be blackened; and as for those whose faces have been blackened, it will be said unto them: Disbelieved ye after your (profession of) belief? Then taste the punishment for that ye disbelieved. (Âl 'Imran 3:106)
So there is a great deal more to this topic than just a few companions who may have been of coloured complexion. What I see his is a case of kitman, Shabir, deceit by omission.
We know there are problems with racism in Islam. Have a look at how the Somali refugees have been treated in Egypt. Is this just an Egypt thing or is it endemic in Islam? I could go elsewhere. The most important facet of racism in Islam, as I see it, is the Quran itself. How presumptuous of Arabs to force non Arabs to learn the Quran in classical Arabic. That, of course, is what ever Quran they are actually reading. What are we looking at now? I believe 37 different Qurans and Islam follows hafs. A transmitter who died in 796 and lived in Kufa, southe of Baghdad, in Iraq
I am sorry Shabir if you are going to do one of these "look BLM" we are interviews, then at least be honest.
David Browne, my black or white brother, it is you who are being deceived and misled. For instance, the TRANSLATION in al-Qur'aan is wrong not al-Qur'aan itself. That passage which you misquote should have been translated: "On the Day when some faces will be TURNED white and some faces TURNED black". ALLAH azza wa jalla subhanahu wa ta'alaa, is directing this mainly to the white racists of the world because that have hated Black People all of their lives without a real cause, that day their faces will be turned black. And Black People who have believed and followed Muhammad saaws, their faces will be turned white from wuzhu prior to salaat. Not only their faces but their head, arms, hands and feet. And we, in shaa ALLAH, will meet our Nabiy Muhammad saaws, in that state in Jannah. ALHAMDU LILAAHI, Praise belongs to ALLAH. OH WHAT A HAPPY DAY THAT WILL BE!!!
Aboo Hurairah said that once he was with ALLAH's Messenger saaws when they visited Baqiy(graveyard) and the Prophet said, "Peace be upon you oh dwellings of believing people. Certainly we will follow you all when Allah wills. I wish that we could see our brothers." Aboo Hurairah ask, "Are not we your brothers oh Message of ALLAH?" The Messenger of ALLAH replied, "No rather you are my ashaabee(my companions) but my brothers have not yet come, and I will go before them to the HAWD(His Place in Jannah). So he was asked, how will you know those who have not yet come of your Ummah? Rasoolilaah answered and said, "If a man has horses with white faces and legs among horses that are totally black, would not he be able to distinguish his horses? So surely they will come on the Day of Resurrection with white faces, arms, and legs from wudoo,(he repeated this three times) and I will go before them to the HAWD.
And surely some men among you all will be turned away from from my Hawd like a lost camel is turned so that he will not bring disease to the cattle. I would call out to them, 'Come forth, come forth, but a voice will say they have changed your Deen after you left and continued to go back on their heels. So I will say let them get lost, let them get lost.
Recorded in Muslim and others.
@@salahudinrahim1367 |We live in worrying times my friend. It is still the use of black being reflective of the Devil and hell. We also saw it over the dog incident with Muhammad. Remember he wanted to kill all dogs because Gabriel allegedly did not like them. After the companions protested that they needed them for hunting and herding, he relented for all but black dogs. There is a pattern here as is there a developing pattern that Islam came down from the royalty in about the 790s as that is when it first gets a mention in the pages and on the rocks of history. This is 60 years after Muhammad and forty years after Uthman. It is just not the narrative that is looking shaky, it is the whole shabang. I am still plugging for Malik ibn Anas as the instigator. What say you?
What about white people 🤣? Did Muhammad have any white companions?
This is one proof Muhammad is from God. It is not logical if God hates black people. They are His creation too. So, it is obvious that racism is not from God, but from the evil one.

The beloved Prophet Muhammad Ibn Abdullah blessings peace & salutations be upon him was a Meccan Arab from the Tribe of Bani Hashim of the larger Tribe of Quryish. There's no eye witnesses accounts in the Hadiths or divine revelations from ALLAH (S.W.T.) that describe the Holy Prophet was of African decent or any prior Prophet's mentioned. In addition, they were not White either. Peace & Blessings be upon the wonderful human being Prophet Muhammad who was truly a miracle. It was mentioned in the Hadith Sahih Bukhari that when describing the physical attributes of Prophet Musa, i.e., Moses peace be upon him, that he was a brown man with curly hair. Which makes sense that Prophet Moses Peace be upon him was a Sephardic Hebrew from a desert community. It was never said that he was of African descent or black. There's also no evidence, either mentioned in the Holy Quran or Hadiths, that Hajar (R.A.) was African either. She was a servant of a despotic king in possibly Egypt or Assyria when the beloved Prophet & Khalil, i.e., friend of ALLAH (S.W.T.) Ibrahim, i.e., Abraham married her. Although, to be more blunt, the Holy Mission of the Prophet's is very important. Not concerning their physical appearance. Were there African Prophet's & righteous people of faith? Yes, of course. ALLAH (S.W.T.) says it in the Holy Quran. That Messengers were sent to all people's of the world. I'm a practicing Muslim who still is learning about my faith & will continue to do so until I'm dead & buried. I find it strange that there's a strange obsession of race & revisionist history. The Prophet's & the Sahaba or any person of faith in the Oneness of ALMIGHTY GOD, whatever their color or gender should be remembered for their devotional work & sacrifice.
Why are you so offended by the fact that some of the prophets or even prophet Muhammad may be black?
@alasanabayo8484
I'm not offended. By the tone/ accusation of your comment, you are offended. I made a historical & religious scholastic observation of my understanding of the Prophet Muhammad Peace be upon him life & of Prophet Musa, Prophet Ibrahim Peace be upon them as well as Sayyidna Hajjar may Allah be pleased with her. There's a common theme in modern neo liberal & secular circles to insert racial dynamics in religion even if those don't have faith. It seems like a political tactic to discredit other races & religions to support their own sense of superiority. ALLAH, the Most Gracious the Most Merciful, says in the Holy Quran that he sent Messengers to all peoples of the world, which would include Africans i.e. black people. Prophet Luqman Peace , by him, was by historical accounts, was either from Abbisynia, i.e., Ethiopia or Sudan. To be honest with you. It doesn't really matter how we feel. These wonderful people were emissaries of ALLAH (S.W.A.). We have to believe, love & follow them.
