Now THIS is the type of content we need more of! The way she and Ruth E. Carter give us an entire cultural anthropology course through fashion is amazing!
Literally was about to say the same thing- MORE OF THIS PLEASE!!
Beautiful portraits of Black art through fashion, jewelry and hair 🤩 and so succinct ❤
I love how you expressed this 💯💯💯
I cannot believe Vogue delivered essentially a Julie Dash mini-doc. Im breathless; this is so beautiful.
Came here to say just this
This film means so much to me as a descendant of Gullah Geechee folks. It’s simply perfect.
I saw in theater 🎥 Beautiful film needs to be seen on big screen for full effect. Great film ❤
🖤💙💚💛
Vogue should continue down this path of content production. It adds nuance to their brand and pop culture understandings of history through fashion.
This Film Should Have Won Best Picture for 1992. It is the most beautiful powerful and glorious films of the world. It is truly authentic, just not the colonists' version. I adore Julie Dash and so happy about the choice of Kerry James Marshall as her Creative Designer. This is beauty in cinema. Better than all other films ever made. Thank you so much Julie Dash for creating cinema.
Discovered "Daughter of the Dust" at the public library many years ago and reviewed it recently! I didn't want the story/film to end to end. Thank you Ms. Julie Dash; you are a wealth of history.
Daughters of the dust is an iconic movie and it’s sooooo amazing that they on vougeee!
“Urban testosterone” I’m using that moving forward. Julie, you are incredible
I’m so impressed by Ms. Dash and her iconic film. Thank you for your vision.
Thank you for this. Daughters' was the first time I'd seen African American women depicted on screen in such a lovely way. It's great to see and understand the creators behind the vision.
Daughters of the Dust was most breathtakingly beautiful period drama that I've ever seen. Julie Dash, you are appreciated. If you haven't watched this film yet, you're truly missing a masterpiece.
What a TREAT. I love Daughters of the Dust...it's literally iconic! What a great start to the day! 💕
Love this! PLEASE do Eve's Bayou next!
I remember seeing Daughters of the Dust when it first came out and was mesmerized. I watched it again a few years ago, and was still mesmerized. It’s such a beautiful story, a beautiful film. I think it’s time to watch it again.
I could listen to Julie Dash for hours. I love her relaxed tone, she is so comfortable to listen to. I was not familiar with her film 'Daughters of the Dust' but I am going to find it and watch it. I do remember first seeing Lemonade and I was in awe of the music, locations and clothing telling the story - it will be great to see some of what influenced Beyonce.
Daughters of the Dust was a household staple for me growing up and I have very fond memories of watching it with my mother. ❤❤❤
I will NEVER forget the feeling of seeing this film for the first time- so powerful and beautiful. Definitely an inspiration to me as an artist and director.
I Absolutely love this ❤ My Grandma grew up on Daufuski & moved to Savannah when she was 20yr met my Grandpa of Tybee. I would love to see more film’s about the Geechee people . A lot of the history has been lost with migration & development ect.
A movie way ahead of its time..and still a classic❤
Respect this women an overlooked artist of film
Honestly if I heard it looked like a Laura Ashley commercial, I would’ve taken it as a compliment because I love Laura Ashley. People will always have something negative to say, we can’t create art with everyone’s opinions in mind
I remember going to the theater seeing this rich gorgeous film!! Showcasing the diversity of aboriginal people. Women carrying their stories with emotion and spiritual beauty ✨️
This interview was well overdue. Iconic Movie, for so many reasons ✊🏾💗
I saw Daughters of the Dust when it first came out, I was in the 9th grade and it made me want to become a director/cinematographer. It is such a beautiful film visually and the storytelling is masterful. I still love it to this day. It covers so many issues.
I loved this so much and makes me appreciate the movie so much , Daughters if the Dust is a staple film in the African American spiritual community
Still love the authenticity of this film
What a pleasant surprise. Thanks for highlighting Daughters of the Dust.
So far ahead of her time and still is.
See this very much reminds me if like an Eves Bayou, no struggle, no ghetto just us existing and being actual ourselves not Hollywood black.
One of my favorite films of all time. Incrediably beautiful cinematograpy and display of our cultural history. Love it❤
A masterpiece.
This movie changed my life as a young melanated woman back in the early 90s. I still watch it every year, at least twice a year. The impact of this movie continues to reverberate within our culture and outside of it.
One of my most favorite movies... absolutely beautiful
Beautiful movie! I just watched it on the big screen for my college class, and I want to find the soundtrack so bad!
I love her breakdown! She is brillant! ❤
This movie came out when I was 22.. it has shaped me , stayed with me I still brings me joy I am sharing the experience now with younger people
Julie Dash is truly Unsung! Her film came out in the midst of the Black Film Renaissance and got lost in the sauce, and although Spike Lee, Robert Townsend, The Huddlin Brothers, and the Black Film Foundation supported her she still went by the wayside! So, I can understand why she would be excited about a reemergence of her images in a contemporary art form! If the movie were released again now, I think it would be better appreciated! 😉
This is INCREDIBLE.
THIS MOVIE IS ONE OF THE BEST MOVIES EVER. TOUCHED ON SO MANY TOPICS. OUR TOPICS.
This is amazing. Thank you.
My favorite film ever made, Visual Poetry.
Yeess! The influence of this film ....WOW! Bravo Julie Dash!
One of the greatest movies of all time. Masterpiece.

@@amarriidavis670 thankyou
This should be a remake
Why are there so many dislikes on this video? This was so interesting and inspiring!
Some people just aren’t there yet! 😔
I Absolutely love these dresses!!! My favorite is Yellow Mary's dress.
Wow. This was such a beautiful feature. Thank you!
A true creative soul!💗
Thank you so much for this interview! I'm grateful for Julie Dash.
My Aunt Kaycee Moore was in that movie.....she was a very lovely lady....😊
Now THIS is fantastic content! I had not heard of this movie and now I MUST watch it. Thank you for this great video interview with Ms Dash. 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
This is so refreshing and beautiful
This is hands down my favorite movie
I love the way in which she describes her ideas and what influenced her choices.
I hadn't heard of this movie until watching this video and now I am so intrigued! I'm definitely going to watch it tonight
Yeah, that film I I didn’t understand the storyline, but visually I’ve never been able to get it out of my mind either. It was so earthy and beautiful, like wow. Also to know she worked with Kerry James Marshall, is so freaking cool. He’s one of my favorite artist!
Saw it at a video store and loved it, such an amazing story and beautifully shot
This is the most edifying Vogue video ever. Thank you!
Thank you for this!
Julie Dash is a Silver Screen Goddess....."Daughters of the Dust" Lives On.
Thank you for this story.
Love love love this film I'm so happy this popped up on my feed ❤
I happened across this film in my feed 7/15/2023. My first time and loved it. Reminds me of our biblical lost but not lost history!. Thank you whoever posted these two articles for me to enjoy!!
Your film was so authentic!
so sad for those that don't truly know the lineage of Africa spirituality. I study Umbanda, there was so much richness woven in. The fact that you had Nana wearing what I see as purple, is the color of Nana Boriqia in the line of Umbanda. I'm so blessed to have come across this movie. Thank you 🙏
Wearing white is what you were in Umbanda ceremonies called Gira's. I'm an initiate in the line of Umbanda..
YES! Love this!!!
I would have loved such a film back in the day. I can feel the sheer elegance and significance of this film and I have not even seen it. I see it in my feed though...I know what I'm going do tonight💐
My all time favorite movie. Ms. Dash was too far ahead of the movie business when she made this film. 30 years later people are finally courageous enough to give this film the attention and praise it deserved.
I say Daughters of the Dust is breathtaking!
How dare a filmmaker tell someone else your lived experience is not authentic!?!?! THAT IS NEVER EVER EVER EVER HAPPENING AGAIN. Thank you forever Ms Dash. You were ahead of the world and they are catching up.
Wow I'm truly inspired by Julie Dash. This was eye opening
Yessss thank you🤍🩶
one of my faves
This is my all time favorite films!!
Wow. I’ve never heard of this movie. Loved this piece on it.
@7:03 A Yt movie executive telling a Blk person that their film is not authentically Blk is exactly how racism manifests in Hollywood.
I remember seeing a video of Denzel saying a Jewish film executive told him he wanted him to play this really offensively stereotypical character, and Denzel asked him in a pointed way, "Would you do that with your ppl?" CRAZY
This is amazing thanks Vogue the culture needed this !!!
I absolutely loved this movie!
Love this.
Love that movie, and the soundtrack.🤎🥲
Much respect to this goddess ❤
I hate to say I know nothing about this movie. Thank you for this piece.
I’m so happy this popped into my feed because it looks like beautiful cinematography telling a story about Geechie culture. Also wow 🤦🏾♀️ the ignorance of Hollywood. White dresses are essential in certain black cultures (ex. Yoruba/Vodou/Hoodoo ceremonies).
LEGENDARY JULIE DASH!
Wonderful film saw it many years ago 😊
YES
Bravo
Watching this movie is true honor to our ancestors ❤❤❤ Geechee is I❤❤❤
EPIC
Well, it was an uniquely interesting movie
❤beautiful. I like the Daughters of the dust movie. Happy Ms. Dash was featured on this large platform. More movies should depict black people as she did in a dignified manner.❤
Wow🎉
love this film
❤
Omg we used to be Facebook friends, and she always liked my post until I deleted my Facebook. I had no idea she worked on these projects.
