I like the new colorless extra turn spell for my extra turns deck. I also like the new Chandra for my Chandra EDH deck, and I want to put in Jaya's Pheonix in there as well. I was going to get the Eldrazi and Sliver deck until I saw the price. Just singles for this set for me.
These free-to-play games really bother me. They're all designed to exploit the addiction loops that get a few whales to waste thousands of dollars. As a professional game developer, I refuse to work on these products, and they represent the death of everything I ever loved about making games. The irony is not lost on me that I enjoy paper Magic, but this is also the reason I don't and never will play Arena. Even if I never spend a penny, I refuse to support the predatory ecosystem. Games like this make their money by getting as many users as possible so they can find those they can exploit. That's why they spend the money to advertise on channels like yours... each dollar they spend on attracting a new user is worth potentially much more once they have you hooked. As one designer told me, "we build artificial walls, and then we sell ladders." Gross. Game design should be about creating fun and joy. Sell me the game once so you don't have to design it to reach into my wallet while I'm trying to enjoy it. I don't say this to criticize your choice of sponsor here, but I lament the sickness that has taken over the industry I used to love working in.
Well said. I've fallen victim to this sort of game previously. I had a lot of fun, but spent way too much money on Holy Powder so our guild could try to win Holy Wars in Rage of Bahamut.
Insert "the prices of these precon are too damn high" meme here
The best new commander cards from commander masters are the proxies I’m making
Hah!
Mtg.print for the win
What a boss!
Just came here to say the same thing
based
Hi Professor, just want to say thanks for all the videos and all you do for the MTG community!
My pleasure!
I personally am extremely excited for Ugin’s Mastery. Face-down card support is few and far between. Mastery being colorless means it can go into any deck that wants it, and _every_ morph deck wants it.
I'm not a huge morph fan, but Rebell's rule 0 Izzet Ixidor/Akroma tech got me _suuuuuper_ interested in it, hahaha!
Maybe the best cards were the proxies we made along the way
As a brand new MTG player, this channel is such an incredible resource. Thank you for helping to inform (and fuel) my newfound obsession
This game was always too expensive and it’s only getting worse.
@@f.g.5967maybe keep that to yourself
Moment of silence for your wallet 😞 I’m sorry
F for respect
Don't buy cards for over five dollars, proxy the rest. That's my advice for you as someone who also just started recently
Don't forget, Descendant's Fury triggers off of a player getting dealt damage, as in, it triggers per player
really good w myriad
"I majored in poetry not pronounciation." I felt my eye twitch.
What a troll, amirite?
I'm really excited for the instant tribal draw. Glad to see they're trying to make tribal more viable
It always has been, but the staples for it can be difficult to find. It also depends on what creature type you are looking to build a deck with. Angels for example, will always be more frustrating than something like elves or goblins.
Tribal is very viable and moves a lot of product. Usually the most overpriced new cards for EDH are tribal cards (Ur-Dragon, Edgar, Kindred Dominance etc). I think the nicer thing about the new titan is its color. Green and Red and maybe White are the main tribal colors currently. Giving a new staple for blue gets me much more excited then the subpar green tribal card draw spell for example.
Tribal decks have always been good that's why there my go to
I tossed and turned on the sliver pre con but when I started compiling a custom list of slivers for a good deck to build on my own, only to find a sliver overlord and sliver hive already coming together at about 60$, almost half the price of the precon and still 98 cards to go, I just buckled down and committed to it. Comes out on my bday too, so why not.
I really appreciate your no nonsense approach to the game and your wisdom in the product. Very happy subscriber here and wish you all the best
I've got a list of singles i'm picking up. A lot of 20-25 dollar cards are now dropping withing 10-15 dollars and i am loving it.
Wait until the next set after this one releases, and then keep waiting. Everyone's attention will be on whatever the new hotness is and these cards will all drop. Just look at prices for the Warhammer singles, they were all crazy expensive on release, now the most expensive (Shadow in the Warp) is about $12.
@@EliyaSelhub I didn't know they dropped that far. I remember how much some of them were going for.
@@EliyaSelhubi just saw that!! The Golden Throne is 2 bucks!
@@EliyaSelhub Note that this also depends on how Wizards restocks the product and how much demand there is for it. The Warhammer decks were recently reprinted which is big reason why the price dropped. Currently doesn't seem like this set will be opened too much given the general outrage around it. Also in the past Masters products had quite limited print run if I am not mistaken.
If you wait too long the supply might be too low to get some of the staples. I will not risk waiting longer then Wilds of Eldraine prerelease personally and might pull the trigger earlier if the inventory of my LGS gets too low.
Everyone forgets about minotaur tribal 😢 when talking about red tribals.... I wish there were more minotaur cards. :(
Descendant's Fury feels like it was made SPECIFICALLY for Lathliss, Dragon Queen.
It's hilariously strong in Miirym too.
@@mikebott6940that was my thought as soon as I saw it.
I have a friend who uses lathliss a lot. She'll get value out of it.
@@rhysofsneezingdragon1758 I just realized how this is one of those cards that Izzet giants would get huge mileage out of.
Krenko saying hello!
I was really waiting for you to point out that edgar markov is not being reprinted in this set, when you mentioned him in the honourable mention
I'm most excited for the honorable mention you did. I have a black red minotaur tribal deck that generates minotaur tokens so being able to sacrifice those tokens to get minotaurs from my deck will be so fantastic I need the card to truly see the amount of pain it'll cause my opponents
That sounds super cool! do you have a deck list for it on hand?
So if you copy Jayas Phoenix a few times with a walker on the board, can you then trigger the copy ability a few times if they all connect?
Seems good.
I quite like Gatewatch Beacon, the white mana rock at 3 cmc with upside is pretty good. I like all the 3 cmc upside rocks but cursed mirror still feels the best.
My favorite part was the totally natural ad read. Great video Prof!
I love those, it's always so obvious...
RE: Descendant's Fury; It's one Creature PER PLAYER. When used with Sliver Gravemother's effect, any Encore'd slivers, for example, you can sac because they each attack different players, turning 3 tokens into 3 new slivers from the deck.
I think this makes it really good for any wide typal deck.
Hey professor! I love your channel and I hope you and the crew are all doing swell ^^ keep them videos goin!
13:44 "Whenever you CAST an enchantment". Composer of Springs will not draw you a card with any of these enchantress cards listed on the screen. I don't know how many Enchantresses are based off ETB, so I don't know if the strat is still viable or not.
This was very insightful--as always! Thank you
I like that the new card designs for pre-cons are more narrow and good in specific shells, instead of generic auto-includes.
I find Regal Sliver quite akward. Once the monarch is in play you often can get it without problem as slivers (given all the evasion slivers). That means it makes sense to get it and then play your slivers for the additional value. However this additional value is a temporary buff that you need to do pre-combat. Unless you are behind or want to attack a specific player this will result in one Regal Sliver trigger doing nothing every turn. Probably still worth the inclusion since it does a lot and can be great in the above described situations, but not that insane of a card IMO.
I think Guff Rewrites History will see a lot of play.
honestly almost all of the colorless new cards are bombs, the eldrazi have annihalator again!, the spells are crazy! honestly im surprised none of them where mentioned
Hey Professor, thanks for another awesome video. I love your style, so wholesome
Ive got some friends who play commander, and last week one of them was playing with a fully proxied deck. My other friend even commented that the proxy cards felt higher quality than official mtg cards.
Most are, unsurprisingly. I have yet to test the foils myself but from researching foil proxies are gorgeous.
I will be engaging with this set by using the sweet new arts for proxies. Big thanks to all the dedicated proxy makers out there who do all the hard work of formatting their cards.
Gatewatch beacon is actually nuts in any superfriends deck and especially for any Atraxa superfriends deck
If you don't want to spend $150 on the eldrazi precon, Amazon occasionally has them for $80 for about three minutes at a time. Randomly appearing, but I got myself one. Good luck!
PLEASE do a best new pauper cards from commander masters. That's one of my favorite parts of reprint sets: "what got downshifted?"
Can you do a video going through the down shifts and their impact? That would be awesome
Came here to say this. The Professor is such a pauper die-hard I was expecting him to go through the downshifts soon.
I feel like descendents fury could be interesting in a party deck as you could somewhat control what to hit due to the mix of creature types.
As a dragon player, Descendants' Fury is both self destructive and yet sounds so intriguing for a certain style of chaotic wondrous gameplay of battlefield triggers and damage on the stack and any response that ensues
Professor coming in clutch as always. I was hella excited for the Eldrazi & Anikthea pre-cons, but as soon as I saw the price I couldn't justify the increase.
As a quick note for Descendant's Fury, couldn't you sacrifice more than 1 if you did damage to multiple players with separate creatures?
Goro & Satoru read very similarly with the "a player" clause, but allow you to create one dragon token per player hit as long as you meet the previous conditions.
Worth noting, Descendants' Fury triggers on a per-player basis. If you hit three players, you pick one creature that hit each player and sacrifice them all to get three things.
Looking forward to pretty much all the new cards. Most of them look very playable, even the planeswalker ones if you don't have a really cut-throat group.
Thank you for the list. Myself? Loving Taunting Sliver.
Will definitely pick up for the ancestors to go in my Marwyn deck, other than that I think I'll just buy the occasional single as I need it. I was initially considering getting the sliver precon as I don't have a sliver deck yet but given the price you pay for the rather disappointing decklist, I'll just cobble a deck together by (you guessed it) buying singles in future.
Games Island in Europe lowered the deck set to 65 euro for each deck in the set. At that price point, I'm excited to pick them up :)
You craY
Ahh i thought you would like the helvault saga the most! Ah well. Great pics!!! Hope you enjoy them yourself prof!!!
Does Composer of Spring go infinate with Enchanted Evening? Or does Enchanted Evening only turn other cards into enchantments after the ETB trigger?
Lovely.
May your day be a good one, Prof!
Miirym, Sentinel Wyrm Deck will love decedents fury. Sac the token, get another bruiser and a token of it again.
Also might get composer of spring for my Ivy deck.
Surprised the Titan isn’t in this list though.
i like how you are editing the text of the cards now.
Prof. You're forgetting the wizards mojo "if you consider this is a expensive product, MAYBE THIS PRODUCT ISN'T FOR YOU"
You can also use Archaics ability for Isochron Scepters ETB ability! Cast two spells for two mana! And even copy the activated ability after
My Olivia, Crimson Bride deck loves Descendants’ Fury. It’s just too good.
I would love to see u play your kadena slinking sorcerer deck on an episode of shuffle up and play
I don't believe there is an agreed-upon term, but I would suggest the most elegant plural of "phoenix" is probably "phoenices," applying a pseudo-Latin suffix in a similar way to "index" and "indices"
Thanks Prof. I will buy some singles and one commander precon.
Descendants Fury sounds like a fun card where you can design an incredibly janky deck, maybe combined with Transmogrify, where you cast instant and sorcery spells and bring out tokens (Eldrazi, Elemental, Dinosaur, whatever) and only have extreme big creature cards in the deck (Emrakul, Omnath, Zacama). Maybe combine it with red card draw where you discard the big creatures and bring it to work
Decendant's fury works great for eldrazis! Sacrifice a spawn token, get a full Eldrazi.
I’m still new to magic and I think I may try to trade in in a commander deck, the sliver one. I heard some hate in it but I’m not sure how to upgrade it. I’ve never played a tribal is it hard to pick what slivers I want?
Very nice jacket, less flashy but still attractive due to the material, you are a great role model for magic and dressing well.
Yes plz pauper video! They downshifted my favorite rare from theros to uncommon making it a pauper commander legal!
Idk what the final price of these singles is going to shake out to be, but even the singles price are currently ridiculous. These are not staples or even close, some are good in very, very specific decks. Wish I cold build a Sliver deck that included the new ones, but both the precon and the singles prices are insane.
Will you make a pauper video? Lots of new card printed at common!
I agree
Can't wait for the eldraine set. Hope it will be well done and have a good price.
Bwahaha!
whats the best poetry for the background while opening packs?
Can you do a Sliver deck overview given all the new sliver cards? I want to play it for Commander.
I don’t know how many takes it took Prof, but you NAILED the “What’s Standard” bit. Perfect delivery. Still laughing!
That's a great tie!
The plural of "phoenix" is "phoenixes" or "phoenix" (pronounced the same but spelled differently). While "phoenixes" is the standard plural form, some dictionaries also accept the use of "phoenix" as both the singular and plural form. The word "phoenix" refers to a mythical bird that cyclically regenerates or is reborn from its own ashes.
The two new cards that are my favourite from the precons have to be:
- 'Rise of the Eldrazi' due to the fact that it's a massive flavour win for Eldrazi due to it having the three cast triggers of the original versions of the Eldrazi titans.
- 'Flayer of Loyalties' due to it being ungodly funny stealing someone's best creature and then punch them with it.
Abstruse Archaic with the annihilator triggers is going to be fun! Infinte Gyre, how about you sac 8?
As an Enchanted Evening player, I will definitely love Composer of Spring
I have been playing mtg since invasion. But, most recently ( 1 month ago ) got into commander. Can you do a budget friendly deck tech for elf tribal?
I’d love to see a video on the new pauper downshifts on the new video!
Has prof talked about how he took everyone's money off whatnot and never gave up all those collector boxes he has ?
Somethings that could also be cool to copy with arcaic:
Mimic vat
Lithoform Engine: first it lets you coppy anything now and also spells too
So this is super random and very off topic, but i've been wanting to change my clothing style for some time now but am kinda intimidated and not very skilled in picking outfits. what advice would you give to someone who is wanting a similar style to yours? i've been kinda interested in doing a semi suit and tie thing with the vest and such for a while but i dont know where/how to start, kind of a weird ask in a place like this i know but hey why not right?
For the ancestors is pretty nuts in elfball decks
Time for a Tolarian Community College hypothetical game. Complete this sentence: If one had the Professor as their Commander...
Listen, I'm just happy Rukarumel gets a card! And yes, I'm waiting to buy the single.
As of 2 days ago my LGS was doing preorders for all 4 commander decks for $360. Not selling individually, unfortunately
Descendants' Fury + Eomer, Marshal of Rohan + Blade of Selves with three opponents = infinite combats and pulls every human and/or knight out of your deck
I think I want that constellation card for Tom and lore of the rings. It is all looking juicy
12:27 What is that Avacyn art from?
The problem with planewalkers decks in Commander is that they are 1st to targeted as to avoid a player from popping and in 4 player games they are guaranteed to struggle with keep their planewalkers alive.
6:52 Prof: "Slivers, is there nothing they can't do?"
Me, an intellectual: "Isn't that a double negative, wouldn't it be better said as 'Slivers is there anything they can't do?'"
9:23 Prof: "Don't do the whole weren't you an English Major?"
Me, feeling targetted with that comment: "... I'm sorry Prof."
Umm, good video as always...
Ever since the prof started using Urza as a curse word in Shuffle Up and Play, I can’t hear him say it without thinking he’s swearing secretly.
“Urza’s saga? Prof, that’s so vulgar!”
"It'll be harder to find fodder [in a dragon deck] to sacrifice to Descendant's Fury."
Three words: Vrodiss's Dragon Grandpas
Jaya's Phoenix going straight into Dihada for me.
I'm engaging with this set by watching content creators like you, Vince, LRR, and AlphaInvestments. I'm in a tighter financial spot right now so I cannot afford any precons or packs. I'd love to get a Darksteel Monolith eventually for my Daretti deck though!
Vince has a CZcams channel?!
The new eldrazi Commander seems pretty interesting with Cascade, Cascade but I'm not sure how useful it'll really be
I went to a local legacynight yesterday and even there people were talking about how dumb the prices of the new commander masters precons are. I was actually expecting some really nice reprints. Like good manabases, Argothian enchantress in the enchantment deck, the expensive eldrazi titans, ect. But no. Its bad for the game that wizards keeps on pushing the prices while printing more and more products. Buying singles really is the best strategy :)
I've been trying to get into commander because my friends get together for it every couple of weeks.
I love you! ❤ Good job prof
New player here, been at it for almost 2 months. Idk why but as a former yugioh player I can’t help but appreciate the fact that rare cards are actually rare. Where as in yugioh pretty much everything is foil. I personally don’t mind paying for what I want to play with. Perhaps it’s because I don’t have more than 3 decks.
Glad you're here and that you're enjoying the game!
“I majored in poetry, NOT in Pro-Noun-See-A-Shun!” 😂😂❤❤ I love you, Prof
So i saw in Dr who spoilers there's a card that revrses your drawing to the bottom of the deck instead of on top. Cards like this ancestors gonna going to be wicked
I preordered the Slivers precon for $85 on Amazon...I couldn't find a better deal than that.
100 lands and a printer ! Buyer remorse free ! Guaranteed !
Seems like a good price, but in addition to the dollar price for the Slivers deck, it will cost you several friendships when you play it.
Linguistics majors are what people imagine English majors are. In a few years when you're old enough to audit classes at PSU I recommend a phonetics class, I had a great time in mine.
Best Magic the gatherning content online.
The new titan is also a powerhouse in any typal commander deck
Nice video as always!
but the math on "for the ancestors" doesnt check out. you'd need like 50 creatures of the same type to get a decent chance of a 3 mana - 2 for 1. If you got like 40 Sliver in your deck, the chance to draw only 1-0 is still about 25%.
I do not think it's worth to include this spell unless your deck concept is straight "that deck". or a different kind of spellslinger deck that can use this one more efficient.
I pre ordered the Eldrazi deck through Amazon while it was still 82 dollars so I'm pretty happy about that, its still expensive but I don't have anything colorless and I think it will be a good foundation to build off of.
I know people have been saying "oh, but it's not an ELDRAZI deck"...except that most eldrazi decks have less than 20 eldrazi in them and 5 of them are all the legal titans.
You can take that and do 10 in/10 out with the 4 missing titans and 6 other cards and you'll be cooking.
@@submortimer nobody should have reasonably expected them to put all the titans in the deck, im glad at least one is in there tho. Hyped to finally play some Eldrazi.
@@HighTechCinnamon exactly. The deck is honestly a good base for a colorless deck.
The first cards I would cut would be the zero toughness X-cost creatures like Hangarback Walker. Ordinarily a decent card but terrible in a cascade deck. There are lots of great homes for Hangarback but this isn't one of them.
(yes I know you can use them to start the cascade, but you're far more likely to cascade into them than to draw them)
