We could say consciousness is like a wave contacting the beach, awareness is the ocean. It's so easy to get lost in semantics, they often lead us away from the essential (to your point). In english, 'awareness' is the wrong word, we want a word that refers to the unconstructed, like: nirvana, anatta, god (tractable but problematic since it retains the constructed), brahman, moksha, life-force

This excellent explanation is an important adjunct for reading Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj, since he uses 'consciousness' and 'awareness' as separate concepts. Many contemporary nonduality teachers, like Rupert Spira and Mooji, use 'consciousness' as a synonym for 'awareness" (Atman).

Very good observation, you are correct. Sunny's explanation is more accurate. Maharaj was on another level.

Thank you for the clarity you bring to the topic of awareness and consciousness, Sunny! I am reminded of listening to Joseph Goldstein when I first started on this path. His first instruction of meditation, taught to him by his teacher, was to "Sit, and know you are sitting". After many years, I am beginning to recognize (experientially) that within this simple instruction is the very seed of awakening... It is a pointer which shifts attention away from objects and towards awareness itself. ~Be Happy!

Awareness is awakening, the center between the inner world and outer world. Thank you very much Sunny for your teachings. Namaste.

Allow me to add my grain of rice.
As the saying by Donald Rumsfeld goes: "There are known knowns. These are things we know that we know. There are known unknowns. That is to say, there are things that we know we don't know. But there are also unknown unknowns. There are things we don't know we don't know."
    There is awareness of consciousness.
There is a consciousness of awareness.
There is awareness of unconsciousness and consciousness of unawareness.
The first two are for a place we are in, whether we are aware or conscious of it or not.
The third , represents a place we are aware of its existence, but we have no ability or tools yet to either aware of it or be conscious of it.
The fourth represents a place that exists, but we have no awareness or consciousness about it yet.
It's quite similar to how we grow up.
The 5-year-old child may be able to imagine how he will look as a 7-year-old child, but he has no awareness or consciousness beyond that, and this despite the fact that, similar to pre-programmed navigation software, everything already exists and is predetermined, both the starting and ending points as well as all the points and stations in our life's journey already exist, but Awaiting our awareness and consciousness.

The question did include God also, consciousness emerged after separation from God, In heaven there is no thought but God, You ignored the main thing and that is God, Heaven is perfect oneness without awareness or consciousness, Love is one. not two, has no kinds, has no divergencies, no different ways or styles, love is one ❤ not two ❤❤God is. There is nothing but God or Love, no other principal, no opposite❤

This is really useful, thank you so much. I had often thought of consciousness as synonymous with awareness or much the same thing, but this explains it beautifully. I have on a few occasions in the past, had the experience, of waking up in the morning from, I think, a deep sleep, and just for a microsecond, there was the sense that I had been awake in some deep dark place, not dreaming, no images, but then it would be gone as I became conscious of being physically awake.

I see consciousness as awareness + body. In other words consciousness is awareness through the body. That's my own conceptualization of the difference.
In reality however all words are failed attempts to explain. Reality has nothing to do with words.

i like your definition. thank you. i dont really know and for me consciousness is the observer of the thoughts, behaviors, actions and such and for me the awareness is my eternal self. that quiet, steady non judging deep self. so still and encompassing. the only way i can explain it is incredible solid, stable, quietly powerful stillness. does that make sense? may we ALL be lifted!

So if awareness is "seeing", consciousness is the mechanism of seeing? Awareness is beyond consciousness? What is experience (subjective)?

Today I think I caught a glimpse of my true nature of pure awareness, although I could have just fallen asleep, idk. Either way, I just let my thoughts happen and then disappear, repeating that cycle constantly until I just stopped feeling anything. It felt like I was asleep whilst still being aware... And yet I didn't feel awareness. Thinking about it now, it is just indescribable and unfathomable after the experience was done. Maybe this was experiencing pure awareness, and my not understanding it is because it is beyond my mind?
When this happened, I was laying down in my bed and closing my eyes, and I had also just come home from school, so maybe it was just me falling asleep? I also didn't get the feeling that I was inquiring my self, since I wasn't thinking. I guess that's just a trick of the mind though?
