If Larry was around today, 2020, he would STILL be a HUGE star, and that is the measure of his talent. Like all the best entertainment, it's timeless. God bless you Larry, you are still so very loved and missed down here on planet Earth. There will never be another! XXX
Well Larry I went & sat by your graveside today lots of emotion ,it was worth the trip up from Norwich , i sat with you for around an hour , you were inspirational thankyou & I love you all 💖💖
On the greyest, rainiest and saddest of days, Larry never fails to make me smile and laugh. What a beautiful soul he was. From a grey day to a gay day indeed.
Growing up gay in the 70's was a bit of a trial!!! There were no positive gay role models. There was John Innman, Keneth Williams, Frankie Howerd - all legends in there own right. However I was unable to identify with any of them. And then came Larry Grayson - just as camp as those mentioned and most of his jokes were double-entendres - but there was something about Larry that was very different to the other 'camp' comics. Although never openly gay on TV (in his private life he was - a rare thing at the time) I felt I could relate to him in some way. Now I am not (and never have been) camp but Larry came across not just as camp but true to him self. Most of his jokes would not seem funny in todays climate - which is a pity. Unlike some comedians of the time, Larry came across as a really nice bloke who's jokes were not at the expense of others. Larry Grayson is imho a much underated performer.
He was a "stage Gay" in my view, at the time he was just called a " poof" , that was the terminology used in the 1970s, that was what he worked on being, inviting the audience to laugh at what a "smutty poof I am".... he presented the notion of making fun of Gays, laughing AT them rather than with them, with himself as the figurehead, I thought he was awful, he and John Inman and "Gloria" from " It Aint Half Hot Mum" , a program that cannot be broadcast anymore because of its racist jokes and Homophobic overtones, they were all the same, he was of his time, TV in the 1970s unashamedly made fun of minority groups but not in a nice way in my view, he was just smutty, .." I wouldn't bend over backwards for a meaty part?.."....." there were feathers everywhere, there must have been a cock fight.... I wish..." Just two examples of his comedy "genius". In the role of a "smutty poof" he succeeded , but he was far from funny in my view. I thought he did the Gay community a disservice , and Im not even Gay myself, but I look at him and I think , fucking hell!! is that how Gay people want to be seen or identify with??
My mum introduced me to the beautiful world of Larry Grayson... I’m hooked and in love with this beautiful man x sleep well fella... you deserve your own cloud with everard!
Lovely, camp humour that intended no offence, and has to be viewed in the context of the time, a well respected and well thought of man, and not a profanity in sight
Well said (2 years ago!) Larry was so talented, he didn't have to resort to swearing or crudity for easy laughs. He had funny bones, and was that rare creature, a star.
Those were the days when comedians told 'naughty' jokes that all the family could listen to and find something funny in them. Comic genius, with class!
Apart from how funny and brilliant Larry was in this video I have to say that the man who did the bolas stunt was incredible, such precision and accuracy, really skilful.
I'm 73 - gay - and think camp humour is OK; he is actually sending up men; Larry Grayson is actually gentle and laughs at himself and the cast obviously find his ad-libs comic - his open irony is accessible to everybody.
What a wonderfully funny, family entertainer he was. I remember watching him on the Generation Game when I was little. I adored him. Now I understand the innuendos, he’s even funnier. Love the way he says “I love you” at the end - said with such sincerity. We love you too and haven’t forgotten you Larry. RIP. Xx
Larry (Billy), total genius. A master of comedic timing; what a joy to see this episode from all those years ago. Thanks for sharing and in the meantime, 'Shut that Door!' Love and peace.
I was nine the last time i watched this.Brings back brilliant memories of sitting with my mam, watching the telly.Never got the humour then.Pissed myself laughing, watching now.
Absolutely, anyone who plied their trade in the environment at that time.had to be strong, and this guy was far more stronger than your average guy. R I P Larry G.
"You need some meat inside you." "It won't come up." (Pulls bra and skimpy nightie from his suitcase) (Pulls enormous candle from suitcase) (Pulls pornography from suitcase) Very clean. 🙄
“Has it ever struck you that life is all memory, except for the one present moment that goes by you so quick you hardly catch it going?”― Tennessee Williams..
@@jessiejames7492 I've never rated Julian Clary. I don't think he's talented at all, he just has self-belief that was instilled in him by having a private education. All his material is just innuendo and not very clever innuendo at that.
Honestly, I never heard of him. Then he was mentioned on a episode of "Vicar of Dibley". The Vicar said he wss hilarious so, I came lookin for him. She was right he is hilarious. Makes me wonder what else I'm missing. Wish Britbox would add some of the older British shows.
What a wonderful comic genius he was. Brave to be so openly gay even though it was hidden in double-entendres. He annoyed some gay people for being a stereotype but I think that was the only form of expressing sexuality that was accepted then when homophobia was widespread. Of all the camp comics of the 70's I think he was the best and had a down to earth and camp humour that still has me laughing today. A lovely and kind man who is sadly missed.
+Mike Hudson yeah. he was such a sport. he didnt feel he had to hide his campness. Because in the early days , once you came out publicly , a BBC exec said in an interview, that was the end of your career...
What complete and utter fabulousness! So hilarious, and Larry was such a great sport! The rugby skit made me cry with laughter.he could put his hand to anything.(if you know what I mean)!!!
Totally agree, Frank, such a gifted comic and entertainer. Check out another edition of The Larry Grayson show on here - the one with the whip and brilliant naval-themed closing number. My parents were at the recording of that one. God bless Larry, we won't see your like again
I put this clip on THE DADS ARMY FORUM and everyone enjoyed it....very funny.....William Pertwee was a regular on the show in case anyone is not familiar with DA. AnothER British gem and classic..
Don't get me wrong, pally. I mean no disrespect to the King of Cool (Dean Martin) I prefer Dean Martin to this guy any day. I simply meant that this was their interpretation of that kind of variety show.
"They have electricity in Ventnor don't they?" So clever. No need to over explain, or use profanity. He used the audience's own knack for innuendo to get the laugh.
They don't make 'em like that anymore... The fact is, God didn't just break the mold when he made LG... ' appen he absolutely smashed it to bits. Never be another one like Larry. He is, was, and always will be a national treasure.
This is the character he would play when out shopping , drinking , opening a fête around Nuneaton........Everyone loved him .........never a sign of a "star"
I knew friends of Everard's from the local Poly. One was named Tarquin, forgot the other's, but he was a Mama's boy whose needlework won awards whenever he showed them.
there are no comedians of this calibre anymore. clean and funny. nowadays they all shout in your face, act stupid and tell sickening jokes that arent funny at all
It wasn't until someone on Enders got a dog called Wellard that I got the Everard joke. I know timing is everything, but 25 years is pushing it. Nice devilsticking too

That was a lovely thing to do.

Larry Grayson is as brilliant today (2020) as when this was filmed. Truly one of the greats.

Fuck off Inman wasn't gay
Ding Dong so why did he marry his boyfriend

always find something new to laugh at with Lary such a kind man no hint of sarcasm parody or mockery just pure unadulterated humour
Oh Larry you are so missed x
What a dear man, and so funny. Laughed out loud at "I'm not going to bend over backwards for a meaty part." :)

kenneth page - jones top guy a funny face a smile and a camp walk very funny
He repeated the first joke on his first edition of The Generation Game.

Great comedy R.I.P. Larry Grayson gone but not forgotten.

Hilarious. We need more like this. Silly, non offensive humour.

The artist from Argentina was very impressive.
Larry was so funny sadly missed xxxxx
Genius. Still funny especially so in these 'I'm so offended' times.
People were so offended by homosexuality that Grayson would have been arrested for being openly gay a few years before this.
Larry Grayson, amazing timing, the look at the audience just at the right time.
I was nine the last time i watched this.Brings back brilliant memories of sitting with my mam, watching the telly.Never got the humour then.Pissed myself laughing, watching now.

"Everard, if you don't lift your bishop... You need some meat inside you." Pure filth. What a wonderful performer.
Always excellent, an amazing character
I can picture a young Julian Clary sitting in front of the box drinking all this in!
Julian took influence from Larry! In the programme 'What a Performance!' he details this; Larry Grayson and Sid Field.
no , julian clary is vulgar. love larry grayson. like the old comedians they always knew their limits on tv and in shows
Oh yes, Larry was such a huge talent, many young comics must have watched him and wished they were half as funny - or loved!

...thank you so much for taking me down memory lane, Larry was pure genius, definitely a comedy great, God bless him👌 🧸🌼
dear Larry .
“ Bend over backwards to get a meaty part “ ....... pure Larry Grayson and superb! 🤣
The airport sketch is my favourite, nobody can keep a straight face.
yes. it was p;riceless...i sent it to the dads army forum and the moderator put it on william pertwee's section. everyone loved it. hilarious

Such wonderful comedy. Today this type of thing wouldn't be acceptable now that the "fun" word has been removed from all of our lives.
He was fantastic. So missed. To think what's passes as comedy today? Thanks for posting. 🤣👍
Love Larry grayson as a kid and still.. Beautiful man.. Wish someone would do a documentary on him.

Yes , Dean was obviously the better singer . Larry the funnier guy......both of the same persuasion

The show is worth it's weight in gold for musical director Harry Rabinowitz's theme and the amazing sax counter melody heard from 25:25
Laz you were a one off genuis different class so so missed u your sadly missed
Loved the football sketch 😄
I knew friends of Everard's from the local Poly. One was named Tarquin, forgot the other's, but he was a Mama's boy whose needlework won awards whenever he showed them.
The coercive "Scottish" stagehand is played by 'Get Some In' star Nigel Pegram (Group Captain Ruark), who's actually South African!
All the sketches that Larry Grayson did with Bill Pertwee were an absolute scream
Very funny man. The Generation game was the only game show where the host was more glamorous than the hostess.
A real man of the people also.

A very funny man who had to wait for his fame but it was well worth it. What a star :)
