- When "Heavy Metal" the movie was released in 1981, there was also a music soundtrack containing songs by such artists as Cheap Trick, Sammy Hagar, Nazareth, Black Sabbath, Stevie Nicks, Blue Oyster Cult, Don Felder and DEVO. DEVO had 2 songs in the movie, but only one appeared on the
soundtrack, and it wasn't in the movie until the end credits were rolling. That song was "Working in a Coal Mine" but a more significant contribution was their song which played during the bar scene with Taarna the Tarrakian. "We're Through Being Cool" was not on the soundtrack. Here is my
humble production of the full length song with scenes from the movie. Please Enjoy, fans of DEVO.

The soundtrack and video availability of the Heavy Metal Movie are a lesson in licensing gone wrong. That movie was one of the most interesting animated movies of it's decade and yet it was very hard to see it because it was almost impossible to find.
When the movie was finally available to purchase, I drove half way across the city to the store that had it. My version was Beta Hi-Fi. I still have it, somewhere. Of course, have since gotten the DVD. Thanks for watching.

I swear, I didn't think we were ever going to see an official DVD release of that film, and I didn't waste anytime getting a copy when it came out.
I've got this dvd & the vhs copy of American Pop which to me makes a good double feature.
Agreed. GREAT film, and follows the spirit of the magazine with the short-story formats, all tied into a greater narrative. WELL done film.

So did I--I was 14. I'm still an HM magazine fan. This movie has stayed with me for so long. i was so thrilled to get it the first time on VHS I actually broke off a date with a girl I was nuts about. lol

I remember when I first found out that the bar band in Heavy Metal was actually singing another devo song and never knowing it was them.
I knew before hand because they were showcasing the film in Heavy Metal magazine itself.

Ralph didn't have to go too far to make these guys fit into the movie. I worked at a small TV station in the early 1980s. We copped the intro to "That's Good" for the news open.

The guitarist with the back unit and the white hair guy with the "organ", look the same--they actually look like the bar keep (probably he's their father). I'd love to write a story about The Band, traveling across the planet, evading pirates and giant bat creatures.

Pretty sure it was excluded since it was a track included on their studio album New Traditionalists. Weirder was Black Sabbath having a different version of Mob rules included on the soundtrack without the E5150 interlude.

How a song likes that got into the 1981 animated R-rated film, "Heavy Metal" based on the adult sci-fi fantasy comics magazine of the same name? Devo is pretty much not a heavy metal or a hard rock band.
Because the song fucking rules and sounds like nothing else in the movie and is perfect for the scene.
The same could be said for Open Arms by Journey, but the Heavy Metal soundtrack album is still one of the best soundtracks out there.
