Ginger Rogers was one of the most successful actresses of Hollywood’s Golden Age. After a breakout role on Broadway in the 1930 play Girl Crazy, she starred in a couple of successful Hollywood films before signing with RKO Pictures and becoming the on-screen dance partner of fellow legend Fred Astaire. Together, the two achieved a great deal of success. However, Ginger found even greater success after their partnership ended. In 1940, she tried her hand at drama, playing the titular role in Kitty Foyle. Thanks to her performance, the film became a massive success. She won the Academy Award for Best Actress, leading to her becoming one of the biggest stars of the 1940s.

Ginger had modest success in the 1950s. However, her time in the spotlight eventually came to an end. In 1965, she went back to Broadway with a starring role Hello, Dolly! Broadway welcomed her back, and her career was rejuvenated on the stage.
Ginger was married and divorced five separate times during the course of her career, and never had children. Her last marriage ended in 1969, after which time she decided to remain independent. In 1977, she hired a personal assistant named Roberta Olden. Having never had a daughter, Ginger began to see Roberta as her own makeshift child. The two shared a close relationship for 18 years, until Ginger’s death in 1995.
Recently, Roberta has come forward with some warm memories regarding her late mother figure. Despite having been a devout Republican and Christian Scientist, Ginger is seen by many as an inspirational figure in the feminist sphere. She took her career into her own hands and excelled independently in an entertainment industry that was largely dominated by men. Fred Astaire shared that she was the most talented partner that he had ever worked with. Join Facts Verse as Ginger Rogers’ former assistant reveals the truth about the Hollywood icon.

Her acting was sincere, personal, and as real as it gets. She was a very hard worker. I saw her in mid 1970's at the Beverly Hills Hotel. My father had a Ginger Rogers story: He lived in Los Angles with his Aunt and Uncle and their son that was about his age starting in the 1930ies. He went to and graduated from Eagle Rock High School in 1935 or 39 (I don't remember which). He told of the weekend he, his cousin and their friend had nothing to do BUT the friend said he knew of a big party going on somewhere in Beverly Hills. SO they all jumped into the friend's car and they went to find the party. Dad said after driving around for a while they pulled up in front of a big house with a lot of cars parked around it. They went in and were stunned by all the fancy dressed people and tables piled high with food that they saw. They stood in the house's foyer dumb struck until they heard a woman's voice ask from behind them, "Do you boys want something?" Dad and his group turned around to find the voice was Ginger Rogers! IT WAS HER HOUSE! Dad said Miss Rogers told her butler to give the boys a sandwich and soft drink and when they finished to escort them out. He and my mother lived in LA until he joined the army in the 40ies and had other stories of old Hollywood like like the night she danced with Gary Cooper at a night club.

This woman could sing, dance, comedy drama, she could do it all and do it magnificently. She was a triple threat, and I feel with her dramatic flair should have had a much longer career. But alas I think a lot of those Hollywood types who produced and directed movies considered hero a song and dance performer or simply regarded her as Astaire’s partner. But so glad we have those production she was in to remember her by!
