    Thanks for the video! Here's a question for you, since you touched on KDSS: if you were buying a new Toyota 4Runner would you spec it with or without KDSS for the following mission?
    1) Vehicle will serve as a daily driver for my wife (transporting our kids around), and as a road trip family vehicle. But, it will also routinely see 4x4 trail use here in Colorado and out in Utah.
    2) At the least the vehicle will end up being equipped with a front bumper and winch, and rock sliders.
    3) We're intending to improve the suspension over the existing Toyota TRD Off Road Premium stock suspension, but will likely keep ride height to no more than 2" of lift (again, it will also be a daily driver for my wife, and a highway vehicle on road trips).
    I'm intrigued by the idea of having additional off-road articulation with KDSS, along with having better on-road manners. But, others say that the system is limiting when installing aftermarket suspensions and/or lifts.

    Great video, thank you!
    First video I found with discussion around the difference between leveling options (e.g., with Bilstein 5100 in front and stock rear end) versus lifting with springs. Also I learned from you that the adjustable Bilstein 5100 can’t be used in / adjusted to, say, 3+ inch lift (thank you). Also appreciated the discussion around what heights can be supported by factory upper control arms and how the front coil over spring plays in relation to ride.
    I’d like to hear your thoughts on adjustable rear control arms (vs factory) - as in, if they make THAT much difference in rear alignment?
    Thanks for making the time to share!

      So the two ways you can lift your 4runner: 1. Spacers lift or 2. Suspension lift: 2a. strut or coilover over providing the lift or 2b. springs will provide you the lift.
      The 5100 would be the most 2.5", and the 6112 can do 3". We highly suggest anytime you lift your vehicle, upgrade the UCA. a 2" it's not needed, at 2.5" is highly recommended and for 3" or more you have to get one. This is all based on a 5th gen 4runner. Also, all 2.5 series and extended travel require an aftermarket UCA.
      You don't need a rear adjustable control arm unless you have a long travel or want some more fine-tune adjustment but the rear isn't required as much as the front when it comes to the control arm.

    I have a 2006 4runner and bought eibachs kit and it’s more like the 5100s. It’s different than the 2010 and up 4runner, with the v8 doesn’t seem like I’m getting the 3.4” lift it states I should get.

    • @ShockSurplus
      @ShockSurplus  Před rokem +1

      Eibach states their Stage 1 kits provides 2" at most for the V8. If you're running the 2.0 coilover, that's a 1.5-4" coilover based on a V6 but can be adapter to work on the V8.

      Pretty applicable here, the suspension design is the same 3rd-5th, just a change in weights. Anything specific we can answer?

  • @wilurbean

    235k on oem gx470 shocks with the variable dampers. They're not new feeling but work fine. The majority of slop in suspension at high mileage is due to bad bushings and ball joints.
    Over 2" lift requires so much more than UCAs. Also need LCAs, CVs that can handle the constant angle, larger bumps, track bar relocation, different sway bar links, etc etc and still it will put more unnecessary stress on big budget components like the transmission... all to get 1-1.5" more clearance.
    It's not surprising that the guys selling shocks would tell you to buy them 2-3× more often than necessary...jiffy lube says your oil lasts 3k miles. These guys also casually forgot to mention that aftermarket performance parts require much more frequent service and that most local shops won't have the expertise to rebuild shocks.

    • @ShockSurplus
      @ShockSurplus  Před 3 dny

      No, sorry you're wrong. You dont need new LCAs or CVs going to 2.5" of lift on the GX or 4Runner platforms. Dont need new sway bar links either, as there are drop brackets. We've seen thousands of vehicles get these kits across a bunch of different brands, and talk with all major manufacturers.

    Going for a bilstein 5100 3 inch lift kit for my 4runner, is there a certain UCA you recommend?

    • @ShockSurplus
      @ShockSurplus  Před 2 lety +1

      Any UCA will work and it's all personal preference. There are different material in which the UCA are made, various joint options, and then adjustment features. We do like SPC and Icon and run those are on our own setups.
