    I like your approach to this. It's really helpful. I ended up getting the Elka 2.5s with reservoirs (front & rear). I did use the Eibach springs for the rears and love their ease of adjustability. The Elkas allow for both low & high speed adjustments for dampening. This setup, the Elkas with the Eibach springs makes towing and the occasional indulgent trip to Costco a breeze! Thanks for what you do.

    Thank you for mentioning tinkerers video, it is one of the best 4runner suspension. I wasn't previously considering these before as I have experienced using the Bilstein kit on my truck and was planning to use them on my 4R eventually.... But being able to set the height, the rear reservoir having a bracket, and including the anti-rotation pin on the rear shock that the fox TRD pro has is a nice touch. A lot of other brands just let the hose keep the body of the shock from rotating

    Great video. I just installed the Eibach 2R-Truck, 2.0 coil overs and rear reservoir shocks that you installed on your four runner. I installed them on my 2009 Toyota Tacoma, 4-wheel drive. I need to replace all four tires and get them aligned, but the ride improvement is noticeable over the OEM shocks it replaced. My OEM rear shocks were cheap Bilsteins and the OEM ride was always harsh and unforgiving, even when the truck was new. The Eibach ride is "cushy" comparatively. It floats over rough roads, and I only feel bumps from large potholes or bridge expansion joints. I think the new tires will improve the ride even more. Even when I hit a pothole or expansion joint, the shocks cushion most of the blow to the wheels.
    I also need to re-torque the upper and lower control arms and I think that will slightly improve the ride. Also, getting the truck aligned should help the ride also.
    Overall, the ride is the best I have seen on a Tacoma. It's not a cushy Lexus ride, but then Tacomas are not Lexuses. I knew that Tacoma's steel frame structure would always have a truck-like ride when I bought it. However, with the Eibachs, over 95% of rough daily driving road bumps go away and the truck floats over them. This is exactly what I wanted.
    Couple this with the million-mile warranty on these shocks, the ease of installation, the ability to adjust the front ride height without taking the shocks off the truck, and the quality of the ride, and I doubt there is a better shock available at this price range, or even twice this price range. Also, you don't have to "rebuild" these shocks every 40,000 miles, which you do have to do with Fox and King shocks, and that would literally drive me crazy. These shocks should last 100,000 miles, which means they will easily pay for themselves compared to cheaper options.

    Finally got my Stage 1 installed and couldn’t be any happier. Thank you for all of the precious responses. Regarding the Eibach rear bump stops. When you centered the mounting plate, did you notice any issues with the actual bump stop not hitting centered on the axle? Centered the plate during install and it seems like the bump stop is hitting only the front of the axle. Figured I could just move the mounting plate further to the rear but wasn’t sure if this has been an issue?

    Face on your review last year I ended up going with the Eibach non-reservoir kit. Initially I wanted to get some RRW rims, but importing them from the US was just too expensive. Because I prefer the black look on my 2022 Trd off-road, ended up getting the TRD Pro wheels. With those either putting on Toyo tires AT3 285/70 in a C load. At full flex, no, rubbing in the back, and only had a little bit of rubbing in the front to which I trimmed the inner fender well at the front. Although I am happy with the set up, I do want a little bit more lift in the rear, so I retain rake closer to stock. I currently have the Sherpa full roof rack with Westcott Designs ladder, and some steel skid plates with front aluminum skid plate.

    Related to 5G4R: 275/70/17s that are true to their actual mounted/installed diameter most will clear on a 2.5-3" lift and if they do rub it's usually only at full lock while in reverse. However, there is overwhelming feedback reported and I've experienced this myself, Falken ATs and MTs tend to rub where many others do not to the point you may need to trim and or push back the front fender liners. Many of Falkens aggressive truck tire offerings measure slightly taller or wider or both.

    quick question, for the bilstein 5160, can the reservoir be mounted/bundled to the shock body instead of the frame? I used that two-hole/8 shaped black brace for my F150, but for 4runners, they seem to sell the frame-mount kit?

    Love the shoutout to Tinkerer’s Adventure. That’s such a great channel.
    Please put bigger tires on your 4Runner. 255/80R17 are true 33s, weigh less than 285s and will rub less than 285s due to the narrower width. Pizza cutters for the win!!! Plus it’s what I have in my vehicle and I’m trying to decide what to go with to lift it. A video of yours would REALLY help.

    • @JasonExplainsThings
      @JasonExplainsThings  Před rokem +2

      Yeah I'm like going to go your suggested route or 275/70/17. I'm leaning towards 275 Falken Wildpeak AT3W. It's pretty important to me to have a C load tire instead of E load. C load performs better in the snow and sand... and is better on road as well (because the 4Runner doesn't weigh that much). Also if I go with 275 (32.4" tire) my speedometer won't be off by much. With my Tacoma I'll likely go the 33" route, but that will require re-gearing and clearance work. But we'll see. I appreciate your advice!

    • @thejdshipley
      @thejdshipley Před 11 měsíci +1

      @@JasonExplainsThings Interesting…I’ve got FW AT3W 255/80/17s on my 4R. Just checked the stats on their 275/70/17 load range C. That one’s 5lb heavier than my size. I can’t speak to snow and sand performance. Are you saying that the better road performance due to the 4R not weighing much is because the tire is heavier? Just curious.
      As far as trimming, I’ve only had minimal trimming of the front bumper in the well. Haven’t tested this at full bump/lock yet. Also no lift yet either. I would still expect very little trimming based on what I’ve seen from the Tinkerer’s Adventure videos.
      Also, while I do plan to regear my 4R now that I’ve got 33s, I will say that it’s not exactly necessary if someone would rather not do it. My 4R still has plenty of get up and go, although I’m in Houston so the hilliest terrain I encounter is an interstate overpass. At 75mph, I’m only 3 mph off. I just set it at 72mph and it moves fine. Very little gear hunting.

    I run 285s on my stock 21 TRD OR with minimal rub to the mud flap, I’m sure this lift you can run it with no rub. Personally the 265s are tiny specially when lifted

      Spoilers for a video later this week (editing it right now). I went with 275s on new AEV wheels. I did have some rubbing in 2 spots... the front corner of the bumper and the mud flap. I needed to do a very minor trim on the bumper and pushed the wheel liner in to match. Now there's no rubbing there. It still has a very minor rub on the mud flap. It's so small and rare I will likely just leave it that way... maybe try the heat gun trick and see if I can eliminate it entirely.

    What's a good resource to learn about lifts in general? I'm picking up my first 4Runner tomorrow and I want to get it lifted at some point. It has KDSS, and I'm going to be using it for overlanding but not crazy rock crawling, so I don't need anything too crazy. I'm thinking about a 2" lift, but when I search for 2" lift kits for a 4Runner there is an insane amount of types, options, prices, etc.

    • @JasonExplainsThings
      @JasonExplainsThings  Před 4 měsíci

      I highly recommend the YT channel "Tinkerer's Adventure." He has videos on KDSS and the benefits/compromises between different lifts. I'll link to one of his videos at the end of this response. I would say the Eibach setup I chose is a happy medium and I've been very pleased. You could save some money and go with Bilstein 5100's front and rear. The Eibach setup is easier to install yourself and has adjust-ability. czcams.com/video/fSMWw6PQVRM/video.html

    Lifting became very popular here in the US, but I'm not even sure why is it necessary. It seems to me, that unless you're doing some serious rock crawling, for the average overlander it's a waste of money. To be convinced, all you have to do is watch some old video of Land Rover Camel Trophy from the 80s and 90s. Not of those were lifted or had bigger tires. They a huge challenges along those trips and did just fine.

    • @JasonExplainsThings
      @JasonExplainsThings  Před 11 měsíci +2

      I’d say it’s all about what you want to do. A stock 4Runner is a very capable vehicle. Probably the only must is a good set of AT tires, and maybe upgrading a skid plate or 2.

  • @InGratitudeIam
    @InGratitudeIam Před rokem +3

    Wheels & Tires? I'm thinking of going the "pizza cutter" route. Yes, 275s will fit on my 4Runner without mods, but that's not worth the cost for the slight change in height. But with 255 80 17s, you end up with 33" tires that outperform 285s on slippery terrain. Also, because of the narrow width, you avoid the BMC and other dreaded wheel well mods. In fact, on the TRD Pro wheels, that +4 offset helps to avoid scrubbing. Go figure. It's as if the engineers knew what they were doing.

    • @52hydra

      So you're saying I can slap 255 80 17s on stock wheels and suspension on a 23 ORP?

    • @JasonExplainsThings
      @JasonExplainsThings  Před rokem +1

      I get that with the 255/80/17s. I'm leaning towards 275s so the speedometer is still accurate and we don't take a large performance dip. For my Tacoma I'll likely go with 285/70/17s along with re-gearing and a tune.

      @@JasonExplainsThings I have a 21 OR & initially had Falken ATW in stock size 265. After I lifted 2in front/rear I put lighter aftermarket wheels weighing 21.2lbs(stock wheels ~25 lbs), having a "0" offset & went with 275 Firestone Destination XTs which were the lightest E-rated in that size also having 3-peak mountain snowflake rating. These also weigh less than C-rated ATWs in the same size. I only had slight rubbing at full lock & articulating which was remedied w/ pushing the fender forward. Didn't really need to, but did anyway. Hope this helps.

    Does it reduce or eliminate the crazy nose dive they put these out with? Seems wreckless for Toyota to sell these with how bad they nose dive when you hit the brakes even mediumish. My stock one is very squirrelly in my wife's words. I agree. It feels solid otherwise like on bumps, but safe max speed in any cross winds or gusts is about 60mph or Usually less! 60mph is pushing safety. It will just swerve and head to the ditch when a gust hits it in the side! Not safe feeling at all if its windy. Otherwise no issues with handling or freeway speeds. Steering is tight etc. No ball joint, Tie rod, or wheel bearing issues. Had it Aligned. Its all because if the springy stock suspension i think. Mine is a 16 SR 5 Premium. Bone stock. Think this suspension set up would help or eliminate the nose dive and squirrely handling in the wind? Ive been considering the Bilstein 5100 because of rheir lower cost and gokd reviews but these that you are using have great reviews too. Love your videos btw! Learning alot about my new to me 4runner

    • @JasonExplainsThings
      @JasonExplainsThings  Před rokem +2

      I'll say that nose dive is much less. I had the winch bumper on there on stock suspension for a short time, and the nose dive was especially bad. I don't think the stock suspension is terrible. Since its a 2016 your shocks may be wearing out causing this to bother you more. But yes the Eibach suspension is firmer, does improve the on road experience, and reduces nose dive. But it won't become a VW GTI or anything. It's still a body on frame SUV.

I think it was you but I've watched so many 4 Runner channels who knows. Lol. Once I get the funds to do all this and not end up divorced we will see if it helps.
