Being a backup quarterback in the NFL isn’t so bad. You make six or seven figures a year to basically hold a clipboard. And if you have to fill in for the starter, nobody really expects you to do much of anything. No pressure.
But some NFL quarterbacks became memorable or even legendary after going from benchwarmer to starter. I’m DMike Cantalupo, and today we present the 10 best performances from a backup Quarterback!
SIDE NOTE: For this list, we didn’t include guys like Kurt Warner in 1999 or Tom Brady in 2001, who became full-time starters through the season. We are basing our list off of backups who ONLY filled in for a very brief time during one specific season.

I understand the game in which Foles played was more significant (and recent, which I think is why it was given more weight), but since this was a video about back-up QB performances, I'd of given the number one spot to Flynn. Its beyond an amazing performance to set 2 major stat records on a team that has been around since the founding of the professional sport of football.
Happy to hear counter arguments, but when looking at individual performances, it will be hard to find many as good as Flynn's..even from starters.

About 20 years before Jason Garrett's Thanksgiving Day performance, the Cowboys got another decent one from a backup on that holiday. Remember Clint Longley? Neither does almost everyone else. But those of us who were Redskins fans watching that game in 1974 haven't forgotten.

Ben Roethlisburger should have been on this list. He was a backup for Tommy Maddox and when he got injured Ben was put into the game and then became a phenomenal QB.

Do a video about teams that lost their starting QB at some point in the season, but still went on to win the Super Bowl. You'd be surprised at how many there are. Backup QBs are more important than most people think.
Actually, Matt Cassell was more impressive filling in for Tom Terrific when he tore up his knee than Jimmy G. was during TB's suspension. Cassell won 11 games for the Pats which any other year would have been good enough to make the playoffs. Here's hoping Jimmy G. has a better post Pats career than Cassell did.

Drew Daniel at some point Vick got healthy but Foles was on MVP level so they named him the starter

And if you want one of the best backups ever, and to stick with my beloved Dolphins, how about Earl Morrall, a 38 year old backup QB, who came in to the fifth game of the season when Bob Griese was knocked out with an injury and led the team to a win that day and for all the rest of the regular season and most of the playoffs. In 1972. The Dolphins perfect season. Yup, the backup was the QB who did more than the HoF starter to complete that perfect season. #1 backup for all time in my mind. Though right now Foles is a close second.
