You're right, that 48 hrs after they become free swimmers is the difference between 100+ fry or only 10 surviving, love the videos you do.

Love your videos and the information, one thing I picked up from another Ram breeder is that most mature rams will want to spawn about 14 days after the wrigglers turn into free swimming fry an if you don’t pull the fry after those 14 days the parents will most likely eat the fry so that they can safely spawn again. I’ve only had the luck of breeding Bolivian rams regularly so far but have a pair of German blues that have ate their eggs 2 times so far but are still pretty young. Again I love all the information you give I’m hoping to build my own fish room in the near future

The Siamese algae eater gets super bullish only at feed time, otherwise he hides is this behaviour ok with my rams? Also I live on the Sunshine Coast and the tap waters sitting at around 7.6 ish I e put Indian almond leaves in and it’s helped a bit but I can’t even get it down to 7! What can I do? I would like to try and breed the rams. Thank for any advice.😊

  • @rev.dr.heatherm.ruggiwi

So glad I came across your video, just in time!! I read Chichilids like a pH of 8.2-8.4 and my tank was at 7.0, so I have been bringing it up (now at 8.0). Have the temp 74 and they have laid eggs twice, however they end up eating them. I worried the tank is too busy for them to keep the eggs with them (2 corys, 1 bristlenose pleco, 3 black skirt tetras with my mating pair). First batch was small, second batch was decent and I see today they are doing the chasing and rock cleaning routine. So I learned from your video to pull the eggs and establish in breeding tank and you use tap water. I am on a well with high iron in the water…is that going to be safe vs the conditioned aquarium water? Any other pointers you suggest? Thank you 🙏🏻

To increase the chance of good eggs add a few preboiled catappa (Indian Almond Leaves) into the tank to add beneficial tanins, which help prevent fungus, and have anti parasite, anti septic, antibad bacterial, and anti viral properties for both fish and eggs. They also give surface area for infusoria to grow which is an ideal first food for all fry. The leaves also help buffer both the pH, and the GH/KH into the parameters you want, slightly acidic, and low in TDS.

Need a little help, I bought two gold rams about 2 months ago, with no intention of trying to breed them, they were intended as center pieces in my 20 long. Welp, I woke up this morning to a pile of eggs on a crypt leaf. Will females only lay eggs in the presence of a male? Or will they lay eggs regardless? One is ferociously defending the area, only allowing the other ram to get close to the eggs. This was honestly the last thing I expected to see this morning when I turned the lights on, and I'm at a complete loss of what to do, or if the eggs are even viable. Any words of advice would be greatly appreciated.

Maybe play around more with youre lights. Use a automated dimmer so you can create more natural sunlight. Let the light go out in a time of one or two hours. To extent the time it became completley dark. Maybe they take more time in laying egggs, because the light is dimmer, They use this for breeding birds.
