Bergkamp’s best ability isn’t his understanding of space, which he’s a master in, but his ability to kill a moving ball dead at his feet. Absolute gold of a first touch.

Dabizas said in an interview that he was not humiliated by the goal but was happy that he was a part of something special. That was how great the move was.
Very hard to do. Bergkamp simply had incredible peripheral vision along with a sense and feel for the space around him. That's why he could dribble and manipulate the ball so effortlessly without looking at it. I'm not sure whether this is something you can learn or just something you're born with.
Bergkamp was such an magician with the ball, kids these days just thinks he’s an random footballer but he was pure entertainment when you saw him at his best. He was even one of the Baloon D Or favorites sometimes
T Henry in an interview said D Bergkamp is the best player he played with. That shows how good Bergkamp is. Henry has played with some of the best players in football including messi, Ronaldinho, Eto'o, xavi, ineasta, puyol etc. Yet he chose Bergkamp. 🔥
Just because Henry said it doesn't mean he genuinely believed it. It's called exaggeration and flattery. Henry is an Arsenal man through and through so it's no surprise he names his great strike partner from the club. From a period of time and setting where Henry was at his absolute prime. Bergkamp had more influence on his personal career than Zidane or Ronaldinho. And even though I think Bergkamp is an absolute genius, for me he's not quite Ronaldinho or Zidane level. Though definitely close. Zidane and R10 were simply unplayable when they were playing at the top of their game.
He 100% intended to move the ball the way he did the moment he saw Pires’ pass coming towards him. It has everything to do with instinct and intuition. His subconscious had already calculated the energy (speed and spin) of the ball after it left Pires’ foot. The moment the ball touched Dennis’ foot, he knew exactly how the rest of the play would unfold. That’s why all his movement seems so purposeful and why it looked like he had all the time in the world to skilfully shove the ball passed the goalkeeper. Absolute brilliance!
@@looniaz Agreed! He had an awesome work ethic as well. There is a great anecdote from Robin v. Persie about secretly watching Dennis Bergkamp from far back as Dennis was doing a recovery training after coming back from an injury. Dennis was training alongside two players of Arsenal’s youth teams. They were doing simple passing drills for about 45 minutes. Robin said that Dennis didn’t make one single mistake. It was actually a breakthrough moment for Robin. If he wanted to be one of the greats - and not just rely on talent - he should adopt Dennis’ focus and work ethic. Which he did.
"The moment the ball touched Dennis’ foot, he knew exactly how the rest of the play would unfold" No he didn't, that's just not how football works, even for the greatest like this guy. He just summed up the situation beautifully and decided instinctively to "give it a go", and it worked. It's a matter of probabilities, he had no idea exactly how Dabizas would respond e.g. that he would take one step too far forward allowing Bergkamp to block him on the turn. He just had a hunch, the instinctive creativity even to attempt this and the skill to actually execute it. The "knowing" part comes from having been in a "back to the goal, on edge of the box with one defender" situation possibly thousands of times in his career before, most of which the defender did dispossess him or intercept the ball.
