The speed of thought, the touch to take the pace off of a fast ball and to cushion it, set it up with perfect backspin to sit perfectly for him to spin 180 degrees, blind and in the opposite direction, run onto and then open up the body to coolly slot it in is pure magic.

I watched a video of the Arsenal team of Bergkamp's era last week - a group of players were celebrating a goal and I was astonished at the names involved in the celebration; I'd forgotten what a brilliant group that was.... Bergkamp, Henry, Vieira, Pires, Campbell, Gilberto, Reyes, Cole, Lauren - that's more than a nucleus for a World Cup winning team! Such a huge amount of talent in that team.

The greatest two touches in football history, left foot spin, right foot goal, i was there up the other end with the rest of the Arsenal fans and none of us including me knew how he did what he did. Some so called expert pundits suggested at the time it was luck but now they all agree it was a defining moment of artistry in football. So glad i was there. Thank you Dennis for all the great memories, me and i am sure all Arsenal fans will never ever forget you.

I grew up with Bergkamp, I am an Ajax fan and i am Dutch. He was one of the greatest for us Dutch. The goal against Argentina on tthe WC in the US. That era of the Dutch should have earned a WC title. Bergkamp is also afraid of flying.
But he was the best creative player I have ever witnessed, the flegmatic moves, the intelligence, the beauty. And, like Cruyff, he made it look simple.

  • @notpoliticallycorrect1303

While most rave about Bergkamps's goal against Newcastle, his reception, retainment and lobbed delivery against Bayer Leverkusen in Feb 2002 Epitomises Denis's unrivalled mastery more so,his 1999 display at filbert street was sublime, especially the goal from the short corner, his collection in the WC from Frank De Boer's long ball to kill the Argies at 89 mins was pure magic(As an Englishman that one was particularly satisfying, given the opponent😁).,so many moments, so many magic touches. The only player ever that made me shed a tear upon his retirement. We were truly privileged.

This man was a genius with the ball. The touch of a maestro and so, so intelligent. He scored my favourite goal of all time against Argentina. The control, touch to take it away from the defender and then finally smash it beyond the keeper. Watching that live, he just did it all before your brain could compute what he'd done. And then you were just left flabbergasted.
Should also be pointed out, he was terrified of flying and this led to him missing many European nights with Arsenal. A tragedy for any football lover.
