His style of play was simplistic because he wasn't that pacey, his dribbling wasn't great and he rarely blasted the ball in the way players like Gerrard could. Bergkamp as a result made his game about delicate passing, close control to turn away from defenders and precise, close range finishing and intelligent lobs. Very unique and unselfish player who preferred to provide the assist than to score the goal himself despite playing as a striker most of the time. Better than Henry imo.

I had to come back and watch this again after seeing people talking about his goal on the Premier League goals of the Year video on the NBC Sports website (where they showed every goal that won Goal of the Year in every Premier League season).
Simply put: nearly all of us who were too young to remember him playing likely know him from seeing that legendary World Cup goal against Argentina. But this video makes it obvious that that goal was *no* accident!
As you can see from this video, he had perhaps the greatest first touch out of the air of *any* player in history, he was *incredible* at turning defenders, and he was *deadly* at finding that far post (even when there was seemingly *no angle at all* to do so), and he would often combine two or even all three of those skills at once *so regularly* that it was only a matter of time before that happened on the world's greatest stage!
Everyone should watch this video (and/or send it to their friends who likely have only seen that goal but probably don't know how that goal happened)! Definitely makes it much more incredible to watch that goal after realizing that it was the final payoff for an entire career of hard work and perfecting so many brilliant and unique skills!

So Dennis was master of the student teaching Henry basics of the first touch and being one with the ball. He taught him the concept of time in football, which gave Henry even more dominance on the pitch because of his lethal combination of pace control and speed. That goal at Wembley for Holland against England I was there, my dad took me and my mate from my football club, I was right at that end aswell at bottom tier. Remember everyone saying "what a goal" 😮. I was so pissed off after that game tho, even tho it ended 2-2 it felt like a loss. We were 2-0 up in first half, Barnes scored a blinding free kick in second minute, then Platt made it 2, then Berkamp scored that worldie in the second half, then Des Walker gave away a stupid penalty by pulling Overmars's shirt in the 85th minute, Van Vossen scored the penalty... GUTTED. Pure class from Berkamp though, what a goal.

@ gooner andre: You hardly see that DB goal often enough on YT. That’s a memory to cherish. I have a similar memory. I was in the stadium during the 1994 WC qualifying match Holland-England where Koeman had to retake the free kick and lobbed it over the wall of England players to score the 1-0.

He would always be looking for others and try to set them up.

In my memory: vs Stuttgart or Frankfurt. B. has deff. in his back and B. get the ball: he vollied him with right around deff. He goes left around deff. And pick up the ball behind the back of German Deff. Volleys him in goal: 2 time touch...!?? He played last years 20 min a game, still he scored most, almost everytime he got the 20 min. He clearly (not for NL football critics) the 2nd best NL player all time. JC was top5 max worlds best player all time...

@@RunFastWhiteKonijn the debate here in the Netherlands switches narrative by the second, Cruijf is generally considered the best Dutch player which I think is fair. This especially when you consider his coaching career as well. Dennis Bergkamp or Ruud Gullit are usually put on number 2/3… but since theyre qualities are so different it’s hard to judge

    Not bad....
Bergkamp has been described by Jan Mulder as having "the finest technique" of any Dutch international[6] and a "dream for a striker" by teammate Thierry Henry.[7] Bergkamp finished third twice in the FIFA World Player of the Year award and was selected by Pelé as one of the FIFA 100 greatest living players. In 2007, he was inducted into the English Football Hall of Fame, the first and so far only Dutch player ever to receive such honour. In 2017, Bergkamp's famous goal against Newcastle United was voted as the best Premier League goal of all-time in the league's 25-year history.
