From growing up in South London to the multiple unsuccessful trials and plans to give up playing, I signed my first professional contract with Crystal Palace a few months before my 22nd birthday. In 1991 I signed for Arsenal Football Club where I scored 185 goals in 288 appearances. I went on to play 581 league games, scoring 387 goals for seven clubs in England and Scotland, earning 33 caps for the English national team.
I am now fortunate enough to have a football broadcast career working for the BBC & ITV.
Some Career Achievements:
185 goals in 288 appearances for Arsenal (2nd all time leading goal scorer)
117 goals in 253 starts for Crystal Palace (leading post war goal scorer)
33 caps for England Menâs National Team
Premier League Winner (Arsenal): 97/98
Premier League Golden Boot (Arsenal): 91/92
FA Cup (Arsenal) : 92/93, 97/98
European Cup Winners' Cup (Arsenal): 93/94 #IanWright #Football #Arsenal - Sport
Dennis Bergkamp is one of the most under-rated player of all time. His vision and style was unique. Exceptional player. He has not received enough recognition in his career.
Ehsan Sabaghian heâs the original Ozil
He wasnât underrated by Arsenal fans, when he was playing he always made our worlds top ten best players ever
I think most arsenal fans calling him god is enough recognition....we have the memories
Ehsan Sabaghian he was fantastic, i hate Arsenal, but i always appreciated and respected Bergkamp
I donât think he was underrated at all, Iâm dont understand why you would say that.
Who else was watching this with a smile throughout the interview
When he spoke about scoring that first goal against Southampton and the Arsenal fans exploded and were happy not only for Arsenal but for him to have got his goal I realised the grin on my face was huge!
More like crying, mate..
I was smiling as wrighty was ringing the bell. Top top top top top player.
Me
High as a kite~
He named his grass âHighburyâ what a legend.
I wonder if he has actual grass from Highbury
â€
I think he was just joking with Wright, saying "keep off the grass.... that's Highbury"
It is a joke donât take things serious all the time
@@mannion7646 no he has the actual grass from Highbury
Dennis would be worth 200m in today's market. World class player and such a humble guy! Love him
So underrated. Pure magic on the pitch. He was soooooo good, and never got the credit. Defo top 5 of all players I've seen in my lifetime, without doubt.
He's not underrated. People know how great he was
When an introvert and extravert become friends. Love the video
Spot on! Couldnt have described them any better. Perhaps that why they get on so well, cos tbier energy/xter balance out.
I wonder if Dennis is still scared to fly on an airplane I'm at the start of the interview so doubt I will find out
I was thinking that!
Spot on! Like a penis & vagina.

Why was he lazy?
Dennis enabled Ian and then Thierry to be Arsenal's top goalscorer
Agreed, he was the perfect foil for your main finisher. Teddy Sheringham used to fill the same roll at Spurs. He is every striker's dream partner.
Exactly. It is no coincidence that Arsenal's two greatest goalscorers both played with him, obviously both exceptional strikers but he provided them with so much freedom.
Thats very true
Towards the end of his career, he even fed the other strikers... like reyes as well
Heâs a very grounded person and player, thatâs why he never travels by plane......

I require a series where Wrighty goes and talks to all the Arsenal legends that he can contact, ending with an interview with Wenger himself
Yes, this would be awesome.
Would be such a good series, especially if he can do one with Mr Dein
Yes, couldnât agree - would be a great series. Really hope Wrighty seeâs this and sorts it
Yup. That would be great. All the players he played with anyway.
Brilliant idea, it would be fantastic they were a superb team great to watch, and tough, not just the team, the whole squad were top notch, Denis was world class
The goal he score in 98' against Argentina is still one of the most amazing three touches I have ever seen.
Surely the three vs Newcastle? =)
@@netweed09 I think doing it at a world Cup event takes some beating. Though I do acknowledge the Newcastle goals were tasty too.
@@davidwatson1912 Oh yes sure sorry the goal vs Argentina was ridiculous in every way, plus typical Sir Dennis with it being the Winning goal đ
@@netweed09 the 1st touch against Argentina was athletic genius to coral a slightly over hit pass. The 1st touch against Newcastle was a bit sloppy (As was the pass). Everything after the 1st touch was Denis's genius like football brain reacting to the situation. At that time no one else on the planet scores either goal.
There one he missed against Brazil, epic
Dennis "The Iceman" Bergkamp. Chelsea fan here, absolutely loved him, got two of his shirts.
JT , you're a lucky man !
Anyone who loves football would love Bergkamp, regardless of which team you supported. He played with such grace and composure it was a joy to watch.
???
So, you sold your soul like everyone else in 2005. Nah geedout!
Best all round player ive ever seen in an Arsenal Shirt mate so glad you can admit how good he was.
likewise! it's just poetry the way he played.
couldn't help smiling like an idiot when dennis opened the door

Warmly smiling while reading thisđ
I thought Bergy was going to snog Wrighty for a second. đ
One of the most wonderfully gifted footballers of his generation. The goat touch đ
We wouldâve won multiple UCLâs if only he could travel to away games. I never saw him play coz I only started watching football in 2008 but my dad tells me he is the best player ever to play for arsenal. Not Henry, but Bergkamp simply because nobody could do the things he could do not then not now not ever.
Any generation
To be fair, Diego had the best touch. And then theres DB10, Zidane, Ronaldinho etc.
M R db10??? Whoâs that. Anyways nah Bergkamp has the best touch, what he lacked in pace he made up for with his touch, technique and vision. Of course itâs debatable between him and zidane for who had the best touch. Ronaldinho obviously was amazing but wasnât known for his touch per say he was more of a dribbler.
@@riyadinho6795 Your dad is right. Watch his 'Goals Highlight reel'. Then, when you have finally finished (Cos he only scored great ones)...........Then watch his 'Assists highlights'. Equally as lengthy and perhaps more breathtaking. only Messi can come close
Propably the only time anyone has made Dennis Bergkamp talk for so long and actually expressing himself publicly and we got you to thank for that. Ian man you're the only who could that, thanks.
âDo you love me man?â

Iâm a Liverpool fan, but Dennis Bergkamp is my all time, non Liverpool, Premier League player of all time. Technically, just amazing. Pure class.
Yeah, would have loved him at Liverpool. Brilliant player.
He would have been wasted with us in the 90s. His level of professionalism was a level above anyone at Liverpool at the time.
He'd have been great under Houllier though
@@gomey70 That wouldn't have worked out for him back then Liverpool weren't that good at that time
He had a nasty side. He took it but could give it back. Top player
Jack Richardson dunno what Houllier wouldâve got out of him mate. GH preferred a big lump like Heskey alongside a quick player. đđ€·đ»ââïž
Dennis Bergkamp is the greatest Arsenal player of all time. One quote from Ian Wright that Iâve always loved: âDennis Bergkamp is the greatest signing Arsenal have ever made and will ever make.â â€ïžâ€ïž
ismail adam nah Bergkamp changed the whole philosophy at the club. Well him and wenger but him first. He added flair to our team that we never had. We was like an advanced level Burnley style team before he came. Without his transfer the other amazing players would never have followed simply because Bergkamp was a player everyone wanted to play with. He is legendary and could do things with the ball that most couldnât even imagine of doing
Would have to agree from a pure footballing sense Dennis was a genius.
@TheGooners11 Please don't mention him in this sacred place.
@ismail adam If Bergkamp did not come, Neither would have Henry.
@ismail adam I can tell you're probably mid to late 20's, only know Wenger's Arsenal, and know f**k all about anything before that. First off, heard of Marc Overmars and Robin van Persie? That Invincible team was very good, but I'd still take the 98' team over them. And even ex Man Utd players have said, that Arsenal team was the best they'd come up against (And unlike the invincible team, they actually beat Man Utd, not once, but twice). Bergkamp was the start of the revival at Arsenal, believe me, he was a mega signing at the time, Arsenal fans could not believe their luck, especially because the season before his arrival we finished 12th in the league and looked like we were going backwards. Arsenal had the basis of a good team before Wenger took over, he just added the right pieces to the puzzle.
Dennis was the hero of my childhood. Still remember his goal against Argentina in 1998âŠMissed that time when players like this guy played.
The goal against newcastle was for me
The gole that safe my life from getting kill Dennis is my hero
I dont think I have heard my father scream in delight so much for a goal like Bergkamps against Argentina. He was so happy.
Thierry Henry picked Bergkamp as the best player he played with, and he also played with Messi, of course.
Iâm a Crystal Palace fan and you could not help but be in total awe of Dennis Bergkamp... He was mentally miles ahead of everyone else with his football brain... an unbelievable player and without doubt one of the best players to grace The Premiership.
I feel so blessed that I was a teenager in their era. I'm 40 now and feel so emotional watching this. Dennis was and will always be my favourite ever footballer. And my love for wrighty goes back further. Tears of happiness watching this
Same mate, same. What a great time to be a Gunner not a Gooner a GUNNER!
Same here I'm 39. Was ecstatic when I found out that we signed Bergkamp from reading Kick Off magazine. He was my fav Dutch player at that time.
32. Started watching football around 98 and this man was a magician. He had a technique and dribbling skills compared to Zidane. But I believe he was even better.
Real talk. What Denis said about intensity on the training pitch (28min) Is something lacking today not just in Arsenal but many teams. These two are legends for life.
Same here, I'm 31 so i was only 7 or 8 when he joined us, this is the only time ever i wish i was a tiny bit older to see more of this unbelievable player, I started training with Luton Town youth and one of the coaches used to call me Bergkamp, I thought it was cause i played like him but found out a couple years later it was because i looked like him :/ lol
Dennis Bergkamp, the man that made me an Arsenal fan đ„đ„đ„đ„đŽâȘ

@@scorpiusnine8317 No to me, I wanted to watch Dennis Bergkamp! and that's why I started watching Arsenal, then arrived Wenger, Henry and I was in love in a heartbeat.... but Bergkamp was the reason!
For me, it was Marc Overmars because he was my idol when he went from Ajax to Arsenal and I was just too young to see Bergkamp on Dutch TV each week. Apart from seeing him in the Dutch squad
Legends. I miss these old players. I remembered how Arsenal beautiful play. Smooth and quick.
From a Liverpool fan
Same bro. Chelsea fan here but these guys seemed like the first generation of players that where making âbigâ money but still had old school grit and dedication to training. Plus there was no social media so we didnât really get an insight to their personal life. Just on pitch glory & heartache đ
That had total football with a touch of French flair nailed down
Ian Wright you are a shining example for a young man like myself. A lesson in self swareness, humility, learning from your mistakes and growing as a person... thank you sir. Much love from NYC
The chemistry between them is hilarious, Wrighty is like that small kid in school that breaks things in the science lab, Dennis is like the nerd with the key that let him in
Mo Talks they could make a film together and i would watch it, brilliant balance between the duo.
Canât believe that whenever pundits talk about the best foreign PL eleven or something that they often ignore this man, he is by far the most skillful and elegant player the PL has ever seen, Cantona was not even half as skillful and majestic, Cantonaâs impact in the historical narrative of English football is huge no doubt about that but as a pure footballer, he was nowhere near as good as Dennis and I say this as a Man City Fan
AGREE...no one comes close to this elegant gentleman of an artist...Cantona?! why not compare Ibra then?
@Man from the Orient
Don't you mean you CAN'T say this as a ManCity fan? Lol...who do you prefer, ManUtd or Arsenal. If it's the latter there's no surprises why you'd say that.
CD DB Iâm not a troll or fanboy or whatever and I give credit where itâs due, I rate many United players very highly but you really think itâs impossible for a neutral to rate Bergkamp as a better player than Cantona? Did you know that Bergkamp finished runner up for the FIFA world player of the year once? Cantona was not even close to being nominated which shows how brilliant Dennis was. I watched them both and Cantona was amazing but Dennis had a touch, control, skill and elegance that is unmatched, an absolute magician
FEINSTEIN KUSHNER Typical United fans, super biased and always crying when someone doesnât rate a united player as the best ever LOL
Iâm French and i support Chelsea btw so does that make me a noisy neighbor of United as well?? đ€Šđ»ââïž
You donât have to be a City, Liverpool or Arsenal fan to see the obvious fact that Dennis was a far better player than Eric
d obianuli Hahahaha, United fans crying so much đđđđ You know what? I support my local team of Malmö in Sweden but I wouldnât hesitate to pick Bergkamp if I had to pick between Bergkamp and Eric Cantona simply because Dennis Bergkamp was absolutely world class in every aspect of the game
I'm Liverpool through and through, we had/have some of the best foreign players in my 50 years, but Dennis is by far and away the finest foreign player to grace these shores. So calm, so talented, so understated, yet he has one of the top three goals in the Premiership and the best goal ever in the World Cup.
Dennis was just poetry in motion. I never tire of watching his goals. Interâs loss was our gain!
Absolutely loved how you put it.
âPoetry In Motionâ
The respect for David Dein is clear to see. Wrighty called him Mr Dein straight away.
When Dein left our club started to lose its identity.
For me Dennis Bergkamp is the closest thing I've seen to perfection.
Good point. A lot of people don't realise the impact that Dien had on the club and what a big loss it was when he left. I think it affected Wengers career big time.
Yeah when dein left you could see a change.
Bergkamp one of the most gifted players i've ever seen.
As I've being saying...he's part of the greatest of all time...
Yeah, he was so talented. His first touch was probably the best I've ever seen. The goal vs Argentina in 98 and the third goal of his hattrick vs Leicester are a masterclass in this art. Absolute QUALITY player.
mu5lim đđđ
Cantona better than Bergkamp? Are you on drugs? Not in the league
One of the most overrated. A chancer on the domestic circuit, and non-existent internationally.
Dennis might hold the Premiership record for the amount of times home fans would applaud a goal he scored against their team as normally it was a sublime piece of skill that you simply HAD to respect.
A true entertainer
The greatest player I ever saw. The guy was just from another planet.
I can't stop smiling, I feel like a 14 year old again. God I missed those daysđą
I was 10 at that time and arsenal exploits in 97/98 season is what made me love football, beautiful football to be exact

John Ewen May your brother rest in peace. God bless
âNormally it takes 5-6 months for a foreign player to adaptâ and we have players jumping on Pepe already, we know he has the potential to be world class for us, letâs give him time, trust the process and then we will watch him thrive.
Still took Dennis 7 games if your listening properly. If your good your good
People are jumping on Pepe because of Arsenal fans who get gassed too quickly and who love to banter other rival fans about their players new signings who flop in the 1st few weeks they have just joined the club
3 assists and a goal in 7/8 games ain't that bad
Slightly different level of player. Lol pepe no where near the class of Dennis
Makaisonn but look at the quality of player Denis had around him compared to Pepe
As a Toon fan, what an absolutely incredible player Bergkamp really was, he was every neutrals delight to watch, his ability, gracious movement and vision was off the charts. Late 90s and 2000s what a time to experience football.
iGF99 Gimby nie znajÄ
I would say all the 90 were a great time for football
iGF99for us Italians late 80âs and early 90âs were the best era as we dominated world football with only 3 foreigners aloud in the team trashing Madrid Barcellona Bayern
Luis Lizard Juve were such a joy to watch, Baggio, Alex, Ravanelli, Vialli, đźđč
It was the best time . Take me back please
If god asks me âwho is the most humble sportsman youâve ever witnessed?â I wonât even let him finish the question. Love you Dennis!
Am with you on dat point....dat Newcastle goal he scored in dat game is something to admire to the least of my life..as a gooner..what a player...his skills and vision
Dennis bergkamp was one of the best players I have ever watched live im a Newcastle fan and that goal he scored against us was sublime totally
Underrated
As was his goal in the same week against Leverkusen. But people forgot about that i think..
Not even an Arsenal fan but just a fan of the beautiful game & especially Mr Bergkampt. Thank you for the memories from my childhood of sublime skill & vision ahead of the time. That goal against Newcastle is still one of the greatest of all time, end of! Legend!
Dennis Bergkamp an absolute legend from a Liverpool fan .
I'm getting off my phone sacking my film on the tele and putting this on the tele instead. Get in!
Phill Sharpe literately did the same thing. Now on my phone while itâs on the telly just to check the comments! What a pair of legends. Genuinely love them both
@@BennettIsAmazing just finished watching. Oh man. I'm shook.
Phill Sharpe sent it to all my mates
@@BennettIsAmazing Still remember that goal against newcastle that was top top quality.
What a legend Dennis Bergkamp was, I had 3 posters in my room when I was a kid, Dennis Bergkamp, Ronaldo ( Brazil) and Andrea Pirlo. I don't think we will have a player with such class as Dennis Bergkamp. Ruud van Nistelrooy said in an interview that when he started playing football he was told by his manager at the time to watch Dennis Bergkamp videos.
Gotta love Ian Wright. I'm no Gooner, but I have the ultimate respect for Ian and how he approached the game. Even now, when I see him working as a pundit, I can see that he thinks like a supporter does, and that makes him really special to us all. Vastly underrated as a striker of his generation. And he was a lot better than he believed himself to be. For a while there in the 90s, he was unstoppable.
Dennis looks like a combo of Sting, Ed Harris and Tom Hanks
Laughed hard at this! Spot on.
I see all three of those in his face, itâs so true. đ
Spot on.
HAHAHA...PERFECT ! BERGKAMP BRILHANT PLAYER..đđđ
Also beavis and butthead
Find someone who looks at you like Ian looks at Dennis. LEGENDS!!
Iâm not even an Arsenal fan but I enjoyed this so much the first time around that Iâm going to watch it again and stick this in my favs!
First 20+mins video I have watched with no interruptions. I just love watching old teamates and good friends reunite, never fail to crack smile. Beautiful.
Iâm just a simple gooner, when I see 2 legends together Iâll just âlikeâ.
You're a good man, Charlie.
I am not a gooner but you'd have to be a bit of a knob to have a problem with Wrighty and Bergkamp. Wrighty just seems like a very warm person.
Yeah same m8... Just missed Mr arsenal.. Tony Adams.. A real legend
Iâm 55 years old, been lucky enough to have been a season ticket holder at the Arsenal with my poor old dad since 1970 (49 years ago), How brilliant was that chat between you two, you are: TWO LEGENDS - I love you both đ
Two absolute LEGENDS! Can't express enough the admiration I feel when I see them!
As a ManU fan I loved the rivalry between the 2 clubs. miss the 90s best football era IMO. Much respect for these 2 players. Great video.
