Melissa Clark is joy personified.
I love a Melissa Clark moment! A queen! Iconic!
When two people that came from different cultures and beliefs, yet mutually love hard and respect each other. Inspiration! Happy Hanukkah and Merry Christmas to your family! Xx
Hanukkah is a war victory celebration vs Greeks in 2nd century B.C. to get some temple back that the Jews eventually lost. It's really not important at all.
Hanukkah presented as an important Jewish holiday (which it isn't) to be set alongside and celebrated with Christmas is almost insulting to Christianity. Hanukkah is virtually a meaningless holiday in the Jewish calendar and it's not even in the Torah. Christmas and more so Easter are the two biggest holidays on the Christian calendar and Rush Hashanah and Yom Kippur are the two most important Jewish holidays. When Yom Kippur and Rush Hashanah are happening you hardly hear anyone mentioning them, they are largely done without much media attention. Then why the need to force a meaningless Jewish holiday like Hanukkah into the public vernacular with general greetings when Christmas is going on? It's almost like Hanukkah is used to crowd out Christmas.
Hanukkah was reimagined as a "religious" holiday so Jewish kids wouldn't feel left out when Christian kids were getting presents. It's not even a religious holiday.
@@u235u235u235 ok and Christmas is a "real religious" holiday? Jesus was not even born on Christmas. Christmas is based on a pagan holiday. Let people enjoy things
@@farihamahjabin9565 you missed the point. obviously both are fake and fantasy. I'm not arguing any of what you're saying.
I'm Catholic and so was my husband. We never opened presents until AFTER we went to Mass. And we had to be on a fast to receive Holy COmmunion so eating came at the tail end of opening up presents. So I developed our own eating tradition. I prepared a bacon and cheese quiche on the day before Christmas and kept it in the fridge overnight. On Christmas Day as we began to unwrap presents I would stick the quiche in the oven and set the timer and it was usually done by the time we had opened our presents. Everyone helped to set the table and we all sat down to eat. There was a lot of joking around the table that first time I served it; REAL MEN don't eat quiche but it all ended after that first time I served it. The next year I had to make 2 pies because my husband and son LOVED IT. I miss that family tradition. Both kids are gone and they moved to a different state so now I only make quiche for myself and hold the happy memories in my heart.... But I make latkes for me during Hanukkah time too, after all, Jesus was also a Jew. I even have a menorah I loved.
Use a salad spinner to squeeze out moisture. It even makes it easy to get some potato starch. If you want I also use a fine shredding blade.
I raise my glass to eggs milk and bread, we call that a French toast!
This is a joyous video to watch on a cozy wine-sipping cheese-nibbling evening a few days before Christmas!
I’m definitely trying this French Toast recipe for this weekend!! 😋
Lovely to see Melissa back on NYT. The french toast recipe was shared on this channel some years ago.
i love her! need to see her more often
These are so different from the latkes I was raised eating!
My mom was so lazy she threw chunks of potatoes, eggs, and stale bread slices in the blender blended the mixture and then fried they were gummy and greasy!
Mine are also different. They are much bigger and they need to be eaten on a plate with knife and fork. We only use sour cream but if someone likes, they can add applesauce. The poor people could not afford the expensive novelty treats. Caviar? Maybe the smoked salmon is okay but older Jews could not afford that. So I keep mine less expensive but bigger but we do like ours crisp.
thanks for sharing a bit of your holiday spirit.
She is the best!!! I miss her recipe videos
Melissa thank you sooo much!! It came out great, a true joy!
Thank u for teaching us all what convivial means
Am I the only person who rarely if ever goes to/receives invitations to holiday parties? This whole idea that the holidays are so hectic, family, friends, parties, events, who lives that kind of life? It's December 22 and I've not been to one party, I'm working Christmas Eve and I'm going to a friend's lunch Christmas Day. I do have casual plans for NYE and day.
Maybe you’re not a likable person?
@@PDXTundra You're absolutely correct, if only I was as likable as you. God, please make me be as likable as PDXTundra? Please, God? I've never met a more likable person than PDXTundra and I aspire to be that man/woman, thanks.
@@PDXTundra Oh PDXTundra, that job I described 11 months ago I lost. Now I can work on my likable skills if I'm ever invited to a party with 10 or
more people gathering, YAY!
@@rufusred44 oh he real quiet now
Why not host a small party yourself? Give people the idea of how charming you are and how generous a host you can be. The NYX has a gazillion recipes to start you off!
I always enjoy Melissa’s presentations...that’s it.
The latke bar was amazing!! I definitely want that! The french toast made my teeth ache just looking at it. I'm sure it's yummy but I just can't.. :)
Especially with that personal family touch: Herrlich! Wunderbar! Happy Hanukkah and merry Christmas to the Clark family!
This is beautiful, heart felt, intimate and special. Happy Hunakkah and Merry Cristmas to all!
This is the best french toast recipe around, and for Christmas morning I always make it using Pannetone
That French toast looks amazing.
That French Toast is everything. Happy Hanukkah and Merry Christmas and a Peaceful New Year, Melissa. (And, yes, we want your Feast of the Seven Fishes video next year 💖)
Thank you for putting the latkes in the fry pan with your hand! well done
Yes! Food is ❤️❤️❤️
Oh my...just tried the crème fraîche, smoked salmon, caviar, chives combo. Wow. My new favorite way to eat Latkes. TYMC!
That was incredible, I can feel your love for cooking just from watching. I am the same way! If I LOVE you I cook for you
Can not wait to make this 🥰 Thank You
Thank you Melissa!! My husband was listening and got excited at the sound of the creme fraiche & lox on latkes - we will definitely make that one of our latke choices this year. Happy Chanukah, Merry Christmas & Happy New Year to all!!
I'm in California. I love latkes topped w/ guacamole or hummus. My Jewish good friend is from Chicago. She eats latkes w/ powder sugar or maple syrup.
Salsa is fun, too! (I love it on gefilte fish!)
Beautiful
What a lovely lady
Never had Latkes but I want to try them because what’s better than fried onion and potatoes 🥔☺️❤️
I love the feeling of lighting the candles and singing the songs all the while eating oil-drenched food.
Very nice! Well edited!
Excellent video!!
Honestly, my favorite latke is always the one closest to my mouth. Very simple.
OMG this is what hubby and I do!!!!! Except never have I added roe with my lox oxox
No need for the music to be so loud. Hearing her is enjoyable enough.
These NYT videos are way too loud on the lowest volume setting, phone or tv.
...omg. Yes.
Whoa that brown sugar french toast thing! Doing this ASAP!
Melissa is wonderful! I've never 'baked' french toast, but I'll try it now.
She reminds me of the little girl who says “frickin bats” hahaha I think it’s in her mouth! She is pure joy!
Melissa, adopt us please. My family and I will all take up minimal space and always be grateful helpers for the holidays. My wife and I would both love working with you :-P yum. My dentist will frown at me but we'd work for Challah French Toast...and Latkes (cue the harp glissando...).
she is so funny! its great : )
I wonder if I can use the lettuce spin to dry the potatoes?
Love her energy omg
In Germany we call these "Kartoffelpuffer" 😄
My first holiday on dialysis. I haven't had any potato product but I need some for Chaunkah! Would you grate the potato before soaking overnight? What type of potato would be best?
Russets are best and DON'T grate before you make them as the potatoes will discolor and look quite un-appetizing.
on the topping bar...are those pomegranate seeds?
✨✨✨
I just tried that recipe yesterday from the site.
Onion goggles are the best!
Put the grated potatoes in a salad spinner to drain water
Hohoho!
Oy oy oy!
I'm just wondering if I'm too poor or the rest of the world is too rich. I live in Brazil where a can of caviar, of 125 g , is like 6 entire minimum wages. Imagine somebody working for six full months and just been able to buy one 125 g of one ingredient?
She calls it caviar, but in reality it's sturgeon eggs (roe) which is a lot less expensive than caviar. Caviar is veeeeeeery expensive still for most people in Europe and the US. Not 6 months minimum wage, but still way too expensive to buy with all other costs of living for normal people.
It’s the same in India. Imported foods like caviar and some fancy cheeses are really expensive and can only be found in specialty stores
What's she's using looks like salmon roe. Here in Sweden, a jar costs about $10 USD for 100g. It's not cheap, but it's often used in small quantities for special occasions.
Enzo Pérès-Labourdette Sturgeon is the species that is the most expensive. She is using salmon roe, which is large and bright orange, and much cheaper. Caviar is the same as roe/eggs.
Adeus doce eu are you also too poor for potatoes, onions, eggs, sweet bread and the like? You focus on the one expensive thing in the video?
Cough cough can’t wait for the challah and brioche recipe videos
i see scott! ahah
I wish Melissa Clark loved me (and made me latkes)
One thing I don’t understand is how she’s so skinny.
Skinny legend
She's a practitioner of skinnyism
Moderation is key.
🧬
miklosl88 carbs don’t make you fat😭
She's a runner.
Kartoffelpuffer? Reibekuchen?
Is there a written version of this recipe that I can have? I'd like to give it a try--not sure about the exact amounts to use.
Daughter looks exactly like dad it seems.
So basically it’s like hash brown.
What's the difference between this and a hash brown?
How come the title is holiday latkes and not Hanukkah latkes?
That tray wouldn’t be fun to clean
those are some tiny latkes
u know that’s salmon roe, not caviar, right...
Good idea ! Bland oily soaked pancakes broken with even more bland mayo just to add super bland salomon and to combine the spectrum of blandness a salomon roe.... Perfect! Try to make it after a week and let me knkw if you still think its "perfect"
So a latka is a Jewish pakora
Sort of. I have made them with besan, as it fills the egg and flour roles. But it’s not a true floury fritter. In fact, I use onion, potatoes, the starch from the potatoes, and black pepper. Sometimes zucchini.
Pretty ridiculous that you have to pay for a subscription to get this recipe yet here it is on CZcams smh
💞💞💞jeaus was jewish your video is good
She eats babies the way she put the slice of salmon on.
wow! I watch the second video of the recipe where the Americans do not peel potatoes well. you left rotten spots on it ! : )
Whenever i see a Jewish/Christian couple, they both look Jewish. Its like they were hiding during the inquisition and forgot they were Jewish
Oy no - latkes are the one area where I'm tradish (that is, having only what I grew up eating): so, sour cream and applesauce only!!! Mixing in other root veggies OK for the latkes, but PLEASE no other toppings and ban those disgusting Trader Joes latkes from your house!!
MrDixie12 shut up. Let people enjoy what they enjoy
MrDixie12....What a narrow minded, stingy and prunish comment to make....I don't even celebrate the holidays but food and diversity are what make the food/comfort go round. Grinchy.
Relax MrDixie
Why is everything on here just exactly what bon appetit does but like a day or two later and with less personality?
CarolinaYng because it’s latke season......
CarolinaYng There’s no melissa clark at bon app, and that’s enough for me. Love them both though
CarolinaYng Apples and Oranges, my friend. I truly appreciate them both for different reasons.
Because the NY Times has to clear everything with the government before they publish anything 😂🤣
Shut up, Scrooge.
I'm a big fan of you, Melissa Clark, but I gotta say that you really disappointed me with those onion goggles.
u know that’s salmon roe, not caviar, right...
