I played hours of Flood from a demo disk as a kid. It was incredibly trippy and fun, but the mirror death sprite hunting you down was genuinely terrifying!
Lemmings deaths always felt personal, if the death was accidental it sort of gave you a sad feeling and that feeling of an evil dictator if it was an execution lol
Dogs of War had that over the top, action movie style spin death, right? Good one! And that Smash TV one is pretty iconic. Does it happen on the ST version too? If I'd have thought of it, it definitely would have had a chance at being in the top ten. 👍
#1 for me was executing the decapitation move on 1987’s Barbarian: The Ultimate Warrior, then a goblin kicks your head into the woods. Pulling off that move was always so satisfying.
And how controversial was the death in a 2 player game of double dragon lol ..beating ur best mates player to death for ultimate victory...caused some arguments world wide that did 😅
That's a good one! I might even have included it if I'd have thought of it. I had a major falling out with my cousin about that. I was a right git. Never let him win.
Prince of Persia had some great deaths. I could quite happily pass the time by finding a good high balcony and take a spectacular leap into a pit of spikes! Barbarians decapitation was always a crowd pleaser as well.
@thejoyofsticks to be fair it's tough to whittle it down to just 10 and there were some great shouts. Another world and Lemmings really had some good deaths. If I recall correctly, Lemmings came about from a quick animation screen knocked up of the tiniest sprites the artists could draw getting killed in various ways.
Honorable Mention: Impossible Mission 2, which on the St version rewarded falling offscreen to your death with a sampled scream at least five seconds long
Good one! The original Impossible Mission on the BBC Micro gave me nightmares thanks to the electrocuting robots. (I was about 4 at the time, to be fair)
Getting your head bitten off by that dinosaur thing in Barbarian II (Palace version), or digested by the tentacle monster in the pit. That game had some spectacularly unpleasant deaths!
I will also contribute an honourable mention of the eagle in level 3 of Savage, whose eardrum-piercing death screech and subsequent bloodied corpse is the stuff childhood trauma is made of.
Very nice list! At the start I thought you were describing most of the deaths in Escape From the Planet of the Robot Monsters, but turns out you were not! It has a good variety of cartoonish deaths, impalement, electrocution, burnout etc...
I love there would be some that I'd forgotten, but I'm kicking myself for not including that. There are so many hilarious ways to die in that game. I'll need to put a video of the game on the channel to make up for my oversight.
I'd say the Lemmings death explosions are the most iconic(and hilarious😁). Ghouls 'n Ghosts and the embarrassment of being reduced to just your underwear before being turned into a pile of bones 😱 is a close second. The Another World death sequences still make me wince. 😧
@@thejoyofsticks I was going to include Barbarian, but noticed that loads of people had mentioned it. The decapitation move and the little goblin kicking the severed head across the screen are childhood shockers you'll never forget. 😱 There are probably loads more noteworthy game deaths that I fail to remember. Away from 16-bit games, the boot that comes down the screen and crushes Miner Willy in Manic Miner is a classic. 😄
@@kingstonlj > Another World death sequences the little worms at the beginning; that picture of the slash wound on your leg still gets to me for some reason...
Ooh yes! I remember being terrified of dying when playing the original on the BBC Micro and Electron as a little kid. Those robots caused me nightmares.
Cool idea for a video! Maybe you should include enemy deaths as well? I was instantly amazed by how enemies turned into a death cloud in Barbarian I from Psygnosis!
Sorry for being late, it's been crazy out there... Wicked freaked me out a bit. I'm pretty sure when you died the Moon Did this evil grin with long sharp teeth. The whole experience felt a bit Ouji board with tarot cards, demons etc. Great video as always.
Wicked is a game that baffled me as a kid. One of those pirated games without a manual that you boot up, try to play and switch off never to go back again. I saw a video from Pete (ThisIsPete) on his CZcams channel and it was intriguing. Definitely a game I need to come back to. Thanks for the kind words!
@@thejoyofsticks It's a Dizzy clone. I've beaten it in under 5 minutes, and it can be amazingly frustrating, but fun in a disposable kind of way. The most annoying aspect (making the death even more horrific) is that it's a 1 touch and done. Oh, and the 'final boss' is COMPLETELY random meaning you can do everything right and still lose.
One touch and done?! Sheesh. I remember at least one of the Dizzy games (Treasure Island) being like that. Unnecessarily punishing just to prolong a game's longevity.
Somehow I never noticed the little human icons dying in Oids! I thought you were going to strafe the little humans on the ground. I may have done that a few times. Okay a lot of times.
Great video StickHead and some great classic game deaths in there 😄, loving it. I can't recall precisely but I'm sure there was a pseudo-death in Monkey Island which turned out to not actually be a death after all (underwater I think)... that one struck me as a great death that turned it on its head.
I wasn't familiar with that one! Just watched a video of it (czcams.com/video/8O8EgRLFXNY/video.htmlsi=Wx-1tVDxzevI7wJj) and you are so right. The way the top of his head pops. Gross. But awesome!
Great idea for a vid and great picks. Thought long and hard as to what is my fav. death. I'm gonna go with Operation Wolf (ST port of course). Just Iconic.
Great video! Rick Dangerous and Kid Gloves deaths are part of the XX century culture. They are biblical. I have one addition: Ocean’s ELF. The game over screen, with decapitation and the head rolling down the hill.
Can you think of any specific Sierra ones that could have made the cut? I remember Space Quest 3 had a huge amount of different ways to kill the player.
@@StefanLindberg_YM2149 although it's not an ST-related death, i liked the one in SQ4, where you could go back to SQ3 using the timepod and melt down from the heat on ortega, dying with a "this is your brain on drugs" ref: "this is roger. this is roger on ortega. any questions?" (but SQIII was definitely my favorite in the series.)
I thought about adding Dungeon Master! More a single death, though. Imagine having to hoik your mate's corpse through the dungeon all the way to the nearest altar of resurrection! Grim!
i wish mortal combat was on the st i liked the one on game gear because of the chip tunes with the st you would have a version that has chip tune audio but also with samples and hopefully better game play and graphics (but i am sure they would mess it up like most arcade ports on the st). i know its not rational to want this compared to a more arcade like version but i just like the aesthetics
Ha ha! Yes! After seeing the ST version of Street Fighter 2, I'm not sure that a Mortal Kombat port is such a good idea. But still, lots of great deaths in that game. Going someone's spine out is always going to be cool.
Very good. I have to say from those you showed my favorite must be the Kid Glove which I see perhaps for the first time. It's creepy. :) I would add two other ones. Palace Software's Barbarian with the certain move which brings the football loving gremlin or whatever it is. AND.... Technocop. I mean, is there any more satisfying game for the death animations? Not in my opinion. :)
The decapitation in Barbarian certainly is iconic! You tend to see the player doing that to the CPU more than anything, though. Cybercop does have some nice, splattery deaths in it! But I seem to remember that the protagonist's death is just him lying down for a nap.
@@thejoyofsticks Cybercop? Was Technocop release with another name in some regions? I guess by deaths I assumed it was all deaths, not just player characters' deaths. Fair enough. lol cyber and techno are interchangeable, right? Cyberbabble, technosex... It's all the same thing! 🤣 I'm not familiar with Crime Wave. I shall search it up!
Weird Dreams had some great deaths, the Lawnmower, Easter Island Heads, Bee etc!
Yes! I seem to remember a lot of big, expanding, screaming heads in that one.
I played hours of Flood from a demo disk as a kid. It was incredibly trippy and fun, but the mirror death sprite hunting you down was genuinely terrifying!
Yes! The inevitability of death! It was such an evocative way of introducing a timer to a game. Can you remember what magazine it was?

ST Action. I've done a bit of digging around this evening and it's Issue 27, which was the 7th cover disk they published.
Aah, nice one! ST Action had some really great demos on their disks. I discovered loads of great games through them.
Lemmings deaths always felt personal, if the death was accidental it sort of gave you a sad feeling and that feeling of an evil dictator if it was an execution lol

In Another World. My favorite death is via the ray gun on level 2 when Lester turns to dust, The sound effect for turning to dust is amazing
Great one! And doesn't your little charred skull pop off and bounce along the ground too? 💀
#1 for me was executing the decapitation move on 1987’s Barbarian: The Ultimate Warrior, then a goblin kicks your head into the woods. Pulling off that move was always so satisfying.
I always associated that one as a way of dispatching an enemy rather than a player's own death, but it certainly is an absolute classic.
