  • After all these years, I finally have a 17” MacBook Pro in my collection once again! Since returning my college machine in late 2013, I've always wondered if another one of these beauties would cross my path.
I’d like to say a huge thank you to Luke for kindly donating this machine to the IMNC channel. Check out his Instagram here: / luke_sadler_
As you all know, the 2011 MacBook Pros suffered from GPU issues. Luke got this machine repaired under the Apple Extended Repair Program, but unfortunately the machine soon started to misbehave once again, and Apple refused to look at it a second time. The issues are very minor and I’m still blown away by how well this nearly 10 year old MacBook Pro performs.
Thanks for watching! I hope you all enjoy...

What the hell did I do with those drive screws?! I’m sure they’ll turn up in a couple of years 🙄
Sooo glad to see it back in some kind of service. Farewell my beauty - you served me well all those years.. until you started flaking out. Then work gave me a replacement and I basically stopped using you as soon as possible. Don’t take it personally.
Tbh so glad to see it go to a better place, even as a museum piece. You absolutely hit the nail on the head when you were saying about having that doubt in your mind about it’s reliably. I found it cut out most during high cpu loads (I’m a developer so doing a lot of intensive compiling stuff) and when putting pressure on the bottom near the MagSafe port. As for the high cpu usage, I’m not sure if that was the battery not being able to meet the power draw or just bad thermals. Check the thermal paste as it might be some cheap shite.
All in, this has properly made my day.
    Thanks 👍

I have an old 2010 15in Pro that experienced the same issues but they didn't start till I upgraded from Mavericks to High Sierra. I do development work myself and it is a pain in the a**. I replaced the battery and that stopped the random shutdowns, but as for the GPU it still works, but the machine only crashes when I boot into Windows 7, but I do find that in macOS especially using Chrome, some icons, and the cursor dissappear. I think a battery replacement will solve tons of the SMC issues. Video may be the next problem.

Yepp, that sounds like what it's doing itself when it boots and takes 90 seconds. Remember in About this Mac, it was saying Intel HD graphics... It would display the AMD graphics if that was the in-use GPU on that boot, so yeah, Tom if you see this, definitely have a go at disabling the AMD GPU and you might save yourself some time when booting up the Mac.

    • @Destructor8031
      @Destructor8031 Před 3 lety +1

@@ericwood3709 Actually in this case it's AMDs fault. It's a design flaw in the chip itself. Basically the underfill between the GPU die and substrate is the problem, it cant handle very high temperatures at all, temperatures than is considered normal for most GPUs so the underfill would soften and melt.

luke sadler I’ve never owned a MBP personally but I definitely want to get a 17” one at some point that’s for sure. Tom is in part the reason I got a PowerBook G4 (turned up today in fact), My Mac Pro (once had two; 1,1 that’s now a 2,1 that got sold and 3,1/2008 that I still have) and a older MBP at some point. I hope to enjoy the G4 once the OG 65watt charger turns up for it 😅 Glad you enjoyed the last giant MacBook Pro Apple ever made and well, glad it went to someone so appreciative and who will undoubtedly look after it. Sorry for the ramble, I tend to nerd out but once again; thank you for the donation to toms channel and for providing people like myself something to enjoy at the same time. May your new one hopefully provide just as much enjoyment if not more than the older beast 👌

    For the random reboot/shutdown 2 solutions :
1 - Install Macs Fan Control (it helps with the fan(s) and GPU temperature.
2 - On the MacBook, verify the MagSafe connector. I changed mine and everything was ok after that. On a late 2008, it is a small board connected to the main board.

At our school if you keep the computer through to graduation they let you buy out the lease for a reasonable figure (I think it was like $CDN120). This makes sense because they are likely off lease after four years and would just be returned for being sold of at a similar price as scrap or refurb.

I bought one of those in 2012 since Apple had stopped making 17" laptops - got it maxed out and still have it and occasionally use it from time to time.
I bought it despite having a 2010 17" simple because I wanted one with a quad core - and this was my last change to get one with that configuration.
I moved on to iMac 5Ks after that, and didn't buy an Apple laptop until the 16" MacBook Pro was released.
I finally had to stop using it since no one made Expresscard/34 cards any more, and the drivers for my Expresscard/34 cards stopped working in older versions of macOS. This left Thunderbolt 1 and USB 2 for peripherals, and no one makes TB 1 or 2 peripherals any more, and USB 2 was just too slow.

HDD issues, Apple refused service on these in 2015 and we where finding it card to get parts coming up to 2015.

You can effectively disable the dedicated GPU in software. There are more permanent solutions involving logic board modification (effectively remove the chip and reroute some lines) but a software fix works. The GPU is likely responsible for the sleep issue, I'd probably blame thermals for the random shutdowns but it could be the GPU is something is intermittently shorting to ground. dosdude1.com/gpudisable/

It's a really common problem, and parts are really rare. Although dosdude1 created a tool to enable the built in Intel graphics.

I bet Apple didn't resolder the AMD graphics chip in repair. They only put a foamy piece of tape on the chip so that the case would press down the graphics chip against its solder pad!

if you wanna fix the GPU issues, dosdude1 made a video where he demonstrated a custom firmware for these machines that will disable the AMD GPU rendering the machine safe from the broken GPU issue: czcams.com/video/n6ROPL2-5HA/video.html

Check out dosdudes guide to disable the dedicated GPU, so it only runs the onboard intel GPU only, that should get rid of the graphics issue

I did this on my late 2011 15" and it runs perfect now

Apple is the only PC maker that can get away with such shoddy hardware quality. Only they seem perfectly content to make PCs that break down due to poor soldering and insufficient cooling, and only their customers are A-OK with that.

I've had plenty of PC laptops with poor cooling design. And in this case it was more AMD's issue
