Yes, this did actually happen. No, it's not fake. For those of you that have been asking, it was found in a local Ewaste bin that is out the front of a store not far from where I live. It's accessible to anyone, at any time on any day of the week. I went there to dump some heavy old HI-FI amplifiers and when I saw the iMac just sitting in there, I had to grab it. The store where the Ewaste bin was located had been fine with me taking things before when I had asked. Just thought I'd clear that up. Have a nice day, new video on the way!

On eBay I found a 2011 21.5 inch iMac for sale, only $170. It said the Mac randomly crashed. When it arrived I assumed the hard drive was at fault, but come to find out, the upgraded 16GB of RAM was bad. It took out the upgrade, leaving the original 4GB in the Mac. Never spend a dime on it and I have never had an issue with it since. These are great Macs for the price!

It's amazing how apple has still not redesigned this imac in 2019. The 2019 basic verison still comes with a 5400 rpm HDD.
Which is ridiculous. My 2014 Mini also came with a 1 tb 5400 rpm hard drive. And it's so much slower compared to the SSD that I've attached to it through one of the USB 3.0 ports.
But Apple being Apple. If a Mac does come with an SSD. It's 99% of the time a 128 gb model. Which is too small for modern day computing. Thankfully decided to invest a bit more and get a MacBook Air with a 256 gb one.
This one had a 7200 rpm HDD inside it. Also that would mean you can technically build it into a new one by putting new hardware to make a sleeper.
I've seen businesses buy 2019 iMacs and wonder WHY they are so slow ... Uh, no SSD = pain.
They always had 7200rpm hard drives until mid 2012 (taper edge and fusion drive introduction), meaning that every 2012 or newer hdd iMac felt slow and unusable. Legit, my 2011 is faster than a 2017 because the hdd is about 2x as fast.
@@PackardKotch well the 7200rpm hard drive is not as zappy fast as any ssd on the market but at least it didn't get you painfully slow reading speed like 4k-5k rpm ones

It was in an Ewaste bin. Ewaste usually does get recycled.
Also found one with missing HDD, camera and a broken screen. It now works perfectly
It just happen to me too 6 days ago. I got an iMac 21.5” (mid 2010) that’s going to recycling. Only have to do is put a new hard drive. And install the Mac OS High Sierra.
I have a similar story. My town has an email group for local communications and events etc. I wrote to the town and asked if anyone had any junk computers they no longer that I could save from the trash. I got many replies with all sorts ranging from 70s ancient machines, 90s Apple power books and a few modern but broken windows laptops. The best find was someone with an “old iMac”. They left it at the end of their drive for me to collect. Turned out to be a 27” iMac of the same generation featured here in your video. I couldn’t believe it. It had almost the exact same issue as yours, except reformatting the drive fixed it for me. I still use the iMac as my daily desktop. What a find! Thanks for the video.
Oh man lucky you. I bought one for 100$ at a local store with same specs, changed the drive to ssd and i still use it today. Great for movies, photoshop and gaming. Those imacs are the best imacs ever made. Love your videos man! Good luck in finding more good stuff!

Opening the boot or the number plate.... both are actually pretty easy.
Over the past couple of years I've had several Macs from this era which were "not working" and it turns out the only real problem was that the HDD had gone bad. Good clean-out, SSD and RAM upgrades and they're perfectly usable.

Oh. My. God. This was my iMac! I used this for so many years before I decided to throw it due to it being incredibly slow because my parents had downloaded so much bloatware and the ram was always running at 100% I decided to throw it and I knew I should have taken the HDD. This is insane. I even remember putting that sticker on it in 2015

You can always put an SSD in the optical bay and not have to worry about the HDD temp sensor. You don't even need a carrier for the optical bay, you can just use some double-sided tape to secure the SSD to the back of the machine. It will be faster and you'll have the HDD for a Time Machine backup, or media drive.

In fact, I have a 2011 iMac 21.5" and once I needed to completely reinstall MacOS as it was running Ubuntu.
I loaded up network recovery, and using Disk utility I cleared the hard disk. The installer was for OS X Lion, but it never got past the downloading phase. After retrying it a couple times, eventually it would just get stuck loading network recovery entirely.
I then booted a Ubuntu live USB and used GParted to reformat the drive (I think I did it with HFS+) and reloaded into Network Recovery, and this time it wanted to install High Sierra.
I reformatted (again, but instead through Disk Utility) and got the install running, and it was then able to complete the install and I had the system running MacOS High Sierra.
This may in fact be something you should've tried on the Mac and it could've gotten the hard drive working again, and I hope this would be helpful in the future.

I have an iMac of similar vintage that I did a hard disk replacement on. Using a solid state disk does make a big difference in perceived performance. I removed the mounting bracket entirely and attached the disk to the case with sticky foam strips. The temperature sensor is an issue.
