  • Hi and welcome back! Today I made for you a jibarito sandwich. It's a steak sandwich with fried plantains instead of bread! It has a lot of steps but it's simple to make!
    Here are the ingredients:
    3 large green plantains
    6 thin steaks
    Seasoned with:
    1 tablespoon adobo Goya
    1 teaspoon cumin
    1 teaspoon oregano
    1 teaspoon white vinegar
    1 tablespoon olive oil
    1 tablespoon salt
    1 teaspoon garlic powder
    Sliced tomatoes
    Lettuce
    Cilantro
    Mayo ketchup
    1/4 cup mayo
    1/4 cup ketchup
    2-3 dashes hot sauce
    1/2 teaspoon garlic powder

This sandwich was created by a Puerto Rican guy here in Chicago where I live. He has a restaurant here in Chicago called Borinquen . I make these at home but the one served here does have mayo (no ketchup), a slice of American cheese, sautéed onions, steak, lettuce, tomato and garlic smashed into olive oil and salt brushed on top of the sandwich. They are amazing but I have to say I like the one I make at home more than the one from restaurant.

I’ve never had one of these until I made one for myself after watching your video. I must say this sandwich is amazing and I can only imagine it is even better when made by a more experienced individual like yourself or a chef...... Thanks for the easy walk through and this is now my favorite Puerto Rican sandwich, I like it more than my other fav, the Tripleta!!!

En Puerto Rico se hace desde siempre, pero le llamamos sándwich de plátano!! Así lo encuentras en los restaurantes y negocios pequeños. En Chicago lo llaman jibarito. Llevando nuestra salsa mayo ketchup! Excelente platillo!!

YEEEESSS! You did it! That's how we do it here in Chicago. Home of the steak jibarito. LaPalma restaurant has the best in Humbolt Park. I went to Puerto Rico in may, the food was deeelish ,but the ones I went to in New San Juan(Plato's on Isla Verda) never heard of it. You ROCKED this recipe minus minced garlic in the mayoketchup.

I am sooo happy I came across this vid again. I LOOOOVE this sandwich and now I know what I will be havin for dinner tonight or tomorrow. Depending how long I let the steak marinate. And, only additions/changes I will be making is adding some avocado slices and add cheese, but I will put it directly on the steak and melt it. YAY!! THANK YOU so much for sharing this with us. Arlene

I love your page so much. I grew up at home eating all of these meals, but I'm with my Irish bf, his 2 kids and our kids now and they are SO Picky. So it's so hard to actually get them to like anything beside just the handful of foods they're used to. I miss my Puerto Rican home cooking so much. I make what I want every now and then anyway. Soooo basically I'm eating with my eyes thru these vids lol Till My babies are big enough to start teaching them OUR meals and foods and having them help me in the kitchen and enjoy them together

I love making jibarito sandwiches at home! I make them almost identical to yours. For my mayo/ketchup I make a paste with minced garlic y pequito de sal and add that inside of the powder. SOOO GOOD!! And my family prefers swiss cheese instead of the usual American. I like mine without cheese too. I'm so proud to be Boricua and love learning more authentic recipes so please keep posting!
