Canadian 🇨🇦 and Slovenian 🇸🇮 soldiers swap rations

- Every army in NATO has its own field ration, commonly known as MREs (meals-ready-to-eat). While perhaps not the height of culinary expression, these rations give soldiers the calories they need to power through a hard day in the field. From Ally to Ally, their contents differ in small, interesting ways.
Watch a Canadian and Slovenian soldier swap their ration packs at NATO’s multinational battlegroup in Latvia. There’s a lot of beef on the menu, from jerky to goulash and ravioli, with some Tabasco sauce on offer for that extra heat!
The multinational battlegroup in Latvia is led by Canada and has troops from 10 other Allied countries, including Albania, Czechia, Iceland, Italy, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Poland, Slovakia, Slovenia and Spain. Our participants are Canadian Army Master Corporal Michael Vernon and Slovenian Army Private Teja Tropan.

"We always start off by eating the matches" man must be some canadian variant of a marine
No that’s just Canadians in general
That would be crayons!
About 15 years ago (when I was doing cool infantry/recon stuff and not riding a desk like I am now) we would eat match heads because supposedly the sulphur from them would digest and go through our skin and ward off mosquitos whenever we did JRTC rotations or courses at Benning (now Moore) No clue whether that was backed with science-probably wasn’t. 😂
Just Canuck humor.
@johnplummer4785 they have sense of humor than brits?
They should make episodes such as this with other NATO nations. It would be a phenomenal series. Countries sharing cultural differences can still have fun

Totally agree. I'm from Canada. You?
Wow, NATO, the largest military alliance in the world, responds to comments
@@NATOw Nato
Here’s a story from the past. Dad served with the Parachute Regiment from 1943 to 1957. Then we came to Canada and he joined the Canadian army. He told me on his first day he was in the mess hall in line for breakfast and one of the cooks came up the line asking the troops how they wanted their eggs. When he asked dad, he didn’t quite understand him. “How do you want your eggs. Sunny side up, scrambled, omelette?” A dad said “you’re going to cook me eggs how I want them”. Dad said he thought he’d died and gone to heaven.
On NATO deployments, (STANAVFORLANT) we used to cross-polinate" and about a dozen guys would swap ships for a week or two. I sailed on a German Frigate for a few weeks and really enjoyed it but the Dutch always loved coming to the Canadian ships because they could eat as much as they wanted - apparently the food was rationed in accordance with Union rules in the Dutch Navy. But our cooks would serve them as long as they were hungry and the line was open - as they did for everyone. As to eggs for breakfast, I normally had them poached - either that or in the French toast. But what I saw in this video brought back some memories as it made me remember how many guys used Tobasco sauce on their eggs. It wasn't to my taste either.
They say you will never find a Bad Cook in the Canadian Army. We send them to the Navy lol.
Oh, really? This Navy vet says otherwise. I enjoyed a lot of gourmet fare. Plus, I was in the army before that. However, the best cooks went to the Admiral. IMPs were mostly crap.@@douglashowell8368
Canadian military always feeds people well when they can in those mess halls. I spent two summers on a smaller base as a cadet, it was also a marksmanship training centre for reserve units and such. They fed us brilliantly. Including steak every Thursday.
@@GhostEye31 In the CF I gained so much weight starting in basic training. I ate and ate. Always good food and always lots of it.

Love to see one with a US marine opening his ration of Crayola crayons
They did a us one which was hilarious because the Italian man did not like the pizza mre. Which yeah perfectly reasonable
😂👍
They actually produce a proper Crayons Ready to Eat ration
Only the finest waxes in those crayons marine! Eat hardy!
hahahahaha
These type of videos shows why NATO is the best military alliance to have ever existed. It's not about the destructive power of their weapons or the size of their defence budget. It's about the people :D
Its about a desire not to have war (between us) to break the cycle of 2000 years of war. NATO (and the EU) both work wonders to establish a new future where we bridge the gap in terms of differences through talk. And do our best to keep people trying to disrupt that at bay. Luckely NATO has only acted in defense once (kinda) and i hope it will be the last time.
@@jbouchard6458 That's so cool, I guess I'll have to try those if I ever visit Poland in the future! Thanks for sharing! :D
Cheers from Singapore! Wish we had a NATO equivalent here to keep us safe from Chinese/Russian aggression too :((
It's the people from different walks of life from different countries working together to get these big guns firing accurately.
That's the beauty of a military alliance such as NATO: behind the big guns and rumbling war machines is a tight-knit group of people.
It is also *THE* strongest military alliance in the history of mankind to date.
Early in the current phase of the Russia-Ukraine war, the Canadians donated about a half million IMPs (MREs) to Ukraine. One if the flavors is called "POUTINE" and I'm hoping that the occasional Ukrainian trooper smiles when he/she gets to eat a bag of "Putin".
2 awesome countries 🇨🇦 🇸🇮
Slovenia and Canada: two of the most awesome countries in the world. 🌈 This was great fun to watch!
you should see Canada and The Netherlands little bromance. It is amazing to see.
I agree! I've lived in both countries! I currently reside in Canada! 🥳🥳
This interaction has spice, certainly.
Wow 2 nations I being a Czech adore ❤❤❤ 🇨🇿♥️🇸🇮♥️🇨🇦.

I love Portuguese food!!! Best part of growing up in Hamilton Ontario Canada was going to my Portuguese friend's house for dinner and homework and Italian friends house and Vietnamese and Chinese loved it all. Portuguese food was amazing. Never had the stomach for Indian food to hot and spicy

These are so fun.
Canadian here! Wow, isn't this what NATO is all about? Celebrating diversity and building friendships is awesome. It's one thing to see NATO members interact with each other on the field and in military exercises, but it truly is a whole other thing to see actual people from different countries within our alliance talk, share stories and teach each other about their country and language. What a great reminder that we're all human just wanting to live happily and in a way that shows support for everyone. Love to Slovenia and all our friends at NATO from Canada, keep up the amazing work. We're all supporting you from home! 🇸🇮🤍🇨🇦🤍🇱🇻
No...... NATO is NOT about touchy feely "diversity and friendships". While this may occur between services / countries, the prime reason for NATO is military strength over your enemy.
@@Imsobering7970 You are mainly correct, NATO is a military alliance for defence and security. But secondarily there is an important cultural role so that (for example) Canadians and Slovenians will willingly come to each others' defence.
@@Imsobering7970You can't have military strength without unity.
@@Imsobering7970 Yeah lol its a bit more serious than singing kumbaya over the fireplace lmfao.
It literally isn't, though. Go read the Mission statement. NATO's purpose is to guarantee the freedom and security of its members through political and military means, primarily against former Soviet action, or the actions of any other body to directly challenge or threaten those member states..
To be honest, it's good to be the part of this alliance. 😍
I admire their honesty with each other. True friendship.
That was cute! Thank the both of you for this and thanks to whomever thought this up.
These ration swaps are the best. I can't wait for you guys to test our Finnish rations.
Reindeer jerkey and wodka? 😂 I would eat that
My guess would be...
Ruisleipä
Korvapuusti
Leipäjuusto
Uudet perunat ja silli
Poronkäristys
Lohikeitto
Karjalan Paisti
Something like that.
IIRC Slovenia has had beekeeping as a part of their culture and take great pride in their organic, very wild forest honey.
Our honey is probably one of the best by quality you can get on market but i can understand the taste difference
Forest honey sounds amazing! In my part of Canada we have a lot of meadow honey. There is also a neat company that will host a bee hive in your vegetable garden so you get pollinators and then they come back and collect the honey! Now I want to try honey from all over the world :D
@@Silveritysome beekepeers here have hives inbuilt on a trailer so they park the thing close to whatever plant they want the honey of (commonly chestnut, accaccia or wildflowers) and wait lol.
Interesting. Not all Canadians like spicy, which is probably why the Tabasco sauce is separate.
In Canada I tend to buy my honey from the farmers markets rather than the grocery store (as he is probably used to). The grocery store honey is watered down (runnier) and has sweeteners added. The honey from the farmers market doesn't.
Too bad there wasn't any maple syrup in the ration. It might have gone well with the Slovenian muesli.
You hit on one of the great things about honey, with the one you bought from a farmers market, the flavour depends hugely on what plants the bees have visited to find their honey. At home I have some Acacia honey from Romania, which was a lovely Christmas present from a sibling and their family, and the taste is so light and subtle. In the past I had some Turkish honey that had a far stronger flavour, I think the region it came from was covered in pine forests...so a much different variety of pollen...it was also much darker, a bit like maple syrup. Wherever it comes from it is a great natural sweetener, fine to use in cooking instead of sugar...or best served on fresh bread or toast!
Totally agree, hate spicy!
I don't mind spicy things sometimes, but tobasco sauce is weak, as far as hot sauces go. IMO
Grocery store honey is full of Corn syrup thanks to the Chinese.
Look it up.
There should be no additives to honey in the EU
There was a big scandal in Slovenia involving sugar in the honey in the past. But as it turns out it was imported from China or something.
We love our honey in Slovenia. It is kinda traditional food. And we have plenty of variety. Honey from "Robinia pseudoacacia" one is the best for me. Every each of them is different from another
I love this series. Showing why NATO is the best alliance in the world. I wish one day to watch an Ukrainian soldier doing this with all his commarates in NATO. This is my wish. A field full of Ukrainian warriors exchanging food ratio with Slovenians, Polish, Esthonians, Finnish, Americans, Canadians, Spanish etc friends in arms, and I want this series to last 3 hours. 💙💛💙💛👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
It'd be cool to do a video with both Finland and Sweden, the two new members, with Ukraine, as like a trio group ration share.
Are you not watching the Ukrainians using all the nato gear now?
That will happen one day; it's not a matter of if, but when. Nations who value freedom & human rights stick together due to having the same overall values & disposition. Our enemies also share & possess the same values, albeit very different from NATO's. They value war & conquests, stealing someone else's territories & waging war against much smaller neighbors - just look at China & Russia, perfect partners in crime.
He doesn’t realize that he's tasted true honey for the 1st time in his life.
This is such a great series!
When I was part of NATO, in 1979, my Scout platoon cross-trained with a French Cavalry unit. We fired one another's weapons, and that evening some of us dined with the French, while some of them ate with our unit. Damn, the French Army knows how to eat! Even in the field, they had their own chow truck and chef! We ate freshly cooked fish, rice and vegetables. They also served small packets of beaujolais, or French wine. It was great! I really began to feel sorry for the French Soldiers that had to eat the Vietnam-era C-rats supplied by our platoon!
She thinks Tabasco sauce is hot? It's crazy how different our dishes can be
We need more of this, for the culture.
I love these kinds of videos from NATO! Keep up the Ration Swap videos, Allies!

Ex Canadian military here, never saw a mcpl this happy in my entire time in the force. Also I can confirm we do eat the matches, especially us infantry XD
Not an expert, but i figure that honey also depends on the the flowers that where used. (if it is real honey to begin with), but anyway how do rations work if lets say someone has a real aversion to the taste of fish? Are there like specifically themed rations?
Very true. There are some très flowers when its better, than dépends if its really narural or with sugar and other supplément
*tree flowers
I believe they may have gluten free, vegeterian, etc. but it might also depend on the nation?
It's usually different options, so vegetarian food is also an option. I'm sure soldiers swap with each other for what they want
You swap with somebody else, go hungry or eat food you dislike, me thinks.
This was fun!

I live in the Netherlands. I like honey and lemon in my tea. Used to Dutch honey, which is most of the time a blend and very modest in taste, I got a small pot of French natural honey from a small town in the Cevennes, a mountainous region in the south. It was totatlly different. When only having a small sipp, could taste all kinds of herbs growing there. Unbelievable.
It depends on the trees from witch the bees take the pollen.
More Please!!

As a Canadian, I can confirm I eat matches with my lunch every day.

This video is quite symbolic because without food the military literally would be on its knees.
I was a assigned to AIRCENT then AFCENT and freakin loved it!
It is crazy how different honey can taste. Even opposite sides of the same country can be very different, especially one the size of the US.
Nature doesn't exactly see borders, nor do bees. 😅
As it gets its flavour from the plants the bees collect from, it can be totally different just going across the town.

Honey, I’m from Louisiana (where Tabasco is made!). It is the bomb!! It makes everything edible!! 😂
Highly debatable. I enjoy spices as in lot of flavours, but not my mouth on fire.
Tabasco and Honey are so good mixed together really good spread over a rack of ribs or a nice chicken breast on the bbq
I am from Slovenia and I liked Tabasco (needed to point my location out because there are Slovenians who like hot sauces 😅) until I started growing and fermenting hot peppers myself.
I'm picturing them when presented wit two of our old C-ration meals!
She immediately got the soldier's match stick humour! My sister was in a Comm unit that went to Flint for joint training and she brought me back some K-Rats... I loved them... except the ham and lima beans and I still have a P-38 opener.

I think he should have put his tabasco all over that fish stuff. I thought it was funny she thought Ravioli was spicy because I’ve never thought of it as being spicy at all. Bordering Italy, I’m surprised she didn’t know what Ravioli was-maybe it’s a Southern Italy dish.
You also need to bear in mind that the ravioli in Canadian rations is Canadian "Italian" food, which often is not identical to actual Italian food. In the same way, a hamburger and fries in Italy often doesn't taste like a hamburger and fries in Canada.
It seems like a global trend that the food gets hotter the closer to the equator you get. Norwegian food is (in)famous for barely being seasoned while being made from very mild tasting ingredients.
@annehersey9895 why you think she didn’t know what Ravioli was? she never said that, she said “Sounds interesting” when he mentioned Beef Ravioli. Actually I think she knows exactly what Ravioli are, because when she tried these particular ones she said in a kind surprised tone that they are little spicy, because indeed ravioli are rarely spicy, at least beef ones. So, not sure where is this coming from...?
This shows how armies are much better as friends than foes
Honey tastes different based on the flowers that were used. Both sets of rations looked really good. I am so glad that everyone has figured out that an army marches on their stomachs and good food improves morale hugely. No hard tack for these hard working soldiers.
I want to say how much I love these ration videos. Please keep them coming. I noticed a lot of European rations are 24-hour packages. Decades ago, in the USA, when I mentioned MREs for the field to my emergency management training officer, he warned me. "If you eat too many of them, you won't s--t for a week!" They must have improved since then. We didn't have much then, but the chocolate cake was great!
i love nato!!! nato is the best!! slava nato!!
