- 🍴🇩🇰🇪🇪🇬🇧🍴 Five NATO troops from Denmark, Estonia and the United Kingdom compare ration packs.
Commonly referred to as ‘Meals Ready-to-Eat’ or MREs, each NATO Ally has its own unique approach to fuelling their soldiers when deployed. While the UK packs include tea and flapjacks, Danish soldiers are given tightly sealed packs of mackerel fish.
Footage of soldiers sitting in a controlled environment eating hot and cold rations while discussing the merits and drawbacks of each other’s food. It was filmed at NATO’s enhanced Forward Presence Battlegroup in Tapa, Estonia (before the COVID-19 pandemic).

in 1995, when I served in the Estonian Defense Force Army we were issued excellent quality canned meats.
An MRE was just a dream for the future which is now here and from what I hear the Estonian MRE's are considered some of the best out there.
So in 1995 thru didn't issue rations? Only some cans of food?
The Estonian ration isn't bad but there's some really good rations out there now. I'd put it around top 10-15 somewhere in that range. I've tried dozens of countries. I'll tell you a really good one you should try if you can get one. That's a Polish 24hr. The single meals are good to but the 24hr is best.
The real question is, do you eat it cold?
@@Oldsmokey1never Estonian MRE’s have got a lot better, it also depends a lot of what MRE you get, some of them are disappointing some of them actually taste great, specially in the forest.
I served in the danish military, and we used to get vacuumpacked ryebread. Once ran over a pack with our APC. The bread survived unscathed.
Did the APC make it?
@@AntonGully The only that broke, was the APCs self-esteem.
@@KingKharnivore as a Brit living in Denmark I could only imagine how tough that shit is hahaha
Yes, ryebread is tough - but no match for a roast prepared by a (any) Norwegian cook. These are so hard, they can be used for armor-plating.
Are you sure it wasn't concrete passed off as bread? 😂
A Brit that doesn't eat fish? WTH?
Also, Tobasco has a long history in military rations. The son of the owner of the sauce company fought in Vietnam, and thought the food was so bland, when he got back, the company started sending it to soldiers in the field. Eventually, it was made a standard seasoning in US rations.
That sucks cause you don’t see it very often anymore..at least in the US MREs
tastes are different.. what does the nationality have to do with that? :D
any sorce on that?
It had good street value among us soldiers. Elbow macaroni has it but it goes better on other mres
I know a Dane who doesn't eat fish too. Crazy for both countries in my opinion.
It’s nice seeing all these soldiers from various nations interacting, thanks NATO
Surprising the amount of difference between the calories expected to keep them going for 24 hours...
Also I'm very disappointed that my fellow Brit refused to try any of the fish rations. Don't be rude dude! ;-p
in u.s. we have different rations for cold weather maybe in the northern countries they dont have warm weather cold weather ration. also the people there are probably more homgenous and are used to certain foods unlike the states where we can have different cultural foods to try to make some of the troops happy. (as if that can be done where food is concerned)lol
He just doesn't like fish, or it makes him sick. I would refuse it too. I would also refuse anything with sheep meat as it makes me throw up. I think I'm mildly allergic to it.
Agreed.
@@miketaylor5212 The British ration packs of my day had an international flavour to them. There was always a curry to be had. Who can forget the oatmeal blocks - still salivate thinking about them. The Irish stew - just a little pepper and you have a feast fit for a king. Times and tastes move on however. I wonder if what I had even features in a modern British Army ration pack. That wuss with the fish - clearly not been in the army long enough to be hungry enough to eat his own boots with some of that Tabasco on them!
Rations, of course, could always be supplement with what can be caught in the wild. Fresh roasted Iguana, snake or Coypu in Central America, Cicada roasted and then slowly heated with fresh picked passion fruit pulped in Malaysia (Would not have dreamed of it if an Aboriginal tribal head hunters nad not intro'd us to it) are pleasant memories of a more active past but if there were a restaurant serving it, I'd be a regular customer.
@@Scaleyback317 - Thank you for your international servce.
I need more of these videos. It won’t be long before Finnish and Swedish rations join the crowd.
Welcome to NATO!
Eyyyy!
@Noah Fargo - Congratulations from the USA on your NATO membership!
Here here!
Sweden still not in :( Thanks to turkey
The swapping of MREs from different country’s probably something that has existed as long as MRES existed
My friend swapped 2 of his British 24 hour ration packs with the US soilders in the gulf war for a pair of US boots, he said the Americans really wanted the ration packs because at the time their rations were mainly dehydrated, but also the British desert boots were a bit rubbish compared to the US boots.
I used to love to swap our Dutch rations for any other nation. Not that it was better or worse but just because it was something different.
Having the same for weeks eventually does get to you.
Nevertheless, always carry your 2min Noodles. Life savers
American. I can understand the desire to have something different. I would be curious myself if I was a Soldier/Marine. Alas, I survived on being a US Sailor stealing the US Marine's MREs. A lot more spices and less rot flavor. Any USN Mess cook on a ship denying about spice, was only using Ketchup for their "tomato" spice. I had KP(food service) duty too. I know their tricks... USN Mess cooks....I know your tricks.
Love to see them being themselves for a bit and share more about their culture and favorite food. Thank you NATO for keeping us safe!!!
Total respect🙏
Meanwhile,
Russian soldier: "You guys have rations!?"
😂
Watching those young folks gives me joy. The idea of them fighting makes me sad. Darn the Russian leadership.
Alright, lets get this out onto a tray...
Nice!
Trying other nations rations is one of my favorite hobbies. I’ve been in the military 7 years now and have had the rations of 14 nations. I have two more potential trades in the works right now.
I realize you made this post 6 months ago but I gotta ask, of the 14 (or 16 now?) Different rations from other countries, which ones were your favorites and what were in them?
Which ones are your favorites or least favorites?
I really like these videos with all the mess going on in the world it's good to see that at least the soldiers still can work together
Glad you like them, there's more here: czcams.com/play/PL_vlwQEsZAbzA5OikUd8nZlu3YtiPQC0S.html
Love these ration swap videos, super neat!
Glad you like them! Make sure you check the other: czcams.com/play/PL_vlwQEsZAbzA5OikUd8nZlu3YtiPQC0S.html
Very good but I think everyone would have liked to hear more of their conversation and more of them describing the trade items. I love the ideas though.
The Combat & Survival magazine was one year testing different MRE and their answer to the danish one is "just missing a bottle of red wine" :)
These videos are so awesome!
Glad you like them, there are more here: czcams.com/play/PL_vlwQEsZAbzA5OikUd8nZlu3YtiPQC0S.html
Love this camaraderie between NATO military men and women 👌
its good to see my homecontry having both female and male service personel as shown in the video :)
What a brilliant series!
Thank you so much! We're glad you enjoyed it. Keep an eye out for more: czcams.com/play/PL_vlwQEsZAbzA5OikUd8nZlu3YtiPQC0S.html
all Tabasco Sauce is made in Louisiana. Its kind of funny how Britons like it so much
I'm glad to see the Brits have come to enjoy a product of my home state. It undoubtedly came about after having swapped ration packs with U.S. troops during the many times they've both trained with and fought alongside each other. My older sister got to visit Avery Island and the Tobasco plant long ago when she went there on a field trip while she was in elementary school.
because?
Ever since the days of the Raj Brits have liked curries and spicy food. There are a number of common British food dishes that are derived from Indian food, like chicken tikka masala and kedgeree.
Mackeral may have been the best choice there!
This is nice seeing different countries cooperate like this. Post more! particularily with our Eastern European allies.
I like how the Tabasco has it's own teeny tiny cutie bottle
how did i not know about these episodes, this is rad!
This is brilliant!
So cool!
Such a good series!
Interesting stuff and perspective.
Glad you enjoyed it! Keep an eye on this playlist for more: czcams.com/play/PL_vlwQEsZAbzA5OikUd8nZlu3YtiPQC0S.html
It somehow never crossed my mind that OTAN has a YT channel :D looove it
Kudos to nato content & marketing. Thats a brillant format!
Maybe as I'm Scottish and a Scot who isn't fond of being British but found the English/British guy 'a riddy' (embarrassment) with not wanting to try the Fish.
I get Mackerel can be a bit of an acquired taste but even so.
I agree I'm a brit but I do love trying different sea foods
If you don't like fish and there are other options why force yourself to eat something you don't want? Just to be polite? That's ridiculous, maybe the person offering it should take the time to discover your tastes.
Interesting concept. Whoever thought of ration swap was fairly clever, because it's actually very interesting
Who knew people would be interested, mind you, who doesn't like food?!
It's been a thing on CZcams for over a decade.
It's as old as the invention of MRE's almost :) People love to swap rations, because having the same thing day after day for weeks, you'll do anything to try something else lol :)
Did not know NATO had a channel
Yeah I just stumbled upon it today, it is bizzarely eerie to have a defense pact put out buzzfeed style videos
Really nice to see. I would love to try different packs. A true taste alliance! 🙂
I gotta ask, for the mackerel in tomato sauce did they have like…. Rye bread and some mayo? You’re not eating a true mackerel sandwich without that
Looks great - should be standardized with regard to packing and prep, but keep the regional/national flavors.
Keep on sharing. Looks far better than our MREs made in the 1970s and consumed in 1992.
At any rate... In the field, everything tastes great :-).
It's great to see companionship across the National borders. Thank you.
I just want to adopt that little tabasco bottle!
In the eighties I enjoyed Danish rations while in the Royal Guards. Two tins, some dessert, and chocolate. The tins came from a prime manufacturer and were delicious, until we, due to lack of time, just mixed everything together in a big pot. Spaghetti, beans, kidney pie, all mixed together. Was great when you were cold and hungry.
great concept but the filming and editing deserve a massive improvement to make it even more appealing ( such as more focus on the different products) 😉
This was very interesting. I liked the two country version better as we got to see more of each countries rations. All the rations sounded good. Even the mackerel in tomato sauce and I'm not a mackerel fan. Could we get more of these, please?
Glad you liked them! Keep an eye on this playlist for more: czcams.com/play/PL_vlwQEsZAbzA5OikUd8nZlu3YtiPQC0S.html
I did have C-rations (MCIs) on occasion in the early 1970s which Is rare when one is in the Navy. But, as a diver, we did end up spending some time ashore. I remember just having some green canned food and crackers. I don't remember it being tasty but you make do when you are young and hungry. I think I can remember some comments about the cans being WWII vintage. Things have surely changed since the 70s!
Great Videos!
I love NATO,
-from the US
Lmao you got pinned
I am surprised the Danish lady didnt know what halva was, it is popular in Lithuania too
Halva doesn't really exist in Denmark, at least not under that name. I have personally never stumbled upon it here. It's good though.
Found it at my local shop here in Sweden, had no idea what it was and decided to try it.
Really good, like some dry icecream type of thing.
Nougat is much more common in Denmark.
Civvies love ratpacks....but try eating them for 1-2 months straight.....they all taste the same and you really get.....how do I put this...blocked.....But I must say that this was my experience with American MRE's which were not 'reviewed' here. So i might be misleading the viewers Those EST rat packs are pretty good and the meat and potatoes, I agree, is not too bad at all. Raana rootsi or whatever is on the can. Go EFP!
Rations are for lifeboats.
Modern ration packs are good enough that the support trades can ignore feeding the combat arms while looking after themselves.
@Ron Ti - If you haven't already seen it, there's a version with American rations swapped with Italian rations. (The Italian soldier eat some US Sicilian-style pizza - he politely said that he would prefer to call it toast!)
This is definitely something we do when working with a multinational group. I don’t remember which country it came from, but I have a can of pasta with squid ink sauce.
If It was squid ink It was probably spanish
Sounds about Spanish. Maybe Croatian.
Yes. Probably sepia. Spaghetti al nero di seppie.
It's basically spaghetti with squid/cuttlefish ink injected into the pasta.
It's popular in Italy and Spain
@@pipas666THC or Italian maybe. 👍 Maybe it could be Portuguese as well?🤔
Really fun video,
No "baby's heads"? (Steak and kidney pie in a tin). I still have my little can opener from the days before ring pull cans.
If i remember correctly during my military years, you could use the British sticky toffee pudding dessert as a weapon, or body armour
I have had survival packs during RAF exercises (1980's) and the silver water packs were from 1960. Very nice ;-)
These videos are awesome. Irrespective of nationality they’re all brothers and sisters in arms, fighting for the same cause
That Halva bar looks intriguing, but I couldn't find a just-peanut variety online.
@Christopher Woods - I think the soldier was mistaken. The only halva bars I've ever seen in the USA were made from sesame seeds. And they are great! (There are also halva bars coated in chocolate, but they get too sweet for me.)
It depends on the country, I never heard about peanut one. It is more common to find one from sunflower or sesame. And it is usually really good.
Would be cool to have country tags above each person
In air cadets when doing Duke of Edinburgh we had ration packs. They weren’t that bad and I’m a picky eater. Easy to carry around as well.
35th like! NATO forever!!!!!
Yess nato
Could you make a video about the equipment of NATO soldiers?
We have a playlist with just that for you: czcams.com/play/PL_vlwQEsZAby5jGnhT-xywDBML3XVsAqN.html
Lets get this out on a tray. Nice!
we are NATO. PROUD OF YOU SOLDIERS
Thank you for NATO troops keeping us safe. God bless
Militaries around the world really took to heart the saying, "An army marches on its stomach." Not a bad rule to follow.
Good for comraderie and and morale. Who has the best tasting food rations?
That gave me some actual hunger.
"Crummy" 😂
"Just like it" lol
Its very important that the rations taste like home when ya far away fighting.
Last video I watched of this, it was just two soldiers introducing their ration pack. An Italian and an American. This one jumps between the different pairs too much!
These are fun videos.
I really expected UK to pull out the butter chicken there
🤭
I used to love big NATO exercises for exactly this reason. We all go straight to each others camps and start swapping stuff
idk I think if you're going to do this you have to be willing to try the food...I forgo which NATO ration exchange but one of them tried the chicken in "jelly", c'mon talk about being open minded. The fish isn't that bad :/
Italians cook with oil, French with butter, and English with water. It is delicious!
Oh my they actually get Halva, damn that's goooood stuff
THIS PSYOP IS CRAZZYY ILL JOIN TO TASTE THIS AMAZZZING FOOD
I heard Estonia has one of the best Rations for soldiers love Estonia From Kenya 🇰🇪-🇪🇪 I love the Estonian war of independence from the Bolsheviks a nation 98x times smaller than Russia roughly almost take st.Petersburg and liberated half of latvia proving if your a small nation or not you can still push to your limiys
What?! Wheres the rest of the video?
Nice I like to see The Netherlands vs American version :P
It sayes what country the troops are from at the begining but not throughout the video.
I liked the one where it was France and Norway? Speaking English and the Norwegian had Mexican tortillas.
Without even looking i can instantly identify the danish MRE. Ive eaten MRES for for over 5 years now. Give me another chilli con carne and ill go insane.
God bless each and everyone of them!
If you dont like my rations!!- I need to eat it every day!!XD
Hvad indeholder en dansk rationeringspakke? Bare af ren nysgerrighed.
Lol i have a same watch like the english soldier.( Casio f91w)
" A lot of British people eat dumplings" Yeah when they had school dinners🤷♂️
Dumplings are awesome 😊
I love Tuvalu 🇹🇻
Russians be like: “you guys got rations?”
There were a running joke about US MRE when I was in during the 00s. The joke is that we used them as Psy Op
The theory is, if you drop a bunch of US MRE to a bunch of hungry enemy. They will give up without a fight. Yes, the food is that dull.
Another joke about our MRE - When people ask what nutrient taste like, you would tell them to go hit up a US MRE 24 hours pack, it's pure nutrient and it's basically tasteless. It's like having meat pill....
I think there is a reason why the US MRE is not shown here, well, nobody is stupid enough to eat them except us grunt.
@Running Productions - My brother was in the US Army followed by the Air National Guard in the 1990s. His packs came with cute little bottles of soy sauce and Tabasco Sauce to jazz up the taste.
Back when I was "in" in the late 80s. US MRE's were called "Meal Rejected by Ethiopians". For the younger people. A lot of famines going on in the 80's. The British 24 hour packs were like Gold for trading with the US troops.
Okay but none of them tried any of the danish rations wtf?
More like exchanging Christmas presents 🙂 👍 👍
Miss the British Army rations from the 1980s, Babies Heads,MFP, Chicken Curry, Biscuits dead fly. And yes,we had fish (pilchards in tommy sauce) in the 10man compo packs.
Where’s the Bully Beef in the British ration???
I don't eat fish
Maaaaaan drop to the ground and give me 50, dont be disrespectful.
Edit: i do like these video's tho. It's a fun way to get some interaction between the soldiers in NATO and we get to see, and learn.
just love that it took only 2 words of pronunciation of the Dane to know he was the Dane. XD (Dane myself) we have the worst accent
Highly entertaining accent. I'm maternally Norsk with basic mother tongue lingo skills.
Haha yeah only ever need a few words of English to say "Yeop, that's a dane" :D
Soldiers are the same, no matter where they come from.😊✌🏽
No mention of our infamous constipation-biscuits?
1:36. Not tryin fish? grow up mate
In the 80 ties, we had cigarettes and Eau de vie in our rations.... Legio Patria nostra....
On average I'd guess you will get more British people who won't eat fish, or at least only battered cod with chips, as compared to people from the Baltic and Scandinavia who'll eat a wider range of species including preserved in various ways.
However there's a section in all British supermarkets with tinned mackerel and sardines in olive oil, sunflower oil, spring water, tomato sauce, curry sauce etc so obviously some people do eat it. I do. I think mackerel could make a good military meal. Pickled herring is OK too. I'd just draw the line at the aged putrid Swedish special stuff. The smell would probably give away your position anyway.
Kippers!
I really want to know who the producer of this "royal army" chocolate is. Doesn't look Swiss to me.
i enjoyed this content but lost track of what they where eating for all the jumping around
this just reminded me that i will be drafted in 1 and a haf years
