I just want the team who made this to keep their dev pipeline going and make a sequel. I want more Geno and Mallow. I want something more out of this version of the Mario World.
Same, I never Supered a Mario, and the (apparently pretty fuckin' huge) lore is daunting, but this particular game is so charming, and Mallow and Geno are just adorable, and the writing is so fun, and if I could afford it, I'd get the sequel/spin-off in a heartbeat. I'm not familiar with ownership rights and whatnot, but. If this remake exists, I'm gonna hold out hope that we'll see moreof these little guys.
The team that made the original SMRPG splintered off from Square and formed Alpha Dream, the studio that went on to make the Mario & Luigi RPG series until they shut down due to insufficient sales in 2018.
@@kekeke8988 those games were pretty decent wish I played more of em
@@kekeke8988oh, that makes sense
I was skeptical back in the day of a Mario RPG but when I heard Nintendo had gone to SQUARE for it, I had no more doubts. The game isn't terribly long but it's an amazingly well made game and I would imagine this remake is an incredible way to revisit it or experience it for the first time.
I never played SMRPG but i once play SMBRPG on gba, ir what think it's called and it's a very cool game, i remember having fun playing it
I like long RPG games. 🤔
@@chaser5616SMBRPG is not a game that exists
@@jclkaytwo it's Mario and Luigi only i remember what i called
@@chaser5616 okay. that's a great game. its full name is mario & luigi superstar saga
Found my SNES copy at Blockbuster when they were selling off all their cartridge games. Paid 5 bucks for it. Still have it, too. Fantastic game.
I got mine free from a friend, it's disgusting what people charge these days
$5 for a legit copy of Mario RPG?? Solid deal! I got mine for $90 on ebay auction
@@Thrillin_Chillin_Drillin If you're paying that much, you're frankly part of the problem. Reseller scum can only be stopped if they're starved out. Never pay more than $15 for an old game.
@fmsyntheses perhaps I forgot ro mention it is cib (complete in box) I am not part of the problem.
@@Thrillin_Chillin_Drillin If you ever pay a price that extortionate, you absolutely are. It doesn't matter if it's CIB, you should never pay more than $15. I got a complete set of CIB Famicom Dragon Quest games for $40.
Emulation exists so we can starve these parasites. Please stop, you're ruining everything.
The thing that made SMRPG magical, was how many new things it introduced and put together for its era. Top to bottom, one of the most well put together adventures ever.
I got this remake early for Christmas. Let me tell you, this is fun. As someone who has enjoyed the original, but has never beat it, I think everything I’ve seen is a really faithful recreation and the cutscenes are gorgeous.
This was my intro into RPG games and the humor never gets old.
Did the original have any kind cut scene
Yes, but they were very SNES like. Overhead view of the story playing out.
I think what really won me over with smrpg is the immediacy of action in the game. Even other Mario RPGs generally seem to have a lot of exposition, a lot of repetitive battles or slower traversal. This game very rarely feels like you're in between important parts of the game. It's a game that's constantly happening.
Land's End definitely drags a bit but otherwise not wrong
LOVED the remake. It was fan service to the max. However, the game felt way easier than the original, mostly because of the spillover damage to all enemies on screen if you time the hits perfectly.
It’s not so much that it’s easier it’s just less tedious
@@pixelatedsethtube1271 that's what made it easier. Alot of the old grind for levels and some of the challenges with the enemies was gone . I never had a game over basically....up until I fought culex in the post game.
I would not say a 1 for 1 remake is fan service. It is more of a remastered than a remake much like Links Awakening
@@andrewcarlton6196 My dude, they quite literally remade the game from the ground up. A remaster is taking the exact same original game and upscaling textures and stabilizing the framerate. Maybe an extra QoL feature here or there. SMRPG and Link's Awakening got full on remakes.
@@Skaftholu no a remake is were you change some elements, better graphics, game play is modified significantly and the story hit most of the pain beats, but can add new things to improve.
Remastered is when you just modified graphics and music, but the gameplay and and story remain the same with only minor quality of living improvements.
Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster is built from the ground up, but its gameplay and story are the same as the original, but has better art works and music.
Where as Resident Evil 2, 3, 4 and FFVIIR are remakes cause the tell a very similar story with the characters as well as the gameplay is heavily modified.
Gotta say one of my favorite bits in any RPG is in this game- the pantomime sequence with Princess Toadstool and the Chancellor of the Mushroom Kingdom. Amazing stuff. Thanks for sharing this with us!
Got it at launch but let my 13 year old nephew beat it first, and I'm not making this up, he said it was the greatest game he's ever played. I was 18 when i played it back in 1998 but felt the same about it.
This and Link's awakening remakes is the finest way to bring these classics to the modern age.
still hoping for oracle remakes
Indeed. I hope this trend continues. I can think of many games that can benefit the Nintendo remake treatment
Not for 60$.
at least mario rpg has a stable framerate...
They never fixed the slowdown with Link's Awakening though, right? It made it borderline unplayable
This was one of those game I absolutely went over from top to bottom multiple times when it first came out (I was a very nerdy 12 year old) so I've held off on the remake for the moment to tackle newer games but it's at the top of my list of stuff to get when I have some extra cash. I did randomly pick up the remake of Mario and Luigi Superstar Saga on the cheap not long ago and it was a great reminder how much fun the various Mario RPGs are.

@@LegoDorkhow did you buy the OG for your switch? it wasn't on the switch before the remake came out
Booster rolling thru his Tower on a scaled down train was peak Mario RPG Insanity in 1996, I was there for it then, and here for it now. Its just a fun game to play through.
This was one of two big, very welcome, surprises this year (the other being Metroid Prime). It is, as many have said, not very long. But that's actually a good thing for me these days. I was a teenager when the original came out, as well as a huge RPG nerd in the 16-bit era. I am a teenager no more, and while I like that I've kept room in my life for games, that isn't because I have endless time and nothing to fill it with. I'm really happy they chose to bring this one back.

That 'switch-click' soundbite at the start of the video should have been a beer can snapping open ;)
On one hand I'm sad that as a Brit I never got to play this as a kid. On the other hand, I did get to play Terranigma
Thank you for spotlighting this game! I'm going to buy it for my nephew. Who knows whether he'll have the patience for it, but maybe it will be the gateway to him enjoying some of the cast-iron classics that I played in the '90s. Merry Christmas, SNES Drunk :)
Was one of my favorite games this year. It was fun revisiting it, and I loved the new post game side quest. Also, being able to just teleport to the Infinite coin room instead of having to redo all of Bowsers castle again was a huge plus.
Ah man, that FF4 boss battle music at the end was fucking awesome
It's part of the game soundtrack; won't spoil where you hear it though
I never got the chance to play SMRPG when I was a kid, but I was happy when they did a remake of this.

@@MonsterfromHell2543That's nice, dear. Now finish your mashed potatoes.
I'm glad they kept it in line with the original game. While I don't like the rhythm game combat (I'd prefer standard, 'boring', turn-based JRPG combat), I am glad they kept it...Unlike the remake of FF7, which became an action game.
The FFIV Boss theme is so kickass. I loved it when it played on the original Mario rpg game. Got a physical copy of the remake. Going to finish it after Zelda totk. Been following your channel for almost as long as you've been here. Glad to see you still making Videos. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year homie. 🍻
Still one of my favorites ever. I had a blast revisiting it. So much fun.
I love the idea of you reviewing SNES remakes/remasters and the like. Would love to see more content like this!
Recently found your channel and subbed. Having also played the original way back when, I appreciated the updated graphics and addition to the battle system with timed attacks an all for sure. Going in with this game anyway just for the nostalgia trip. I kinda expected MAYBE something new would have been added, which of course is a welcomed thing but regardless it was still a good time. I too just had that cheesy grin as well though. That's what it's mostly all about though eh? :)
When I was a kid, I alwasy thought Geno's hair was his nose.... I didnt realize it was bangs until i played the remake.. HD cleared that up for me....
Yea I thought it was like a huge wart or something
I haven't been here from the start, but I've been around for a while and I'm just really glad snesdrunk lives on reviewing all games, it's just switch/sega/whateverdrunk. You're one of the best, keep up the good work!
I’m streaming this game currently (as someone who has played but never beat the original), and let me just say: it’s a fantastic stream game.
My chat is made up of both people who loved the OG growing up and people who have never played this game before, and it’s quickly becoming a favorite!
This game just has such fantastic pacing and story beats, you can get super invested in the characters very easily, and you can potentially go through multiple story arcs per stream: very fun!!
Merry Xmas Mr Drunk! and thank you for a new episode!
You're back :). Hope you are well, have a merry Christmas!!!!
Star ocean 2 R is how a remake/remaster should be done
Agreed. It's an awesome remake!
Super Mario RPG is what Final Fantasy Mystic Quest should have been
I am glad this remake is staying true to its roots. Wish another childhood remake would have stayed more like the original too. Thank you always for the great videos!
I knew this would be my Christmas present for this year as soon as I saw the holiday release date. And now, that time is just right around the corner!
4:38 That's quite the song in the background. I can't wait to get to that battle
I'm so excited for this game! I had so much fun playing it as a teenager on the Wii virtual console. I absolutely loved the soundtrack. Can't wait to hear the remixed music!
I have the SNES version from when i was a kid but i was to young to understand it so i barely got anywhere then forgot about it. I preordered the remake the as soon as it was available and got it the day it released! Beat it in a week. What a fun and exciting game! I love SNES music so i kept it on the original most of the time but the new versions are awesome as well!

Lucky! You get to save a lot of money and just stew in your hatred. I'm jealous.
I’m in the same boat. When I rented it I thought it was another Mario game but I was wrong. I just didn’t understand RPG back in the 90s.
Total length of video: 360 secs.
Total length of "Switch Drunk": 2.5 secs.

Ive played since atari , this is the first system i actually wanna collect for, especially marios games , oeach, toad , yoshi, octopath, xenoblade, dead cells, mario kart, i wish wed get a f zero and a mike tyson punchout with iron mike
So happy to hear. I love your takes on the original game and I am excited for the day I have the budget for the remake
I do wish we had a few more QoL updates, like being able to manipulate the camera. Some of those jumps are still a little EHHHH in the isometric perspective (paratrooper, nimbus sections). But overall a fun remake, and the QoL fixes we got (like autosave, fast travel are nice additions). I finally was able to get 30+ super jumps. Still trying to do 100 super jumps. The rematches are a def. tougher...on the final rematch and it's a doozy. I do like the new gauge, but hardly use those super moves, since the game is pretty easy overall.
(Hot tip for 100 jumps: Don't look at the enemy, look at their shadow. Mario's shadow stays on-screen for the entire jump in most cases, making it a lot smoother to follow. You're trying to time for the moment the two shadows touch. I never got the 100 jumps in a row on the original version, but I was able to get there on the remake just with watching the shadows and practicing for a few hours.)
@@benstevens44Oh, thanks for the tips with the shadows- I suspected there was some trick to it, but I never quite found one that got me more than 12-13 or so jumps. I'll try that next!
I found that during the paratrooper segment, it went WAY easier when I used my pro controllers d-pad rather than the stick. It seems to me like the stick makes Mario control too "loose" which led to him often missing jumps that required precision or even veering off into directions I didn't know I was moving the stick in. When I used the pad Mario ALWAYS landed where I wanted him to, but the sticks of the Joycons or even the pro controller? More often than not that I missed out on a jump.
@@goranisacson2502 i got a lite, and been d-pading it, was still kinda eh
@@thecunninlynguist Interesting. I just have an OG Switch and a Pro Controller I bought at the same time, maybe there's a difference between the d-pad of a pro and the one in a Mini... or maybe I just perceived the difference between stick and d-pad so great that I'm overestimating it.
I think the most common complaint is more about the combat simplification with splash damage and the super meter, making an already easy game even easier, which then contributes to its short duration. And in a personal opinion, they could have bothered with a "Hard mode" to spice things up for old players but didn't.
That being said, i enjoyed this remake so much! Even if it's mostly nostalgia talking, it's true that back then in the SNES it had the same charm that years later would make us interested in things like Kingdom Hearts (at least at the beginning) : a good Square RPG mixed with an unexpected and funny concept
Too poor to afford snes when i was a kid so i never got to play this. Now that I'm an adult and i have the money im going to get myself some captain crunch and get knuckles deep in this bad boy. Pumped.
Absolutely love that for you, live your best life!
Buying 60$ remakes is one way to poverty.
I need to play this game. Good thing I have it on my snes mini.
I thought the new graphic style back on SNES was next level i wanted this style used more , id love to see a mario rpg 2 with the same angle but octopath style with bowser , mario etc
You nailed my gripe in the first 30 seconds. I don't recall the original being that short, because it wasn't that easy. You level up really fast in the remake and the triple move, although is fun, is also cheap.
Been waiting for this one! Love you, SD!
Sweet music. A top 10 SNES, for me. Such warm memories. Wonderful adventure!
I miss these days.
I remember watching a friend play the original back in the day and I always wanted to play it, but i never got to. . He was a smart kid and it looked like a challenging game for him, so i figured it would be. . Needless to say, I was excited for the remake, but since all the reviewers are saying it's so short and easy, I'm gonna have to wait for a sale now. I wish they would've at least made a hard mode for the more experienced RPG gamers. . Just doesn't make a lot of sense to spend 50 bucks on a game that can be beaten in a couple days when you can get a game like prince of Persia the lost crown for the same price. Loving that game btw.
Love this game. It was my favorite as a child. I still hate that Yoshi race though.
The remake has been great. Modernized graphics and and visuals. Added features to the gameplay. But still feels nostalgic and like the classic Super Mario RPG. I think it's a home run.
I feel like the game didn’t need a remake. If so, I wish the overworld sections were in actual 3D instead of the awkward isometric angle. The battle system didn’t need any updates imo
I still remember the days I'd see a friend as a kid and just watch him play Super Mario RPG. Of course, we'd share the controller and we had a lot of fun. I got a physical copy of the remake and it's a real treat. I consider it to be a notch above it's already classic status. It was my own christmas present.

The original gave a lot of depth to Bowser too, which I liked. He was a fun party member.
I like the sound of that "scrapbook" feature. I played the SNES version a few years ago and enjoyed it, but for some reason I can't remember, I stopped playing for a while and by the time I went back to play it I didn't remember what I was supposed to be doing.
That one was a game I grew up trying to play but emulators had some trouble running it.
Now that the remake was out I've played it an I don't remember the last time I had such fun with any game, it's amazing and I've never expect the jokes being that funny.
Don't even think another RPG made me want to talk to every NPC on the map because of their dialogue quality and straight up goofiness.

I want to thank you for posting and have a great night!
I'm very surprised you didn't even mention the biggest difference between this and the original, which is all the post game rematches and the 3d version of the extra boss at the end
Love that final fantasy battle theme at the end.
The fact that my final play time counter was something like 12 hours just made me so happy. ☺️
Real talk: the new Booster’s Tower theme absolutely slaps.
it's grown on me. but I still prefer the OG with the faux horns
All the new themes slap.
I love how Culex is still a 2D sprite. Really emphasizes how they're from a different world. Glad they didn't change that from the original.
Does Bowser still get the same huge tears pouring down his face?
Love this remake. 💖
There’s a bunch of things that wasn’t mentioned that improved the game and makes it more interesting and enjoyable like randomly 1 enemy will be stronger then the rest to make it more challenging as well as being able to block or take reduced damage from
Enemies special attacks (unless specified) but some of the name changes that enemies for is a bit disappointing
One of my first RPGs..... still amazing.
I just finished this and this brought me back to my childhood.

Just discovered this game on the Switch and I LOVE IT! I’m not a huge fan of RPGs but this one is so cool!
When this game first came out, I didn't know what "RPG" meant. So when I saw the screenshots of this in NIntendo Power, I assumed it was a SNES port of Super Mario 64.
When I was a kid, i went the entire game thinking the sword (Exor) was the final boss Smithy.
This absolutely fills my heart with joy. ❤
Been loving SMRPG remake. It's incredibly faithful and clearly has a lot of love put into it. Though I do wish they kept Mario's peace sign and Frogfucious' name! lol
This is kinda good looking and I did the secret boss in the original. I guess I like the new look well enough.
the new postgame boss battles are the only reason to come back
I love Switch Drunk. Great vid 👍
It's like they say something that's good stays good.
All this game needed was a little touching up and pretty much it's good (enough) for the modern era.
I cant wait to pick this up as I never played the original. Another great game to pick up for Switch is Kirby's Return to Dreamland deluxe. I grew up on NES and SNES and never played a Kirby game till now. I just never picked them up.
Top 5 SNES RPG?? No way. Blinded by nostalgia bro
I left the soundtrack on original too. The new compositions are good but the original OST is one of the best soundtracks in any game imo.
That splash damage makes the game look much easier and quicker to pass than the original. And the original wasn't that hard to begin with.
I loved the remake personally. It felt a bit easier than the original due to the triple moves and surrounding damage thing. but it's still really great. I personally went with the new music as It was still Yoko that redid them, i wanted to hear what she thought they should have sounded like with less of a hardware constraint. lots of fun. highly recommend this one
This game... there was a level where you needed a certain code..I found the answer in my dream. When I woke up the next day, the code worked. I believe it was "pearls" or something .
Just finding the answer in my sleep was trippy at 11 or 12.
Love the Switch and Steam content!
Well, spamattack Ultima, Bahamut and Limitbreaks etc. in Final Fantasy while fullhealing all the time isn't much strategic as well.
Secret boss of this game is a really unfair challenge, either I'm not good at it or there is a good portion of luck needed to win the fight.
Did it once, then never again.
I can't wait to get this for Christmas. I'm so excited
Great video thank you 👍
I cringed when I saw they changed the nice aesthetic of text on parchment into that other textbox.
Idk if I wanna call that my dealbreaker but it is one of the things I really liked about the classic game.
The menu and battle UI have been changed to look cleaner and more minimal too, I like both but the snes menu had a bit more personality
I like the original graphics more
Paper Mario and the Thousand Year Door remake is coming out this year and I’m beyond excited for this
this just looks amazing ✌✌
I really wish there was a Hard Mode to go along with the new Breezy Mode. Someday I'll attempt a low-level challenge and see if that scratches the itch.
was the original also rhythm based (can't remember for the life of me)? Or was that implemented to resemble more the paper mario games?
