One form of market manipulation the video failed to address is how a lot of content creators are making "picks" well after they brought up those cards first.

I had 3 auctions from probstein123 going when I saw this video, and I was thinking, “shit.....” And one bidder with a (0) feedback pushed my bid up. And I’m thinking, here we go, it’s gonna happen to me. They only pushed it up to half my max bid, and the card ended up selling for $13 over my max bid, but still. I thought I was about to be shilled, for sure. That’s the last time I enter a max bid unless it’s the last 2 seconds of the auction. And this particular card has no sale history because I’ve never seen one in a BGS 10 pristine (what this card was graded) or a PSA 10. So I was just picking a price I was comfortable paying, clearly, it wasn’t enough.

I think they’re hoping you ship before being paid and then they keep card. I’ve had 3 people not pay after winning lately. One guy said his CC was stolen. The auction was for a $13 Jordan. Seemed suspicious because he never contacted me. I contacted him and his sentence was short and to the point. Didn’t seem bummed about not getting card.

One other problem/BS is people buying raw/ungraded cards...getting them..and then returning them saying they are Not As Described----I figure they must be looking for 10's only and if not, they send it back.---Why else would they go through all of that trouble? And why bid and take the card away from someone who actually looked at the pictures closely and want the card???

As the buyer read the description and contact the sellers with any questions. As sellers make better descriptions, and promptly respond to the buyer’s questions (we all have cell phones and the ebay app🤦) and if the seller is a man of few words. Dont buy his cards. He is obviously just out to getcha. If you contact a seller and it takes him several days to respond Id suggest never buying off that person. I prefer they get back to me within the hour.

supercrop420 not even gonna lie the market is effected by youtubers and social media. We as collectors need to do more research and not let the market be affected by the influencers. “Low Hanging Fruit” lol I know who your talking about .... that’s funny! Also I will say it is crazy with the technology today that we cannot get perfectly centered cards all the time without off the print defects. I feel in the pain that every time a new video pops up the market reacts and then a card that was $3 shots to $15+.

Geoff this is another stellar video! Not just the content, but the wording you use. Anyone whose been in the industry or used eBay to buy/sell for very long has probably seen or at least sensed this at times. It’s definitely a fine line to figure out so as you said, it’s just a matter of always doing your homework and becoming familiar with the potential potholes.
I’ve had annual Market Movers subscription for couple of months now and absolutely LOVE these new features that you’ve put in place and explained here. It’s so disappointing that eBay doesn’t require PAID status to show as COMPLETE, but you’ve built in what can at least be used to investigate further. Another approach I considered in the past was removing any high (or maybe even low) bid that was above some standard deviation or control limit that would make sense... similar to throwing out highest and lowest sale in a time period as they do with judges scores in some of the subjective Olympic events. But it could be calculated here.
Anyway - the hot card videos are great, but you’ve had a handful of informative videos that are extremely helpful to those who are considering a deeper play in this industry.

  • @SageTheCollector
    @SageTheCollector Před 4 lety +1

Great video. I think market manipulation is much wider spread - especially over the past month or two. When the 1990 SkyBox Jordan went through the roof last month, my first thought was market manipulation. There’s really no other explanation for such a massive, quick jump on such an inexplicable card. And after a week or two, it was no surprise that prices plummeted back down. I noticed the same thing happen recently with the 2017 Optic Retro Series Fast Break Scottie Pippen. All of a sudden it inexplicably went up like 1600%. Then everyone flooded eBay with their copies. But of course none of them sold, and prices plummeted shortly after, because it was all a ruse. As a buyer, if you see a card skyrocket in price in a day or two, and you can’t **definitively** say why - RUN AWAY.

  • @johngenovesi5287

Geoff this is great! I have been thinking about this for a while now. There are outliers in the data that simply make no sense in some of these sales. In any data set you have to throw out the outliers. I started using a sniping program a month ago when these cards were going through the roof. I love the fact that you are talking about this and raising the issue. All we want as Investors is a fair deal. We are willing to pay a lot sometimes for a particular card however all we want is a fair and honest marketplace. This is a great forum and one that was sorely needed in a hobby "we all LOVE!"

If a card sells for over $300+ on an auction style format on eBay, as of today’s date, unfortunately there’s about a 35% chance it’s been shilled, and that the “winning” bidder/buyer has less than (20) feedback, often times less than (5) feedback, which makes it highly likely it was shilled, and a FAKE sale. Super Annoying to the true collectors.

Just watched another one of your recent videos and I have most of those cards that I bought I'm way back when. So I'm in on the membership. My only concern/question is this. Why don'y cards from the 60's or 70's sell for more? Is the hobby only about 'what have I done/seen lately"? I have very nice cards of Frank Robinson, Hank Aaron and Tom Seaver that sell for way less then the later releases. Would hate to seen all those who are getting into card collecting/investing lose interest because they lose on the investment side. I don't see any values right now in long term investments. But I love my vintage cards the best.

To answer that question on old cards not selling for more! It's a long term investment :) you tube card influencers can buy ..prop up the value with 500k subscribers and sell them off at the right rate.
100 labron inserts they buy for 5.00 pump it for 6 months and bled them out until it hits 3-500.00 is soo much easier than hoping some 21 year old can afford your 15000.00 eddie mathews rookie!
It's a ticking time bomb! More and more are catching on that its flippers jacking prices not investors! As an investor, what I don't like is ebay does not show price of accepted best offer. I used to use watchcount but it no longer works. It should be illegal for them to hide these prices. Prices on stock and other investments are transparent. It's hard to do my job when I cant see best offer prices. I need that data to see what cards are going for, so I know what to pay and what to price at when I sell...

another great video, people need to be made aware of the scams and scammers! in the last 2 weeks i lost 4 auctions and not long after the loss, i get a email from the seller saying the buyer did not pay, i can get the card if i wanted it, blah blah, four times in just 2 weeks. one notice came 24 hours later, i wish there is a way to report that scammer. yes, sniping, shilling, etc are against ebay terms. thank you for your commitment to the hobby!

I’ve been in a couple of these auctions where there are multiple items listed and ending close to to each other. I usually go after the “lower” one cuz I feel the one that’s higher compared to the others is usually being shill bid by the owner of that card. I Also check the bid history on an auction when it’s about 1-2 hours close to ending, if I see someone with less than 5 feedback bidding , I just completely stay away from that auction...

Another great video 👍...this was an important one..
My advice if you can't bid at the last seconds of an auction: Place a max bid that you are comfortable with.
Example: The Shaq Topps Gold RC. If you see the average sales are between $900 - $1,000 and you're comfortable with paying $989 at most..then set your max bid for $989. If you win great, if not, they'll always be another one on auction.
Even if there was Shill Bidding going on and you still won at $947...ya, it sucks if there was Shill bidding and you might have won it for cheaper if there was no Shill bidding going on, but because you protected your self by putting in a a comfortable max bid you won it at a price you were comfortable with and you didn't over pay.
Another tip: Don't get caught up in FOMO..(Fear Of Missing Out)... Don't put some crazy high max bid just because you really need or want the card bad. They'll always be another auction. You might pay a couple of bucks more or even a couple of bucks less on the next auction...and that's better than over paying by $$$ because you put high max bid because you had FOMO.
    Patience my friends..
    Lessons learned...max bid/bid what you're comfortable.
And don't fall for the FOMO.

Appreciate the insight here Jeff. Thanks again! I got doubled the other day. Guy listed the same lot twice, at almost the same time, with slight variation in the title. Won low, seller switched the lot to the second edited lot with less cards. When i contacted the seller, was immediately aggressive about my inability to read the lot, which is something I specifically do not do!

  • @badheaven22

Yes Ebay frowns on bid sniping and yes sometimes bid sniping has also taken potential buys from myself. However, with Ebay and their inability to protect (lack of care, because it potentially makes them more money) against shill bidding. I say use a sniping service. I will save you money. The other part I would say is always have a pre-determined price you are willing to pay for a card, wait till the last day or few hours for the auction to end and set that bid. I understand that you will be paying more but you need to go in with the understanding that you were going to pay that price anyway. To be honest saving a few bucks on a purchase should be considered a nice treat, because if you go in with the notion that you can save 10 dollars, 100 dollars or 1000 dollars (for a few people) by using a service or waiting to the last second then you are just going to create stress and anxiety for yourself that is unwarranted. Which in my opinion takes away the enjoyment.

Knowing you are an investor and looking for quick flips. It would only make one question as to if you own a couple of the cards you consider “pick of the week” on your channel to bring attention to them and drive up the price for your benefit. I’m not saying you do that but that sounds like Possible manipulation as well and should be addressed also. IMO

Excellent Geoff, this could be a series because there is a very shady undercurrent with card sales and card alterations. Anytime i see PWCC or Probstein I keep on going i would never trust those places. Especially PWCC that place is a joke, the owner claims to want to clean it up but is represented by El Chapos lawyer. The amount of altered cards getting through grading companies makes me think there may be some issues inside the grading companies.

  • @ericperry2032
    @ericperry2032 Před 4 lety +2

A variation of market manipulation occurred (and went out of control) in 2016. Cards were going up drastically, sometimes as much as tenfold within a matter of months. Vintage baseball seemed to be the main segment targeted by this so-called "buyers club" back then. The impact could be seen on eBay, in auction house results, at card shows, etc. Those record-high prices are now a distant memory, though.
The recent run-up on more modern cards has some of the same characteristics. An entire segment of the market is experiencing a meteoric rise in prices. I agree with you that most sales are legitimate. However, there will inevitably come a time when these prices fall. Granted, they will not return to pre-spike levels. Still, they're likely to fall sharply, and rather fast.
A helpful strategy for navigating times like these involves ignoring the "fear of missing out." Look for a segment of the market where things are selling at a relative discount at the moment. Spend wisely and you'll do better than most.

I use a sniping service and love it. A lot of times I missed out on an auction because I was trying to wait until the last minute. Now I can set my max bid in advance without worrying about raising up the price of the item. If I win great, if not, I know that I tried my best at a price I could tolerate

Thank you for addressing this! Seems eBay needs to add a “paid for” feature, among other things! Simple fix is don’t buy any of the cards that are suspicious and teach these scum bags a lesson by sticking them with the cards! Collectors know, “Don’t believe the hype!” I avoid cards from popular discussions! Collect what you love!

Absolutely man, there is so much false hype in this "hobby". A backup guy, who wasn't good enough to start, falls into a starting job because of an injury or trade... All of a sudden here comes HYPE HYPE HYPE HYPE like he's the next Dan Marino or something...Ignore the hype. Do your own research and ignore the idiots. Whenever a CZcamsr starts raving about a guy like that I automatically don't buy that guy. It happens at other levels too... Breakers who rave about a certain set because they're breaking a case of it.. HYPE HYPE HYPE to pull more people into their streams to make them money.. I watch a lot of videos of folks ripping packs because I want to see the cards before I buy a box. Also, then I'll shut up... If your "hobby" is your source of income, it's a business, not a hobby. Trying to build a comaraderie with potential customers by throwing the "hobby" word around is seriously crappy and a lot of people fall for it.

Great content. I think it is up to the buyer to bid realisticly on items. If you really want a card, you can wait until its in your budget. I never bid a price on a card that I feel is too high.
Great tip on waiting until the end to bid. But if a buyer cannot make the end, just set your price on the card that is fare and not something way to high.
I have lost auctions by less then a dollar before but I usually find the same card within my price range soon after.
If you really want a card, create a saved search for it and set alerts. You will find it sooner or later at a good price. Some sellers have buy it now for a realistic price.
