I was a collector along with my brother from 89 to 95 . It’s been 3 years that I got into the hobby again. My brother came home to visit me and I showed him a patch RC auto player used jersey of a player and he has surprised. He told me can you let me know when you are going to rip another hobby box. And I said absolutely. Thanks for the podcasts.

Very cool channel, I use to invest in stocks(ETF's mostly) but I took my non-retirement accounts investment $ and directed it to baseball cards. I use to collect in the early 90's in baseball, basketball and football. I mostly collect baseball now both modern and vintage and like to invest, make money from my investments only to use that profit to buy even more cards.

I can see how these card companies continue to mass produce every new products they release. Are we nearing saturation?! In my opinion, the sports cards industry in comparison to the 1980’s is like in or about the year 1986 or 1987 of collecting. I totally hope am wrong.

Enjoying the channel. I would say in regards to the statement that cards look better nowadays - vast majority of big time collectors disagree with this. Most of them won't touch anything over the last decade since panini monopoly started. Panini is just lazy, the basketball inserts and parallels from the 90's blow them out of the water. Not gonna see anything produced nowadays go for $350,000 like the MJ PMG's.

Just found your channel, very interesting! I sub’d up with the bell! Question sir, how do you feel about the Michael Jordan resell, and investment opportunities for his cards? With the 90’s junk wax era, his card seems to be the only one that I see that keeps selling at higher levels than other 90’s cards being resold! I am a Dallas Cowboys collector and it’s been marked up due to being a Dallas team card! I live in Hawaii and we get hit two, three times! Taxed, on EBay, taxed (2x’s-one by sales tax, second from shipping and cost mark up) so what you folks buy is $100 over in the 48, we pay in Hawaii $150, so my investment is minimal at best! It’s becoming a long term investment but glad I found a channel dedicated to the idea of “investment opportunity” vs hobby! Thank you again, Yong Wilson

I'm going big on Michael Porter Jr too. He has a reasonable chance of beating Zion for rookie of the year. Could be a star on a up and coming good young team. If he stays injured, we'll lose everything. High risk, high reward. Last time I invested big on a play was Giannis. It worked out well.

I'm 39 and collected cards back in the late 80's and early to mid 90's and just as of 4 months ago, got back into it again. As you said, I have my personal collection but now I am looking at it from a business standpoint. I am now actively buying and selling on Ebay and I absolutely love some of the football subscription programs and repack programs out there. There is definitely an opportunity to make some money. In addition, the last several years I have been into sports betting but I am not focusing that time and money on card collecting - I find it to be a lot more rewarding. Looking forward to this series of videos - it's crazy how much I can relate to this video.

You are a great audible speaker, and very astute at investment(s). I wanted to say that, I feel that I am trying to get into the investment side, and if you missed the year(s) you’re not going to make ROI... they’re too much over printing now! I have been back in the card world again n see that now there is variety, and high end cards! Serial #’d cards would be more sought after but as usual the card game is completely the opposite. They want the RPA, but i go back to my beginning, I invest in PSA stuff and rookies but since I missed the 2016 season by 3months which now I’m finding out that my buys are now flat! So I have come to the conclusion that cards are great for flipping/trading but for long/short term investment has to be a RC, or MJ?! It’s all about the quick turn, so investment should be used loosely please. Panini needs to have a competition for better advancement and better cards! Having just Panini for certain sports isn’t working for the consumer. Fantasy Football, Basketball, Baseball has RUINED sports! Everyone is now a player driven game vs team! Just my opinion/like an but we all have one! Zion better have been practicing his jump shot n defense or else Ja will be the better Rookie lol

Love what you are doing here! I've been buying NFL Rookie QB cards for the past month. I stumbled on to the chart that you had in your blog that graded the NFL Rookie QB's and their potential today. I was happy to say that I had already came to a lot of the same conclusions. I had made Will Grier my priority and stocked up on a ton of Rookie Auto/patch cards. Ryan Finley was my #2 and bought a ton of him as well! I felt that Kyler & Haskins didn't offer near the risk reward at their current levels. Fun Stuff, and I think when Grier & Finley finally get the nod to start a game we will see their cards appreciate rapidly. Once again, nice content!

There was a Zion in every other box. Half the boxes had points instead of autos cuz they printed so much they didnt have enough autos to fill all the blasters. All his autos were undrafted and not in the NBA. And buying numbered cards was the best way to invest. Called it on the very first 2019-20 NBA product.

Great Production! I enjoyed your episode and applaud your effort. I think you neglect to stress the reason for liquidity in sports cards is 100% internet and social media. Remove that and it's 1990 and I can't sell my Luka. Today I can buy a box of card and turn card into cash faster than I can get paid for work. Ebay has replaced all valuation with real time global sales data. Facebook has created an underground of card breakers and gamblers that turn cards to cash in minutes. The same is true for gold, silver and other tangible assets on social media. This is the true fire behind the growing Hobby.
I think you are little too optimistic on the hobby as an investment. I think we all tell our wives that so they leave us alone when we buy a few hundred in cardboard. I also don't think much has changed from the 90s to today. Yes, we have #ed cards, but most base cards are trash and manufactures have locked in agreements with sports leagues to control total supply. I too think Zion will have a huge impact on the hobby, buy I fear it could be the start of the bust not boom. Draft Contenders Basketball has over 30 Zion 1/1s. Is there are 30 products and on average lets say 20 /1 per product we are looking at 600 1/1s How many 1/1s were there in the first #ed products?
Lastly, I too thought my friends from youth would be fans of today's cards. Most I have told them about cards, think I'm crazy for spending $100s for box of cards. They point out Stephen Curry is signing autos at every game, so why should a piece of cardboard with his auto be worth $100. Kobe has more autos in the market than any star, but they are still selling for easy $100 on ebay.
Keep up the show, I'll be watching - Ziggy No

      @tewksburydriver8624 Před 4 lety +1

You are spot on. This will not be a good long term investment. Short term 15 years tops, after that values will nose dive. The hobby is losing collectors every year, they are literally dying. The base of the hobby is baby boomers and gen x. Supply will far exceed demand. Certain cards will always have value, but the ridiculous prices and growth we are seeing now is not sustainable.

  • @revimayuyushobbyvlogs5636

I also remember ripping packs open in the late 80's, early 90's. I first got into the hobby by my older brother. I bought the 1989 UD baseball SEALED factory set. Opened it up and was missing the Griffey RC ☹
Luckily the store owner replaced the set ☺
I stopped collecting as well when I saw just how much the market was being flooded.
I got back into the market last year when I bought my godson a box of Soccer cards and saw how delighted he was.
Started investing into Kawhi rookies as soon as he got traded to the Raptors.
Can you imagine at that time his Prizm Rc PSA 10s couldn't sell for $75???

I have 5 questions that I'd like to hear your insight on. 1)What is the best brand for football cards right now? 2) what is the best way to get started again? 3) do you have an episode focusing on the best 10-15 football rookie cards to buy? 4) Which brand/specific card should I get of Patrick Mahomes with the best probability of the highest appreciation/returns? I read an article about the sports trading card industry and it mentioned the market value bottomed out and bounced from a low of around $200mill in 2017. 5) Do you think 2017 was the capitulation point and the sports card market is going to enter a new long term bull market?

I'm sorry but no way in ---- am I using EBay sales to determine a card's value. I grew up in Geoff's era and we are experienced in that regard but as long as Beckett is valuating sports collectibles/ specifically cards, the market correction will settle into Beckett's consistent pricing. What do I look like paying someone $3,000 for a card that's $80 raw, even if it's graded and slab, graded cases accounts for $50 on average per card. The market would/will be better for it by accepting that the regulated prices are already set. Now numbered cards and thier subsets are open for interpretation but these four figure, five figure made up prices is the root of all evil...not money but GREED!

A card that's valued at say $25 will be $25 in the pack even after the pack is ripped open. It doesn't change its market value because someone wants it to be $125. Someone can PAY $125 for it but it's still a $25 card. To your point, auctions are for rare and hard to get items...in this hobby, sure ppl can over pay for a card at an auction. It happens but items usually go through a valuation process prior to the auction with a target sale price. Only time something gets its true market value from a buyer is if it's a true 1 of 1.
