    So glad you brought up cost of fees when selling. Sometimes sellers don’t realize through an eBay transaction for a $100 item. 10% eBay fee, 2.9% PayPal then $3 or 3% shipping. Total 15.9% - net $84 dollars. So if the market price is $100 you need to buy for well under $84 to make $$. In this example you are under water roughly 16% as soon as you buy. (Assuming eBay)

    Great video. One thing I would have added would be to stay within your means in regards to spending. So many people in this hobby (both old and new) spend way more than they can afford and take on unnecessary risk. Don't get caught up in trying to impress or keep up with other collectors/investors on social media. I see so many people purchase amazing cards only to have to sell them shortly afterwards because an emergency happens and they needed the funds. It should go without saying that having to sell quickly due to these types of circumstances rarely nets you the best profit or price for a card due to the fact that selling quickly trumps all regardless of how the market is currently doing.

    This list was really well thought out. I want to comment on your point about focusing on shooters/superstar guards. I think this is very important to beginners. When I first started out investing in cards, I bought alot of my favorite players, who happened to be Power Forwards and Centers. Although lots of them are playing well and panning out, the return compared to guards in that same rookie class is night and day. Consolidation of a collection and what you own is important and focusing on just a few guys has been key for me. Makes things alot easier to navigate too and just like you said, stick to what you know and if you don't know it, learn learn learn before making any investment decisions. Great episode Geoff!

      Zachary Garrett I have (had) same issue! I love RBs cause I played RB in college, HS, pop warner, etc! But in card investment, RC QBs drive the market! Again it’s unfair to the other positions! Baseball is too confusing for me to keep up with so I agree with him about picking one sport! I love football, and will stick with football! Dallas Cowboys also are my favorite team but they have a premium due to the fact “we” DC fans but cards, shirts, anything DC! Thanks good luck

    Adding on #10: New collectors/investors need to know that grading costs money (sometimes A LOT of money) and takes a long time. Thicker cards are tougher to get good grades on. dark border cards are tougher to get good grades on. Ungraded cards can still be safe. They can at times be better investments as well if the buyer themselves feel the card will grade high. The person that took the chance and paid money to send the card in for evaluation is most likely the person that makes the most from the card when taking it to the secondary market. Bottom line of what im trying to say is that new collectors shouldnt be scared of ungraded cards.

    • @SportsCardInvestor
      @SportsCardInvestor  Před 4 lety

      Love the thoughts! I definitely agree with you that ungraded cards can sometimes be safe, and can sometimes be a great investment if you buy them raw and they grade high. But, I think that's a tough thing for a new investor to figure out. New investors struggle to see imperfections in cards, or understand what will grade a 10 vs a 9 vs an 8. So, I think for simplicity and peace of mind, graded cards are a better bet for newer investors.

Prospects I just bought Julio Rodriguez ( J-Rod ), Marco Luciano ( Freaking Stud ) and Bobby Witt Jr. ( great numbers, all American guy ). I saw this firsthand in the dealer showcases at the local flea market I buy at, it took awhile to figure why some players dont move up or there not in the buzz among dealers.

  • @seredicboffin4363
    @seredicboffin4363 Před 4 lety +6

    I will disagree with one of you pieces of advice. No. 10: Buy graded cards whenever possible. Your reasoning for doing this is that cards that aren't graded either a) got a bad grade and were removed from the case or b) aren't in good enough shape to be graded. I think this is really bad advice. I, personally, will not send any card in to be graded. PSA takes waaaayyy too long to return cards. I sent cards in in August through my LCS and still haven't gotten them back in mid-December even though I was promised a 45-businessday turnaround. The market has totally changed on the cards I sent. I absolutely regret sending them. Also, it's a risk to have somebody arbitrarily put a 9 or 10 grade on a card. That subjective grade will either make or break the value of the card. If you get a 9, you just wasted your money because your card is worth the same as if it had never been graded. In my opinion, it's just not worth the risk or the wait to get cards graded. I think there are probably a lot of collectors out there who share these frustrations with PSA and just deal in ungraded cards. If you pass on all cards that are not graded, you are passing on some potentially great cards.

    • @senorlaverg6667
      @senorlaverg6667 Před 4 lety

      Seredic Boffin Yes! I hope the hobby will come to their senses at some point, regarding grading. You are simply paying another human being, with no real specialized training, to give his opinion on your card. THATS IT. PSA is so backlogged that cards are inspected for at most 60 seconds. I don’t think it’s a scam but many people certainly put way too much stock in it.

    • @hungrylikeawolf6738
      @hungrylikeawolf6738 Před 3 lety

      Depends on who the player is as far as a grade 9. It frustrating that everyone thinks only a ten matters. There is no way possible for new collector's to have every card a 10. I do agree with you on how ridiculously long grading takes. I was a kid during the junk wax era and during the baseball strike. My advice is a 9 isn't bad on a hall of famer or rookie card that's 20 years or more older. 10's will one-day be out of reach for many as the hobby grows.

    I must mention, a small update to this video. As the hobby has gracefully expanded into a surge of new young fanatics, some, perhaps most, are not able to purchase 1st year cards of a wanted player because they are too expensive for them. They have turned to buying the next best thing which is second and third year cards of said players wanted. So if you also have some of those keep them handy. They say the hobby is going to plummet, I think the hobby has not even started, keep a look out for a new wave of card enthusiast! @sport card investor

      I am not sure if in 3 years he will have 150 games, he will not win anything with few injuries per year starting from being 19. For me Zion because of that is not a deal. I preger Luka, Tray, Ja Morant and Hachimura.

    That’s not true about the grading... I have very valuable cards that I know will be easy 9 or even 10s but I just don’t like grading cards. I like my cards raw

    I think sports card investors, and I mean a whole wing of them.. including myself would love to hear your takes on different ways of autograph hunting.. mainly thru the mail.. lots of ways to make a great return.. I've said something like this before, not sure if you saw it though.. also, If like to hear more specifically about different players you like, specific card you have and like, and the flips your making or already made... I'm always curious on what specifically which cards you like, love, or just wanna stay away from... also love your break your doing!! Keep doing you! I know I'm in the drawing!! And I love rule numero uno, which is FUN!!!

      Thanks. I personally have never tried autograph hunting through the mail, so I'd have to bring on an expert who has as a guest. I wonder if any of them are out there who watch the show? If so, contact me! I'll do some more episodes and individual players and cards soon.

    Why won' t collector's buy a card of a player that had a great year or accomplish something great that year. Like let say if Baker wins the Superbowl in 2020. Why won't his 2020 card be valuable?
