Princess Margaret has become known as a truly unique member of the Royal Family.
She is known for her daring and flashy fashion sense- which pioneered a new way of presenting as royal. She is also known for the heartbreak that was persistent in her life. From adulterous affairs to divorce and illness, Princess Margaret went through a lot.
Although her childhood was idyllic and harmonious, the death of her father would cause everything to change. Suddenly Margaret’s sister was Queen of England. Leaving her as the spare. This turn of fate would affect Margaret throughout her life.
Princess Margaret, Countess of Snowdon, was very different from the Queen as she was commonly known as a rebellious royal. But despite their natural differences, Princess Margaret always had a close-knit relationship with the Queen throughout her reign.
Princess Margaret is truly one of a kind.

It's ironic that three of the Queens' four children divorced, and two remarried and one to a divorcee who is currently Queen Consort of the UK and called Queen. Margaret deserved better from her family and the government she deserved happiness.

Beautifully done; thanks so much for posting this. I have read that the one serious and ongoing bone of contention between Princess Margaret and her mother was over her education. Certainly the schooling provided by a governess (augmented by special lessons) was nowhere near adequate or fulfilling for anyone with the Princess's lively mind and intelligence. You can't help but wonder how her life might have turned out had she been allowed to go school and get a proper education.

I am a great fan of Princess Margaret. She was so beautiful and regal. Margaret wasn't given the credit she deserved for all the royal duties she took on to assist the Queen. She was an asset to the queen, a very glamourous Princess. She was very popular with the press and the public. If She was allowed to marry the man, she loved then she would of been happy just like the Queen. I think Tony Armstrong Jones was not the right man for her. He did not understand her way of life and was a serial cheater, which lead to a disasters' marriage. If King George was alive, he would have found the right person for his daughter. For such a beautiful Princess her life is nothing short of a tragedy just like the late Princess Diana.

@@helleosborne7168 She could have married Peter Townsend, if she had been willing to give up her titles. She was not willing to give up her privileges as a Princess. I daresay that her attraction for Capt. Townsend was that she was a princess. It wouldn’t have worked out. Margaret was a near-teenager with daddy issues who developed a crush on her father’s handsome equerry. She didn’t have any opportunity to meet many eligible bachelors her own age living as sequestered as she did. Captain Townsend may have been crush worthy, But I find his actions predatory. He was 16 years her senior, old enough to be her father, and her father the king was his boss. Additionally he had a wife and two children. So I blame him for encouraging Margaret to fall in love with him. That never should’ve been on the table. He denied that she was the cause of his marriage break up, but I don’t suppose we will ever know the truth. She was grieving the loss of her father and he was right there in her proximity. He took advantage, even if Margaret could be very pushy. She remained fixated on him for the rest of her life but for his part he swiftly moved on and married a 19 year old Belgian girl practically as soon as she ended the romance. I think the fairytale would’ve ended very quickly If Margaret had renounced everything to marry him and move into a flat in Brussels as an attache’s wife. Peter knew it too.

H is paying that price now. its easy to say when we aren't in that position. She would not have survived outside the RF .. as far as being intelligent goes she was not particularly well educated and not motivated to be (no need to be). the queen pursued education because she realised she needed ot be as the queen. I recall (in the early eighties) hearing my parents fight about the education of myself and my sister where my father was convinced we didn't need an education 'because we would just end up married anyway". Margaret did not have any real skills (besides her looks). As for a relationship.. yes she was in love. He was a married man, years older than her. He was different. She was young and vulnerable. in these days we'd say he was a predator.

No, Princess Margaret could still marry Peter W. Townsend as well as keep her title & royal stipends along with the royal duties.
Her elder sister, i.e. Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II & the Prime Minister R. Anthony Eden agreed to give their blessings - Eden was more sympathetic compared to his predecessor (Winston L. S. Churchill) as he was a divorcé himself like Townsend.
In fact, the British Government proposed to top-up Princess Margaret’s (1952) Civil List yearly allowance of GBP6,000 significantly by an additional GBP9,000 per annum should the marriage with Townsend go ahead - he after all still had to pay child allowance to his ex-wife.
Furthermore, the public by 1955 was generally supportive - people shouted cheers when she passed by that she could “go on [&] do what you want!”
However, Princess Margaret apparently felt the caveats to the proposed marriage, i.e. losing her place as well as those of any of her children if she had any in the line of succession & the civil wedding condition as the Church of England was not to be involved were not worth it.
“I have been aware that, subject to my renouncing my rights of succession, it might have been possible for me to contract a civil marriage.
But, mindful of the Church’s teaching that Christian marriage is indissoluble, and conscious of my duty to the Commonwealth, I have resolved to put these considerations before any others.
I have reached this decision entirely alone, and in doing so I have been strengthened by the unfailing support and devotion of Group Captain Townsend.”
      - Monday, 31st October 1955
What happened in May 1978 was different, i.e. she would not sacrifice her love for the Crown this time & became the first royal to divorce since King Henry VIII.

With regards to Townsend, recently uncovered Government documents reveal that Princess Margaret could have married him and KEPT her royal status and civil list allowance. The ONLY thing the Princess would have lost was her place in the succession to the Throne (at the time Princess Margaret was 3rd in line behind her sister's then 2 children so it was very unlikely she would have succeeded to the crown.) Yes, Princess Margaret’s “love” with Peter W. Townsend was apparently merely an infatuation akin to a schoolgirl crush.
She wrote a letter to the PM R. Anthony Eden from Balmoral less than a week before her 25th birthday: “I am writing to tell you, as far as I can of any personal plans during the next few months ... During the last of August and all September I shall be here at Balmoral, and I have no doubt that during this time - especially on my birthday on August 21st - the press will encourage every sort of speculation about the possibility of my marrying Group Captain Peter Townsend.
I am not going to see him during this time but in October I shall be returning to London, and he will then be taking his annual leave - I do certainly hope to see him while he is there...
But it is only by seeing him in this way that I feel I can properly decide whether I can marry him or not.
At the end of October or early November I very much hope to be in a position to tell you and the other Commonwealth Prime Ministers what I intend to do.
The Queen of course knows I am writing to you about this, but of course no one else does, and as everything is so uncertain I know you will regard it certainly as a confidence.” [Ends]
“This letter rewrites history, because here you’ve got a very determined and confident young woman in control of the situation, telling the Prime Minister that she has not decided and is wavering, which is at odds with what the public was led to believe and certainly with what she told me.
The perception was that she gave up the love of her life for duty and protocol, but this letter sets a question mark over that. It shows that the love, conceivably, was not as strong as it was to begin with. It’s likely she didn’t want anyone other than Eden to know she’d had doubts, because it had gone so far.”

It is nonsense to think that it was not thought that Prncess Elisabeth would one day be Sovereign. Her Uncle, the then Prince of Wales showed absolutely no sign whatsoever of ever marrying or having children. His wife, the Duchess of Windsor, often stated, "My David is not heir conditioned." He had been urged to marry all throughout the 1920s and never did. He preferred married women to ever marrying himself. He preferred Mrs Dudley-Ward and Thelma, Lady Furness and later Wallis Simpson to any single eligible woman. It is said a severe cases of mumps that rendered him sterile. He was born in 1894 and became King in 1936. He showed no sign of marrying and haviung children. Queen Elizabeth II was 10 when her Uncle became King. There were to be no children from the Duke of Windsor. The late Queen Mother would also have no further children due to both her daughters being born via ceasarean section. That is why there was never any doubt that Princess Elizabeth would not be Queen.

I do think Margaret got to have more fun with her life than her sister the Queen or Queen Mother. I can't imagine how hard it would have been for me to remain stoic in public when I lost my parents or 4 of my siblings. Being Queen is not a job most of us could handle. When they were young & would squabble like any other siblings, I think too many forget how much younger Margaret was than her sister. My baby sister was spoiled rotten & a pita but I loved her dearly.

Princess Margaret treated people badly. There was some rule that people couldn't leave a table or go to bed until the royal family member left. She would keep people waiting until 4 am before she'd leave and they would stay up as late as she did because of that ridiculous rule. They could have broke the rule, but they didn't because of some misguided loyalty to a hierarchy. Captain Townsend first saw Princess Margaret when she was 14 or 15 similar to Prince Philip meeting Queen Elizabeth when she was about 13. Captain Townsend went on to marry a girl about 30 years younger than himself that he meet when she was 17 or 18. The girl was 1 or 2 years younger than Margaret. When Townsend meet Margaret, he was already married and had children. Princess Margaret was selfish and arrogant. She enjoyed holding her royal status over people and making them bow to her. She once made a French ambassador clean stains off her dress when he accidently spilt sauce on her dress at a dinner party.

Harry is 6th in line.... he has to outlive charles, William, and Williams 3 children... it's highly unlikely Harry will ever sit on the throne. I'm sure his family at this rate will force him to give up his titles as he is constantly blasting them.

Always been an admirer of the Queen, to the extent that we know her or the Institution she was head of. On the other hand, I have never really cared for Margaret. I believe her to have been very narcissistic and needy of attention, adoration and status. I believe her to be less enigmatic, but more calculating, knowing her best shot was to stay near the Queen inspite of her own intense envy. I do sincerely hope that Margaret came to have a real faith in GOD and is in peace and contentment.

Always wondered when I’ve heard over many years the complaints by Margaret that she didn’t get the education her sister got, why once she was older she didn’t get tutors and take courses to upgrade, she certainly had the time, never had a job of any kind. It leads you to think she maybe didn’t want to because she wasn’t very smart, just liked to complain. What an unhappy person she seems to have been, a horrendous snob, rude and cruel is what I’ve heard.

@hazelpearson7807, unlike you Princess Margaret was a very beautiful, smart woman, patron of hundreds of charities, mother of two children who unlike you are very well brought up by their mother, and leading worthwhile lives, she was also a great support and confidant of her sister Elizabeth II. As patron of many charities she didn’t have time to ‘upgrade’ or go to night school etc. You are the stupido, who finds it necessary to diss a long dead woman you did not know, was not your equal because of what ‘you heard’ from the gutter press. I watched a documentary about her. It didn't paint her in a good light. She constantly expected everyone to pay her way. She was to fly on first class even though she had a regular ticket. One family provided many lobster for her dinner party but never paid for it. I guess when you're a princess, you expect this but it's wrong to expect it from people who can't afford it.
