Arguably the best flutist in the world, today. No, I'm not dismissing Bouriakov nor Jasmine Choi. His command (articulation) is unbelievable. It's a sin that someone should be able to play as well as he. Galway? Step aside, you've been replaced.
J. Galway is getting old. His sound is edgy and thin now compared with his glory days, even he plays with a 80000 dollars flute, he is not what he used to be anymore. It happened the same with J P. Rampal...
If you think that Jasmine is one of the best flutists nowadays, you just don't know a thing about flute hahaha
I've said this on previous replies : he has incredible command of the his flute. Only one thing left: He needs to mollify the C-3 register (high C) so that his playing doesn't make our ears bleed. This CAN be accomplished on a French (open hole) flute. It's a difficult technique -- but can be accomplished. Also I noticed that unlike Jasmine Choi and Paula Robison, Paolo reads from sheet music. I would assume that he knows --- or should should know any recital composition by heart. Other than that, I stand on what I say --- he is (arguably) the best flutist in the world, today.
I read what you wrote Jim. I guess you were talking about the fourth higher C of the flute. Did you? On a b footjoint flute that tone is harder to get and to sustain. On a c footjoint flute is easier to play and it tends to sound more open and not like an ugly shout but it is practice and to own a good handcrafted flute too with an excellent headjoint. Anyway the gizmo key was invented...but in a uncomfortable position for fast passages, though it helps a lot if you want to stay there enjoing that tone for a while. (I mean for a projection a longer period of time ), but like on almost ANY instrument, the extreme limits usually don't sound very well (i mean warm soft, etc) That high c is there on the flute to be played when needed but it is a more piccolo register tone. I'm agreed with you that playing with a sheet before your eyes is distracting but i think he plays passionately though moving his body so much from side to side, to up and down, i doesn't help but i insist that it is his feeling and his passion. His soul.
