Good information and well explained. I worked as a bacteriologist. And had aquariums all my life. The easiest way to get your tank stated with no fuss. Start clean, good aeration, and what I always did with a virgin tank was put catfish in first. They are very hardy and will get the cycle started. Most of my tanks never got cleaned, that is completely emptied and started fresh. And many were set up for years at a time. That nice slime layer in your filter is the good stuff. I never got rid of it, just transferred to the new filter element when adding water of replacing the element.
LOVE the dogs in the background...DA NEVER missed a beat. Great Job, my brother. Interesting strategy of "reusing" filter media cleaning water (13:50). Never really considered that. Hmmmm, me thinks an experiment is ripe for the picking.....
I only use the up light when needed. Algae bloom, disease etc. I rarely use the up light. It’s a nice feature. But if you have plenty of beneficial bacteria it should take care of the tank.
You should only use purigen after your tank is established and through the nitrogen cycle. I have over 15 Cory’s in there and catfish are very dirty fish. Keeping dirty fish can feed the cycle. But you gave me a possible new video topic! Thanks dude! I will give you full credit if I do decide to use it as a topic
Actually they do. Fish will urinate through their gills or through a "urinary pore." The latter eliminates urine that has been filtered via the kidneys. ( although not kidney shape) Saltwater fish will excrete most urine through the gills, while freshwater fish do so through the urinary pore.
Thank you for watching. You can buy bacteria in a bottle. But technically adding more surface area will “feed” the bacteria. I.E. cause more to grow. I add cermedia bio balls and gems to the tank for more surface area to sprout more beneficial bacteria.
@@hakman239 if you look at my response it says “feed i.e. grow”. Meaning the more surface area there is the more bacteria will grow. In this context/analogy I’m using feed as grow. You wouldn’t put more ammonia in an established tank to make more beneficial bacteria grow. You add more surface area. Thanks for watching.
Thank you

Thanks lol thanks for watching. Unfortunately all of my dogs have passed away. I had 3 chows and a cane corso.
Very useful and accurate information. Keep it up.
Thank you very much and thanks for watching
Anyone that keeps Discus with angelfish is alright in my book!

Don’t put chemical filtration in your pre filter
Seachem highly recommends you place your purigen before any filtration. Thanks for watching!
What’s feeding the good bacteria if you are taking out it’s food source in the first stage of filtration?

What do you feed the beneficial bacteria. Anyway nice explanation.
