Sun Sun vs Fluval FX6

  • This is a video why I chose a SunSun 702b filter over the Fluval FX6. #5. Space! The FX6 is a large filter! It’s just as big or bigger than some pond filters. And if you’re not making your own aquarium stand. (Which I highly recommend you do) Than its going to take up a lot of room.
#4 Too much flow! Tis is a good thing if you have Guppies, Mollies, or Platy’s. They love playing in the current. But I have Angels and Discus and they don’t like a lot of current. Also, High flow pumps means it will blow the food around too fast and (and suck it up) and make it harder for your fish to eat.
#3 The Corrugated Tubing! This one is two fold. First, the tubing is black plastic. Which means you can never know how clean or dirty the hoses are. You’ll also never get the ridges completely clean. The solution is to change them out. But should I really have to? Or should Fluval provide a better hose. Second, the crinkles are a weak point of any corrugated hose. They will fail! Not if its when? Again you’re only as strong as your weakest link!
#2 Price is what you Pay, Value is what you get. When the FX6 first came out it was $330. Prices have come down since. But for the $330 for the FX6. I was able to get 2 Eheim Pre-filter, 2 SunSun 603b, and 2 SunSun 702b filters all for $242.
#1 It’s nothing but an over-sized sponge filter! Too much mechanical filtration and not enough biological filtration. Biological filtration is far more important than mechanical filtration! The trays for the chemical and biological filtration are too small. In my AquaClear 70 I used to cut the AquaClear filter in half to make more room for biological media. In my two SunSuns I have 4 liters of Seachem Matrix, two 11.74 oz Chemi-Pure Elite (one in each canisters) and 250ml’s of Seachem’s Purigen.
In conclusion, I’m not saying the Fluval FX6 is bad filter. I’m saying it doesn’t fit my needs and like all filters there is some design flaws. Except for the AquaClear filters. They are pretty close to perfect as you can get which are made by the same company that makes Fluval FX6’s. Hagen. These are just my opinions on the FX6 and I’m not saying I wouldn’t buy one if I had the right fish (Guppies, Mollies, and Platy’s) and replace of course replace the hoses. So let me know with what you think or what your set up is or what set up works best for you. I know I will get a lot of hate from the FX6 community. But that’s the best thing about opinions there subjective.

Just FYI foam is one of the best biological filter media if you don't overclean it. Most people don't know that, they think the FX6 performance is due to the high flow rate, but it's actually the fact that this canister filter forces you to use lots of foam by design.

    P.s my sit up : 3 tanks plum together with a 90gal sump/My biological filtration , 1-FX4 & 4-FX6 mechanical filtration (“ sponge filters with horsepower”) & 4 Aqua clear 50 for surface agitation + 2 UV sterilizer for diseases ...

That is a great idea to plum all three together. More filtration means more biological media. More biological media means less issues and a cleaner tank! Thanks for watching and the comments!

FX6 & FX4 fanboy but the best canister filter in the world is ADA ( if cost is no problem)

Wow. You choose a sun sun over the worlds best fluval.

😂 don’t get me wrong I love Fluval and the FX6. But when it comes to value and customization. The sun sun is better for me. I can buy 3 sun sun canister filters to one fx6. And now I have 6 trays for a bunch of media and uv lights as well. Now the quality and build (plastic used to make the filter) is far much better on the fx6. I love the petcock valve on the fx6 too! My only 2 complaints about the fx6 is the black tubing and all the mechanical filtration. Stay tuned for a new product review. I just ordered a new canister filter. (Not a SunSun or Fluval)

I feel the same way about life. I’m always moving spiders and grasshoppers and baby mice out of the houses we build on the job sites. I feel we are in their space and taking their space so we should at least help them get out of harms way.

I'm deciding on whether i buy an FX6 for my 52 gallon (240 litre) tank of cichlids here in the UK. I was worried the flow will be too much for my sized tank?

It's better to use 2 smaller canister filters instead of a single large one. If one breaks you have the other one working, your fish survive.

With all that said you can adjust the flow not Downing your choice i tried those filters they didn't keep my tank as clear as my fx4.

Thanks for watching and the feedback. That’s interesting it didn’t keep your tank clear? But full disclosure I am running 2 704b’s with poly-fil and Seachems Purigen in one tray Chemi-Pure Elite with more poli-fil in the second tray and Seachems matrix in the third. I have replaced both because of a leaking o-ring. But 5 good years was well worth it. I know have 2 Sicce Whale 350’s on that tank.

  • @Jonerod
    @Jonerod Před 2 lety

I don’t use fine poly fill, I feel it is a waste of space and lowers capacity. I use sponges and bio media and it works fine.-!: I have a HOb with white media cartridge which does polish but it’s not in the canister

    • @divineaquariums2774

In an hob I agree. But I can't say I agree with you on canisters or a filter like Sicce's Shark. In my Sicce Shark that is all I use. I stuff the crap out of that shark. As for the canister I place my carbon bags (usually 2 bags of chemipure elite) I still use a coarse and medium sponge with biomedia. Butone key point is the cost of buying it in bulk at Walmart instead of the same bag of filter floss that cost the same and has a quarter of the product just because it says aquarium on it. Thanks for watching.

Got a great quote for you " Cheap filters ain't good & good filters ain't cheap " 🌞🌞 is not worthy of this comparison and hopefully one day you will have had enough of 🌞🌞 and .....?
