  • Antje's spectacular tiny house on wheels is modern, spacious and filled with character and charm. Made from SIPs (structurally insulated panels) and off-the-grid ready, there's certainly no compromise here in terms of space, or design.

    One neat idea I came up with when designing small spaces and wanting a bath in the bathroom and has stairs: just put the bath under the stairs.
    The tall side of the bath can be used as a shower, but the other half, you don't _really_ need a lot of vertical space, so it still works well as a bath.
    It would be doable in this space.
    Another few ideas I had was putting a water tank above that space. Or storage.
    In fact, you can even put the corner of the bath on the underside corner of the kitchen, that awkward place where you'd normally have a really long cupboard or some fancy diagonally opening doors or such.
    Baths can work really well in small spaces if you think a little creatively.

    Such a unique layout of the house! Great kitchen space, compartmentalised zones..
    First tiny house I saw that has bathroom door tucked at the end of the partition and not in the centre, which I was hoping to find in so many other videos. This is how it should be when you have kitchen stove and compost T sitting just a couple of feet apart from each other!

    Seen alot of tiny house videos, and this one is basically my favorite. The simplicity, the openness, the layout and (for some strange reason), the stairs - and the upstairs windows... just all seem to make sense. If I had a tiny house, I'd model it after this one.
    The only thing that would be different (well, four things): A larger stovetop. A bit of a deck/porch (very simple, flat space - could be built onsite and then taken apart for moving), and (why not?) maybe a ladder up to a rooftop sitting area - always a temptation with a nice, flat roof - the solar panels only take up half or less of the space... Oh, and some shelving for clothes - could be very skinny shelves tucked away somewhere - but would not like to get dressed every day out of boxes or drawers...
    Again - just about my favorite.
    Oh - one more thing. The couch area could do triple-duty and still look about the same - couch, full-size guest bed unit (just pull out a section from underneath and put cushions for sleeping - or fold down the back part) -and maybe a table that pulls out or folds down with various size choices from one person to dining-room size. And pullout benches. It could all be done in a very subtle way with the existing couch-footprint.
    All comments aside, it is just super-beautiful exactly the way it is - bravo to Antje....

      (A few years later...) I believe what she has done is exploit a sort of loophole in NZ where if the house is not integrated with the chassis, but instead can be de-coupled, then the house is treated as a carried load rather than a trailer. Normally the maximum width of a 'light simple trailer' (can be used on a standard driving licence) is 2.55 m (~8 1/3'), which can be a tight fit on many NZ roads, but oversized loads are permitted to be up to 3.1 m (~10 1/6') without requiring a pilot vehicle, although there are some restrictions and requirements such as not being able to drive in major urban areas during peak traffic hours.

    Very cool...I would have loved to learn more about the technical specs of her solar and battery setup that allows her to run such high wattage appliances such as wash machine and oven. Also, is she plugged in to a well for water supply and some sort of septic system for drainage of her shower, sink and wash machine water? If not, how does she get rid of her waste water? Love your videos, but wish you would at least spend a few moments discussing these "nuts and bolts" type issues that could help others figure out what is technically feasible with a tiny house.

    • @NZVideoGuy
      @NZVideoGuy Před 7 lety +2

      I think you'll find that the current draw from the oven will be very high, especially when it's converted into a 12v or 24v system. The amperage draw will be enormous. She said she has to be very careful when she uses it. The batteries will be taking a hammering. The washing machine doesn't use anywhere near as much power. She did mentioned that she's using mains water from the house. A very nice build. Good to see the Separett toilet too.

    • @mattwoodproperty
      @mattwoodproperty Před 7 lety +3

      I wouldn't imagine the washing machine is too much of a problem, as a single woman, would she use it more than every other day? I doubt it. Maybe she uses the oven to cook one large meal like a lasagne, then use it as four/five portions. The panels look to be a metre by 1.5 mtr, so it's safe to assume she's got at 1500/2000w at her disposal. That should produce enough for anyone I would av thought.

    Hey Bryce, I've been watching your videos for quite a while now but I was wondering, is anyone surprised that you're building a tiny house when they meet you a realise you're a giant. How tall are you and has your height affected the design of you own house much?

    • @livingbig
      @livingbig  Před 7 lety +87

      haha. Yeah! I think I'm the last person that anyone would expect to build a tiny house. I'm about 6.4, so it certainly has affected the design for my own home. In saying that, I'm comfortable in the vast majority of places that I visit, so long as the area under the loft space is high enough for me to stand up straight!

      Bryce, I'm really excited for that one future video where you conduct a tour of your own tiny house! That would be lovely and entertaining to watch, kind of summing-up all your past experience with tiny homes.
      Also, interviewing and being interviewed at the same time :P

    Every now and then I rewatch some of my favorites of your Tiny House tours, and this remains one of my favorites. The simplicity, practicality and personalization of the build remind me how adaptable tiny houses can be. There's so much to admire about this one in particular. It makes me so happy your 'library' is available. Thanks.

    Hi, I am from India and I can really see the tiny house movement as a solution to many of the housing issues especially those faced by young couples who are caught in the home loan and rent debt trap. I hope that the government eases some of the land / housing policies to make way for this movement
