- frequently asked question is what is the difference between hvlp and hte and which should i buy? well ill leave the buying decision up to you, but i will explain some key bullet points to ease the confusion and help make the best buying decision you can for your project. they all spray paint but they all spray differently with different results so to achieve the best results i came up with this video.

I'm your newest sub! Thank you for the education you're giving me. I've been shooting nitrocellulose lacquer on the guitars I make for twenty years, kind of making it up as I go along, getting decent but not perfect finishes... I've learned more from watching a few of your videos in two days than I have in years of trial and error. Especially regarding the equipment. I just bought a Spectrum Black Widow HTE gun today, and got it set up and ready. I'm going to go live with it tomorrow morning. It is a whole new category for me. Thanks for guiding me through it! When I started painting, HVLP was just starting.. the old guys training me used to use Devilbiss JG8 conventional siphon feed. My first gun which I still use today was a SATA jet nr95. It's next to impossible to get a rebuild kit and I'm thinking there is better out there. Although I am here because I just bought an HTE. Had no idea what that means.

Nice comparison, but a demo of each with the same paint would have been icing on the cake.
I painted my car my metallic base and cleared it with the Black Widow HTE and the results are basically amazing. Zero orange peel no runs, smooth finish. You cannot tell the car was even re painted, it came out almost perfect. For the price under two hundred dollars worth every penny.

I am the head painter at our shop spraying PPG DBC... I wanted to try the 1.3 out of the blue this morning on blending a BMW hood in the A90 code color... 1st thing i did was to test spray pattern at 8" distance & pattern was OK (Very similar to the Sata 5500x in the "I"/Iwata pattern).. This gun really did struggle with transfer in order to achieve a closed/wet coat.. Over a wet bed of DBC500 blender, It also struggled with the blending as well as having to work it a little bit extra in order to execute the effect/orientation coat...... The gun just felt like it would do better for clear . Again it was a process to work the gun with tight 75% overlapping done at 6" above the surface. Follow up 2nd coat of clear was done in the same manner at 6" & overlap ONLY at a slower speed.... I did get a passable finish from it that an Insurance company wouldn't complain about paying for but it is a slow gun when compared to My Sata 4000 & 5000s that are my Go to's for metallics & I Clear with the Super Nova as well.... I was also doing a blend on A 2018 F150 RR tricoat color & I had ZERO confidence to attempt to use the Black Widow on that but, I might have used it to apply the ruby tinted midcoat of DC400 - if that says anything..................
I will say that compared to my Devilbiss prolite and Devilbiss plus the widow does struggle a bit to put it on wet in comparison to my higher end guns, takes an extra pass or two with the widow, it also seems to do better with medium solids clear than high solids clear in my opinion , perhaps a little reducer might help in getting the clear to flow out better. As far as metallics go it does ok I wouldn’t say it’s the best for metallics but again it’s really not designed for metallic base. I Agree with ya on the i pattern similar to the sata nice narrow elongated pattern. I have yet to compare it side by side to a genuine sata but in my opinion in the price point that it’s in most garage painters and diyers like myself , will find it well suited enough to achieve a half decent garage paint job. 🤙🏻

Thanks for the clarification. I have used a Sata hvlp for years for both base and clearcoat. I am going to get a black widow HTE and try it with the clearcoat
It’s quite a bit slower than the original Sata, and also I have not gave HS clearcoat a try with it, only MS clears
I can tell you all that if you are a hobbyist, or weekend warrior and dont have a massive shop compressor, you wont be happy with an HVLP gun! It means high volume low pressure. You have to have a massive amount of air volume to atomize the paint correctly at the tip. You wont achieve that with most home compressors. Being in a shop environment, you can clear out a panel with HVLP gun and get great results, because of the massive amount of air volume running our shop. Very different going from booth to a garage. You really have to get your technique down and adjust on the fly, even with the same gun!
Also, we dont have to be HVLP compliant, we just have to be compliant. Meaning transfer efficiency over a certain threshold. HVLP guns are "compliant" but other guns dont have to meet those exact numbers. Just have to be within a certain percentage to be "compliant".

Thats the exact comment i hear constantly! Needing lots of air has nothing to do with pressure. Its about volume! HVLP needs high volumes of air, capacity wise,not pressures. Its kist the design of the guns. The guns that use to run around 50psi were not HVLP.

Im in Canada aswell! I dont apply my base with an HVLP, but the transfer efficiency is probably just as good.
Conventional is not the devil.. not sure why many don't understand that there's several conventional guns that don't require high pressure. In fact, they can be ran with a small compressor. LVLP is a horse of another color.. they'll do the same but don't put out enough paint to go past panel work. The EPA simply got it wrong, but I suppose there's an ulterior motive behind the push towards HVLP.... like trying to hinder the DIYer

As I mentioned in your other video, I've sprayed everything with the 1.3 HTE and it did great. I'm talking about everything from primer to candy with micro flake and clear!! You're pushing it with the micro flake but she did not clog up at all!

I used to paint cars as a hobbyist with good results. I used to use a knockoff Bink's Model 7 but the last time I painted with it, I used fisheye eliminator. I was told once I used the stuff the gun was contaminated, and I'd need the fisheye eliminator to use the gun from there on.
I haven't painted a car in at least 20 years and was planning on using a new Devilbiss Finish Line HVLP gun or a new AEROPRO HVLP SPRAY GUN G6600 HVLP gun! I also have a Bink's 2001 siphon feed gun with an agitator cup that is new but has been in storage since the 1980's. I'm going to spray my Cutlass 442 in NOS PPG Duracryl-Acrylic lacquer Viking Blue metallic topped with High Performance Clear like I used to. Some on forums say that HTLV won't do a good job on metallics. One comment says that the Model 7 isn't contaminated. Not sure what to do. Every comment gets this old man more confused....LOL! I was wondering about using one of the HTLV guns for the color and then get a black widow for the clear. All I want is to get this one last car done and that's it. I do like that the HTLV and HTE guns will create less fog in the air.

The last time I painted anything there were only the standard siphon-feed guns Now from what you have said I'm gonna purchase an HVLP and an HTE. The one question I have for you is which gun would be best to use for rubberized undercoating? Maybe that can be your next Video. Thanks for the information on the new guns!

I understand air flow is a key factor, not just PSI. Air flow is measured in CFM and typically HVLP require minimum 14 CFM at the gun, remembering there are losses in flow between the compressor tank and the gun. CFM (FAD) is generally third less than CFM (Displacement), if your air compressor is advertised as 10 CFM (displacement), the Free Air Delivery (FAD) is probably around 6.6 CFM. FAD is "free air delivery" and is the volume of air actually discharged. So my 14 CFM compressor will never be better than 9-10 FAD at the gun and that regulator valves, hoses, water separators and their fittings all need to be high CFM rated. For example I changed my 8mm or 1/4” hose to 3/8” or 10mm and with high flow fittings. I also changed the separator to 110 CFM at 60 PSI to ensure it wasn’t choking the air CFM delivery. I even removed the little pressure gauge at the gun and only rely on the gauge at the tank. So many variables to consider that matching gun spec to your system CFM is paramount. Hope that helps.
The acronyms refer to air. High volume ( 12-18 CFM) while at low pressure 10:30 and those usually reach for no more than 20 psi. Compliant/HTE maintain relatively decent CFM numbers that are much lower than HVLP (8-12 CFM) while using more pressure (18-32 psi). LVLP of course are usually lower across the board, but at a cost of smaller fans and less fluid output...meaning a much slower gun. As far as cap pressures... HVLP & Compliant/HTE generally have similiar cap pressures but arrive at it in different ways which does make a difference. I beg to differ though on the latter not being good at metallics. The cap prsssure doesnt really determine that. The design in fan shape and atomization have more to do with that and theres several compliant gun examples that perform well on metallic base
a auto refinisher can use either of them and get Good results, I have been for 48 years my preference its a HTE for clears 2k & Acrylics next HVLP for 2k base and colours Acrylics and all primers my hobby is making guitars when I'm not painting cars where i use a bit of nitrocellulose which i use HVLP and I only use either Iwata and DeVilbiss guns, my most expensive guns are HTE and I keep for only clears I'm not a SATA fan I have about 25-30 guns and as many I use for parts, good vlog you covered most things

I have one question I just bought a Chinese knock off gun to use at our farm it’s a green 1000 pro DeWabiss what can you tell me about this gun it’s made by Weta in China it has a 1.3 tip and they brag about it’s good to atomization what did they copy it from is it a hybrid between Sata and a DeVilbiss. Please help me out I think you’re pretty good on Judging paint guns what is this gun good for paining clear primer base sealer?
I’ve purchased two sprayguns from dewabiss , and both seemed to have decent quality features, in some cases however they seemed to be poor quality control on the air cap, a few defective air caps . It’s really a hit or miss with these sprayguns unfortunately , but both sprayguns conclusively sprayed decent enough to achieve a good finish, which I was rather surprised with .
there's a 4th type of spray gun LVLP, low volume low pressure guns work good for the hobbyist which usually have smaller compressors that can't sustain the air volume needed by HVLP guns!!!

That's a really good question. I am thinking of refinishing my cabinets.
I've painted Automotive since the 90s.
I would think that there is a gun out there with a big tip 1.7-2.5 because of the fact that interior home paints seem to be thicker.
That's just a guess I'm sure the guy that made this video would know way more than me or a guy who paints kitchen cabinets🤷♂️

Why use hvlp for base coat if it leaves orange peel? I am a DIY and I plan on painting my 1990 ZR-1, I have a conventional spray gun and have painted a car and it turned out good. If you were in my position which gun would you use?

Hvlp leaves less overspray, faster color coverage but struggles with finishing do to smaller air compressor air volume. It needs a high amount of air flow to work efficiently

Between HVLP, LVLP, LVMP, Conventional, and HTE which is best to spray thicker material without excessive thinning?
HVLP with a larger needle like 1.8 or 2.0 for really thick stuff

Well, the Black Widows, and other similiar guns, are knockoffs of the Sata design
Just A Mechanic sprays just a good if u know what ur doing and have some experience

If you’re painting a whole car you need at least a 60 gallon compressor, cheapest 60 gallon compressor I’ve seen is a craftsman for $1000, a HTE spectrum gun at Harbor freight is between $125 and $150 and that’s just for a middle of the road gun.

Depends on the recommended tip size for the epoxy primer but in general it should be fine.
TO EACH THIER OWN....I BOUGHT A BINKS #7 BACK IN THE 70's AND I'm STILL USE'n IT TO DAY..I GET THE SAME RESULTS WITH IT AS I DO WITH MY SATA & DeVILBISS GRAVITY GUNS ......JUST DEPENDS ON HOW YOU SET E'm UP.

HTE SPECTRUM IS GOOD I HAVE IT FOR CLEAR
These EPA rules are very stringent. If you want to look it up you’d need to read the National Emissions Standards for Hazardous Air Pollutants (NESHAP). He is 100% correct on the diy painters not being regulated by the EPA but you need to check out your state and local rules as well, some of them are more restrictive than the EPA.

How is the same gun both in HTE and HVLP different? Is it in the pin and orifice? for example I have a Harbor Freight Black Widow which is HVLP. Would changing the pin and orifice with jet assembly make it an HTE gun then? I am getting ready to order a different orifice size end cap is why my question here.. Where exactly is the difference occuring between the two?
There are cap difference but also internal machined gun body changes too which cannot be changed. Also the hvlp cap will not interchange between hvlp and hte on that gun

Thanks, great video. I went out and purchased a 1.3 HTE and a 1.7 HVLP for my restoration project going from Metal to clear. I think I’ll need a gun with a 2.0 or greater to spray a high build primer, is that the case? If so, which sub $75 gun do you recommend for spraying high build?
Not in all cases , you could reduce the primer a bit to make it easier to spray out , 1.7 tip or a larger tip would be a good idea

There are some decent guns through Autobody Supermarket that have a 2.5 tip, but that's real big and something I'd typically use for a spray poly instead of a typical primer. Cheap too, around 60-80 bucks. I've put primer through the 1.7 help without an issue, and in fact, I recently had a buddy who is a very high end painter suggest spraying my primer mixed as a sealer through my base gun 1.3. It worked great.

All depends on your circumstance. Hte for finishing , hvlp for some bases and primers, LVLP for low volume compressors

Sata rp is an HTE with reduced pressure , but still has a cap pressure higher than 10psi

Two guns isn’t needed you could get away with just one but , do make sure you clean out all pearls mica before going to the next coating or different jobs

Hey got a quick question how much air pressure would u use on the black widow I'm using 30 psi and getting a lil orange peel
28-31 psi is the range I spray at with the widow. How thick is the paint?

reduce the clear 10%, the widow struggles a bit with high solids clear,

To me there all the same . The key to any paint job is your body work. Let’s say I do a some mediocre bodywork and use a $800 gun . How do you think my Paint job is going to look?. Then I do super beautiful body work and I use a $30 gun. How do you think my paint jobs going to look?

Where does LVLP come in
Lvlp are generally more for small air compressors, these guns require much less cfm then the others, smaller fan pattern , less material usage and a bit slower gun but like I said good for small air compressors and at home spraying
@@Mechaniclyfe I was going ask the same question, yes they are advertised for people needing lower air demands like the home gamer with a smaller compressor, and I'd imagine that they are still required to get the 65% transfer efficiency in the USA, but do they spray closer to an HVLP or HTE?

So basically smaller droplets for HTE.
I've been using "modern" conventional guns lately, and I get good results with 17-20psi at the cap...

Yeah those aren’t bad , I used to have the finex fx1000 mini gun worked well

Keysta Stanciel hvlps can be used in finishing when high volume compressors is used
