I like my Iwata ls400 supernova. Mainly because I'm a aircraft mechanic but I do a lot of small parts painting on aircraft parts hanging on racks. We shoot single stage urethane paints. With Sherman Williams mil spec and super Koropon as a primer. The gun lays Koropon wonderfully and when I have to needle down to shoot inside bores and such it works wonderfully. I like my hvlp gun because it blows the small little dainty parts around less when you're trying to hold them still with safety wire. HVLP guns serve their purpose but they aren't for everyone. The only issue I ever seem to have a problem with is trying to get it to lay mil spec primer nicely.

HVLP guns caused a lot of trouble for me for many years, mostly due to a smaller air compressor. I prefer RP technology as well. For less experienced painters and DIY guys it's RP guns all the way. My advice to them is get a good RP gun and learn to mix up just enough material to minimize waste. This is where you have the most control over overall efficiency until you have mastered the trade. I wish I had watched this vid 20yrs ago ! Thanks Gunman ! 👍
Hi. good info thanks! what would you recommend for using on a construction site (houses and Appts) ? for undercoating (With oil based U Coat) frames,doors skirtings spindles and hand-rails ? I would like to put a finish coat on but am not sure if it would be a 'good enough finish' thank you in advance

I wanted to point out that your advice here not to get HVLP guns for home use should be aimed more at those who may be considering spraying a car or larger objects.
If you consider the midi and mini size guns for smaller projects this doesn't apply. I have a small SIP T3/25D compressor at my home that is only 25 Ltr = 5.5 Gallon and runs at about 5.5 CFM. This is fine for the smaller HVLP guns like the A.N.I. R150 and R160 that I have. ( I bought the A.N.I. guns from Sprayguns Direct after your reviews and demonstrations ). I also have Walcom Slim STM's and SATA Minijets. These are all HVLP. They lay the paint and clear on like glass and don't require a large compressor. For the home user that don't need to spray large objects like a complete car any of these would be fine.
I have found the smaller Walcom, A.N.I. and SATA Minijets to be very versatile and as you know from your demo's with the A.N.I. midi size guns they can do car panels and give pro results if you know what you are doing, as you do.
I agree with you regarding the full size guns. I have a Devilbiss GTI suction fed and a SATA LM2000B RP that I use with an old Ingersol Rand belt drive compressor that runs at about 15 CFM. Works great with the larger guns. Like you, for the larger guns I prefer the feel of the RP cap for the SATA LM and the Transtech cap for the GTI. I do have the HVLP caps for both but I definitely prefer the feel and finish I get with the RP and the Transtech. I don't see that there is much of an advantage with compressor requirements as setups for both guns require the around the same level of air displacement.
If I were to choose to keep one compressor for spraying it would be the Ingersol Rand. I got the smaller compressor as it is portable and I sometimes use it with my airtools around the home. It was a bonus that it could drive the smaller spray guns without the compressor straining.

From one pro painter to another my friend love your vids u break them down for everyone that doesn’t quite pay attention to understand an catch before jumping in it I’ve seen a lot of ppl make those mistakes watching vids thinking no big deal jump in it an mess shit up bad so it’s nice to see someone that actually knows what they’re talking about giving ppl tips on how not to blow there money keep up the work bro would love to hook up with ya if you in the US sometime an throw down some paint an create a color or two for a nice project my hat off to ya bro great work great videos

gunman, I am not a professional spray painter, I do some spraying based on your teaching and recommendations, i bought one of the cheap devil/biss spray guns, as i see it i could'nt care less what they call the spray guns, late for dinner will do, as all i do is put paint in one end and it comes out the other and it gives an excellent finish.
The quality of finish I get along with the ease of use and clean up more than make up for the amount of paint I use. I will never put my Binks Model-7 down. Thanks.
Size tip it come with ? Do they offer different size tips for it ,?? Do u base coat or CC with the Binks,? Is that a gravity or suct. Fed ? What's the price for it ?
@@dewaynebraley2820 They usually come with a medium tip good for lacquers, primers, epoxies, urethanes and clear coats. There are 3 tip sizes good for everything from shellacs up to house paints. It's a siphon feed gun. I shoot base coats and clear with the medium tip. I have shot hundreds of cars over the last 36 years with the same gun I own now. I've been using a Binks #7 since I started custom painting in 1976. The gun will shoot all sizes of metal flake also. Look for a used one that's been kept clean on ebay to save some money. They don't wear out so a rebuild kit will usually get them going like new. Hope this helps.

Your comments regarding pro vs dyi equipment id right on. i have a 30 gallon compressor ..and a decent mid range “hvlp” after getting erratic air flow, water vapor, etc. --and horrible results...I finally went to a 5 stage turbine sprayer. dry consistent air -only 9 psi..but 105 CFM. results have been great. I’ve painted two cars using single stage urethane and high solid clear..both fantastic..at least compared with my earlier efforts. I’ll never be as good as you...but your videos-especially your orange peel video have helped me immensely

The Gunman Yeah the gunman I love my LVLP's I swear it gives such a great finish. I want to send you one to do a review on. You might have seen them or heard of them a bit. ATOM X Line? I've got the X20 MP LVLP and about to pre-order the X27 MP LVLP which is actually a clone of the Sata 5000 except the air valve is in a different spot or so I heard atleast. Tony from learn auto body and paint channel promotes them and for the price they definitely seem like a well made quality gun to me but I've never owned or even held a devilbiss pro-lite or anything else considered top notch guns. I did get to hold and feel the Walcom Genesis Carbino and loved the way that trigger felt but that's it. It would be sweet to see you spray with them guns and see what you think of the price vs. Quality and the finishes you can get with them. I basically learned spraying with these guns well actually still learning only been painting 6 months or so now. Mainly the same cars panels like 8 different times haha damn Honda Accord 2009 with Alabaster Silver Metallic one hell of a color to learn how to not only paint but learn body work for my first time. Haha
You just rescued me from buying a 400$ hvlp. I do own a conventional gun from 2008 price range at 120$ with 1.3 and I paint my beetles as an amateur painter. I still got some orange peal that I can't solve but I try to learn from your videos..
HVLPs work well for painter decorators, a practice which use paint viscosity quite different from what is used in a bodywork.
I am in a tech college automotive refinish program, in the US. We use HVLP, because it is mandated by the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency). I use a Sata 4000B HVLP digital with a 1.3 tip. I only have this gun right now, so I spray Primer, Sealer, Base and Clear with it. I set pressure at 25 psi incoming rather than the 29psi that Sata recommends.

Total agreement, I've used lots of guns for woodwork, industrial painting and some auto.
For the average backyarder I'll say this. Devilbiss still makes the JGA. it works, it needs no improvement. Yes you'll use a little more paint but you can lay it down flat.
For fine woodworking lacquers , look at an hvlp turbine system. You eliminate compressor not keeping up, you are spraying with warm dry air, and you can use the turbine box to air dry coatings with a manifold.
For heavy use workshops and viscous coatings nothing out there works better than the sames-Kremlin airmix systems. I have 2 from the 90s and they are fantastic , the new version is better again. Be sure to be seated when reading the price quote though.
Gunman is right, for automotive even if you buy the satajet5000, or devilbiss(tekna) prolite you will not be using that hvlp aircap unless you are shooting acrylic enamel or trying to match a euro orange peel

Completely agree with gunny. I switched from hvlp to conventional after leaving shop with giant compressor and love it!
So since the guy is a cabinetmaker who paints his own cabs, and he is going to do his car too, here are some insights/feelings as another cabmaker who occasionally sprays automotive.
HVLP has helped control air consumption against the demands of more than one man using air tools- sanders, dust blowers, nailers and of course the spray booth feed. This is with a large IR compressor with a 7.5 horse motor and a 120 gallon tank. Its just way more pleasant not having the compressor constantly on.
Overspray is also a concern in the booth because the waterborne finishes can look great but then there is a lot of cleaning if the overspray is heavy.
So a lot of what your advice-seeker might be thinking about are the facts of life in a facility which isn't built as a dedicated spray room and can't be brought to that standard immediately.
I've been spraying for 2.5 years full time in the US. We use Cromax solvent base and I for some reason prefer using hv30 for heavy metallic colors but that's about it. We also do a shitload of full respray 2k direct gloss color/single stage (it's one of those budget Maaco shops, gotta start somewhere lol) and I will use te20 for that all day long. Iwata lph-400 hvlp for sealer/wet on wet, and ws400 or te20 for clear. Those two instances where I like using hvlp, I actually do find I save a tiny amount of paint but it's laughable like you said. Maybe half an oz
David Westernall thanks man, most people just give me shit when they here about where I work. I'm fortunate to work at one of the better maacos in my area. I was given the opportunity to take over the previous painters position after only working in a body shop as a prepper for about a month. I hopped on that and turns out I was pretty good and have some natural talent. I have no official education or certifications, all self taught and some training through Axalta reps. My end goal is to work here another year or two just to have the length of experience under my belt, get certified, then move on to a higher end facility. I really want to get into strictly collision repair and insurance work, enough of this full respray with cheap paint for 300$ 😂😂
Just want to ask you a question is maaco realy that bad or is it just a bit of a bad reputation i watch some videos on youtube about maaco and what i have seen its not the best but for 300 to 500 bucks you should not even complain 😉i am from europ so something like maaco is unknow to us i worked in a lower and shop for 2 years to and now i work in a higer end colision and insurance workshop we use cromax pro waterbase
kevin hekers it's all going to depend on the location and attitude/willingness to work of the employees. Most of the Maacos are franchised owned like a McDonald's.. you may have a really good or really bad experience. The one I work for is hands down the best in my area, we fix a lot of the other Maacos shit jobs lol. You just need to understand that when you go to Maaco, you get what you pay for. 300$ full respray pretty much covers the cost of paint and materials for us and that's about it. Nothing is removed, de trimmed, repaired (dents, dings, rock chips, peeling paint) unless the customer is paying for any of that to be done, which starts to up the price, but also quality of the finish a lot.
kevin hekers there's a maaco about 15 minutes down the road from us that will red Scotch Brite the entire vehicle and paint right over top... We don't do that, everything is DA sanded smooth with at least 320 grit
Ryan Johnston thanks for reacting we do alot of insurance work so if there are any stone chips scratches small dents arround the area that will get basecoat on we fix it if its in a blend panel we might push it out using some hooks and glue slide hammers put in the previous shop i had to paint right over all the damage because it was not payed work i get it if we fix everything we don't make any money
As a new painter i appreciate the info and simple breakdown. i do helmets, skateboards and motorcycles so i mainly use touch up guns. buying an lvlp now i have 3 hvlps in a 25lb compressor.

GFG-670 Gravity Gun DeVILBISS PLUS great home Gun, 1.2, 1.3, 1.4 included. Sprayed silver Acrylic Lacquer 1.4 tip, 30psi. Compressor 60gal, 5hp, 165psi. Trying base, clear next car. Thanks for all your videos. Only heard you mention the Plus, one time, not sure it’s sold outside the USA. I understand why lacquer is not a topic, but as I said base clear next, not silver, that took 3 attempts to get it right.
great explanation, You have the painting experience and as far as it goes you're absolutely right. However all those so called HVLP automotive spray guns are not really HVLP. at least most of them. I sprayed clears on kitchen cabinets professionally for years, but it was some time ago. At that point The only way to get true HVLP was to buy a dedicated turbine system with large hoses (high volume of air). I did not go that route. The other way round was to have a killer compressor, I had a 5 HP 220 volt 80 gallon tank, which you need all of, plus an industrial grade HVLP gun adapted for use as a hand held unit, cost me around 500 bucks, plus larger hose and fittings. its not just the air horns, you need the power AND volume of air to drive a gun like this. You have to move slower requiring a more steady hand, and as you said your holding the gun very close to the work. The problem is with the operator used to the old school kind of gun, he just cranks up the pressure until he is comfortable, and defeats the purpose of HVLP in the first place. Not worth the hassle unless you need the HVLP for other reasons.
Massively happy with my Tekna Pro Lite, your vids really helped me make that jump and I'm able to get quite close to the Benz factory finish with it. Cheers!
I’ve got one of those Harbor Freight special guns and it’s no prize but I got the kinks worked out of it after some modifications and it have sprayed epoxy, 2k, base, and clear with it and its 1.4mm tip and was able to get a surface with every little orange peel. There is no doubt that it is a cheap gun, and like I said I did have to do some work to it to make it function correctly but it works for a hobbyist like me.
Devilbiss guns are the best bang for the buck hands down! Great guns and great value! the most options of caps and nozzles.
Good advice gunny. I see a whole lot of people buying hvlp guns and want to use them with a home compressor.
This video is really nice to watch! I have a cheap Campbell Hausfeld DIY spray kit that is HVLP(after a lot of research) and I’ve had nothing but problems. Finish is very grainy and always seems to need a lot of polish to look professional. I also upgraded to a 20 gallon compressor and it’s still not quite right. You’re bang on when you mentioned you have to hold the gun closer, otherwise the finish is too thin and even more grainy. Thanks for the vid, I will buy a LVLP for my next project. Home Mechanic
I got an FLG5 last fall and it is fantastic. Did a quick ms clear vid on it. Highly recommend for the diy guy on a budget.

I just bought one and used it for clear and I love it! Is the only thing im going to use it for, clear. I never painted a car in my life and all my friends are in love with the paint job. They were all worry because the color I have chosen was a 3 stage paint job and sense I never painted a car before they thought I was going to screw things up, Lol. This gun made it possible for me. Right now is nice and clean and put in a very safe place. I wanted to put it underneath my pillow but my wife didn't like the idea😁😂🤣🤣.
i bought a gpi i used it on basecoat when i went to use it for my clear i had an uneven fan pattern cleaned it and still was uneven pattern it sprays on the top and on the bottom but nothing in the middle of the fan pattern dont know y? ant suggestions

I got a HVLP spray gun at home but I didn't like the way the paint job came out when painted my old truck it was metallic bright silver. But my paint used was cheap grade paint bought on eBay a paint called TNT automotive paint. My spray gun was very cheap HVLP and it was 29.99 at Harbor Freight got it with a warranty. I wouldn't use that spray gun again. In the future rather get the Black Widow but am not experienced in auto painting yet because this year was the first year had painted a vehicle. But with any spray gun my experience is a long way from being great now. I rather use single stage paint in future if paint again though.
Just had to give away my Bellaria 1.3 because here in the states I can’t have it in my shop! Gonna miss that gun but it ended up in good hands

Being a spray painter myself I’ve found HVLP to be a new ball game especially coming to the paint mix and usually a thicker mix which has more of a chance to have runs or droops until using it a few times if your a more common conventional spray painter with high pressure guns
Try holding the gun very close and go nice and fast.
@@TheGunmanChannel Yes i paint bath tubs and HVLP was the first setup to do this bath being the start of my new career and with the thickness of the hose made it a challenge on itself let alone using a lower pressure and a bulkier heavy gun but they serve their purpose 👍🏼

I went for the Sharpe Razor LVLP. It looks like a winner.
I have an older FLG3 that came with 1.3, 1.5 and 1.8 tips and I have been very happy with it, I have only done a few projects with it so it is basically still new I am very meticulous when it clean it so it should be good for a long time.
I always thought the hvlp guns came with it’s own little compressor.

He doesn't know what he's talking about I use those type of guns with a 8 gallon compressor and painted a whole car with no problem.
The US equivalent of the FLG5 is the DeVilbiss FLG5.
It is available here in the US.
@@angelcorella177 What he is saying is that you would have had a better time with a non-hvlp gun. You would have more time to spray and less time waiting for the compressor to fill. You could paint a car with a bicycle pump too if you really wanted to.... but why?
I'm an aspiring painter who works at a body shop. Should I go for HVLP guns or High Efficiency guns? I see both when I shop. Which one is better?
This is an excellent video. I always sought out a HVLP with some of it attributed to that thinking "this is new so its better" but also because I tried to understand that it meant better transfer efficiency and so I assumed as a DIY/hobby guy i would be spending less money on paint. I think this is kind of a false assumption on my part because if i only paint 1 car a year how much paint and money will i really save? Also saving air is probably more important as I only have a 60 gallon home shop type compressor.
I plan on painting my first car soon. This and the rest your vids are helping me tremendously.
Good point man! Appreciated, i'm plannin to buy a 5hp with 60 gallons tank but its too expensive. Now i think 2 to 3 hp air compressor with 30 gallon tank will do by just using rp or lvlp. spraygun.
The devilbiss flg5 is a good gun for home spraying..ill use it alot and thats a small priced gun and you can spray cars in the booth..did a few cars and came out awesome..
Grew up on regular guns. Switched to HVLP over 20 years ago. As with anything, become proficient in your craft. Way lees overspray. A properly dialed in HVLP works great and puts paint on the substrate - not wasted in the air.
Also, shouldnt assume a hobbyist has a small compressor! 60-80 gallon tank and 7+ HP when I was a teenage hobbyist.

I like this guy and trust him . I’m going to buy one gun for spraying at home. It takes 9.8 cfm to run the flg-5 , which is still a bunch. I am replacing my pancake with a kobalt 2 stage 60 gal compressor. It should run it fine. I’ll never paint an entire car with it. Just repair and maybe some panel painting if I get brave. Currently painting an Isuzu npr with spray cans so this would be a huge jump up.
Ive recently bought a sata 5000 hvlp for our standox water system and its fantastic , spraying at 1.6bar . Ive had to readjusted my brain to how much paint im mixing up coming off my gti pro lite as its using much less paint .

Thanks for the video. My best friend has painted for almost 40 years and he has always used a develbiss. I have only needed a spray gun once to paint PEGBOARD for my shop. I went to harbor freight and got the cheapest one they had ,and it did fine. Even if I don't spray anything ( My friend will spray it for me) I just like to learn ( I wish I wanted to learn when I was 16) 😂 Any way thanks for the video. I always knew what HVLP ment but not how it worked, but you cleared that up. Now if you could just explain a woman that simple then you would have the answer man has been looking for (Adam started trying to get Into Eav's fig leaves)😂😂😂😂
Thank you, and you are correct. I used to paint aircraft and sports cars years ago and flawless finishes. Went to paint my backhoe and a car with a HVLP gun I picked up on Ebay and I could not get a decent finish no matter what I tried. Back in the day I used a cheap sharp gun with bottom tank/bottle and won auto shows with my paint jobs. Now I have the so called must have HVLP guns and nothing but ugly finishes. I actually thought it was bad paint I was using or the reducer was no good, or I was no good. I also have a giant compressor and a high performance gas compressor I built and both will run 4 paint guns at the same time so it's not my air supply. You have just convinced me to get a new gun. tell that to the government in CA. they do allow the TE 20 now as hvlp in most areas of CA. but for a while that was not even legal. You are right about how much paint they use and they also put about the same amount of emissions in the air either way.

Currently running a DeVilbiss Finishline 4 FLG-670 Solvent Based HVLP, love the gun. It does beautiful finishes, super smooth. I don't understand your objection of the HVLP gun.

Daniel Lawson. I'm also just getting started. this video saved me about 200 dollars. I was going to buy an HVLP. I thought it ment high volume of paint with less air pressure. my budget is limited, and I can't afford a large compressor.

Between the devilbiss 802342 and 802343. Which will you get? I am painting 5 6ft long steel small doors and a few gates ( small welding business). My compressor is an 8 gallon hotdog Husky I got on sale for $99 at the Home Depot
What you not understanding is that we don't all have screw compressors, I use lvlp for my custom bike tanks, so controlable

I used conventional for years then bought myself a small HVLP (Sata Minijet) for clear coat repairs. I don't notice a massive difference. Perhaps less prone to orange peel given lower pressure? Feels like more overspray (which might be my imagination) But then overall, it's a better gun than I used to use. I have 17cfm compressor which seems to keep up with it. If I was to buy another full size gun, it would be a conventional.

I use a sprayfine turnbine HVLP spray system to paint cars the thing I like about the HVLP as I hardly ever get any fisheye and never get orange peel on my panels or hoods doors are fenders the biggest thing you got to learn is your needle size I also use an inflatable portable air booths I got one of the biggest ones they make 17 ft wide 35 ft long and about 13 and a half feet tall it's a pressurized booth between them two you don't have to worry about fish eye orange peeling or anyting and with a turbine HVLP it hates the paint and dries quickly
Yeah I'm a cabinet sprayer, and use all the different aircaps etc.
Conventional to me is a great finish(old skool) but the transfer efficiency is bad.
Compliant is basically transtech etc Achieves the required Transfer efficiency of hvlp, 65% and using less air volume than hvlp.
Hvlp is basically over 65% transfer efficiency but requires higher volume of air compared to compliant.
We use a pump and a Kremlin gun in cabinet spraying. This has a hvlp aircap but the difference here is the tip produces the fan pattern, and the air from the horns is just to get rid of the tails in the pattern. Can achieve 86%percent transfer efficiency, and spray inside cabinet etc because the air pressure is really low.
Used to use flg5 guns daily and the are a perfect balance between cost and performance. Probably sprayed around 20 thousand kitchen doors a year with a flg 5 gun.
I.used to use 2 different flg5 guns, and I noticed I always had a favourite, so i think the build quality is less than the gti etc. But I don't think you would know unless you used every gun
Let me pick your brains for a bit. What nozzle sizes you use for stains, water varnish, latex paints? Do you spray latex with gravity feed guns? If yes, how do you thin it, do you use Floetrol?
Hi Gunman, love your videos and reviews. I bought an FLG 4 last week, HVLP as you know, with the 3 tips. it was chosen based on quality, price ($400), and availability here in Canada. Choices limited. I have watched most of your videos and reviews on the gun, and HVLP in general and after some research found Devilbiss Dv690000 Flg-1-1 Air Cap no. 1 which is listed as a standard cap for my gun. Can you comment on your experience with it or perhaps let me know if you have done a review of the air cap? I will be ordering it in the next couple of weeks and was hoping it would help me as a DIYer. I have a 60 gallon compressor with specs that are just a bit better than minimum recommended for the hvlp gun. Any advise would be appreciated.
Also do you know of any other tips that may fit the gun from your experience?

great vid man,,, I thought HVLP was hi viscosity low pressure,,, doh haha, I remember my friend painting with a new devilbiss jga in the 90's perfect out the gun finish as well,,,,, FLG5 you say, devilbiss was the go to name for pro guns back then, its a name you can trust
So LVLP less over-spray, more economic with slow application AND RP/HTE are higher pressure but waste a bit more paint basically, better atomization with a nicer finish than LVLP??? Did I get this right? And we DON"T need HVLP for home use ...
I'm really confused by this video, he says don't buy HVLP but doesn't mention what the alternative is to DIY, and at the same time recommends FLG-5 which after quick google comes under HVLP guns....

GRIDMASTER6 when I look up the flg5 it says it’s hvlp. I thought he was recommending lvlp guns. Do you know why he is talking about that gun?
Gunny m8 here in Europe we have to use hvlp and to be honest we've never had atomisation issues ,However for those at home the big plus for hvlp is the reduced overspray especially if you use a turbine set up .I agree you need to use a bit closer to your work piece . I've been using uhs clear in my hvlp with no probs ,so I think it's more of set up to suit your needs wether it's conventional or hvlp each to there own . Cheers for the vid Gunny
I've been wanting a decent spray gun but I too cannot afford a 5 to $800 spray gun to only use it twice a year maybe. I've been leaning towards the finish line from Devilbiss after hearing this I'll probably go buy one. Thanks for all your videos and reviews. Now I'm going to go paint some shit!

A painter told me when I was just starting out that it also requires a bigger air hose in the booth for a true help setup.

As a bathroom refinisher, I spray high gloss acrylic polyurethane. Would a standard gun be better for this and could I still run my hvlp turbine behind it? What would the differences be?
What is a good spray gun to buy since you said don't buy a HVLP spray gun. I got a HVLP spray gun at Harbor Freight it was 29.99 one but am a beginner auto painter still now started in June but I never got a great finish from a HVLP spray gun as a beginner I want to move up to a better spray gun for next year glad I saw your video because I would of probably bought a HVLP again because was looking at Black Widow spray gun today that was HVLP. But now not gonna get a HVLP spray gun. Being a beginner HVLP spray gun was a start but not gonna be using in future. I used it on a bright silver metallic truck that am giving to brother but now since I watched this video glad won't deal with HVLP now. Just need to get the right one now so when I start practicing next year probably be in the spring because it's getting colder in Michigan in United States where I live and after this month it probably be snowing in November.
Quick question. As for paint (automotive single stage) usage from guns. How does an HVLP compare to an old school siphon feed gun? My best siphon feed is a Binks #7 for comparison. Thanks in advance for your answer.
