  • The late Australian actor Rod Taylor, whose most recent role is in Quentin Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds, was a versatile and popular leading man, equally adept at romantic comedy, adventure and dramatic roles. Taylor's rugged on-screen and off-screen persona created a brand of Australian masculinity now enjoyed by actors such as Russell Crowe, Hugh Jackman and Chris Hemsworth. During the 1950s through to the 1970s, he featured in many "A list" films: The VIP's, The Birds, The Time Machine, 36 Hours, Sunday in New York, Young Cassidy, The Glass Bottom Boat, Hotel, and Zabriski Point. He was one of the first leading actors to voice a Disney animated character when he portrayed the hero, Pongo, in 101 Dalmatians. He worked with Directors such as the legendary Alfred Hitchcock, George Stevens, Michelangelo Antonioni, John Ford and George Pal.
He made a seamless transition from feature films to TV and starred in popular TV series such Hong Kong, Bearcats, Murder She Wrote, Falcon's Crest and Walker - Texas Ranger. In Rod Taylor: Pulling No Punches, a variety of actors, film critics, writers, directors and Rod reflect on his colourful life and career which spanned more than 50 years. Rod Taylor: Pulling No Punches features Maggie Smith, Tippi Hedren, Angela Lansbury, Veronica Cartwright, Baz Luhrmann, Stephan Elliott, Susie Porter, Bryan Brown, Jack Thompson, Keith Michell and Rod himself.

My favorite Sci-Fi film as a kid was "The Time Machine". Still is.

This is one of the reasons to love CZcams because you can find cool documentaries about somewhat underrated performers like Rod Taylor and learn things about them you never knew.

He was strong, handsome, powerful actor. In any movie, all eyes are on him, he literally fills the screen effortlessly. He could do everything: drama, comedy, rom-coms, action adventure. So versatile, and his delivery of lines was light and exact. Just watch the interplay between him and Maggie Smith or Tippi Hedren. Stars like this only come around in our orbit once in awhile, and he was engagingly watchable.

What a fantastic documentary. One of my all-time favorite actors. My favorites of his flicks are:
1- Darker Than Amber- The original cut of the fight scene is the greatest fight in cinema history imo.
2- Dark of The Sun- For me, this is the greatest mercenary flick ever made. A brutal, brutal flick. One of the greatest adventure movies ever made.
3- The Time Machine- Even all these decades later, my all-time favorite Sci-Fi flicks ever made. Few things are as fun as seeing Rod Taylor beat the ever living crap out of Morlocks while saving Yvette Mimieux.

DARK OF THE SUN aka THE MERCENARIES is my most beloved Rod Taylor movie, a masterpiece of hard hitting action. I wish he would have done more such bleak action flicks.
Have seen DARKER THAN AMBER only once, I probably have to give it another viewing.
Btw, it should have been mentioned that Errol Flynn was from Down Under as well. This docu gives the impression that Rod was the first Aussie who hit it big in movies. He was the 2nd, but that is no "shame" at all.

This could have been... and should have been a 2 Hour documentary. One of my favorite actors growing up

One of the very best there was or will be. So few have such adaptability, even fewer can play so many different types of roles, in so many genres.💖👍⚘🌟

Bonjour. En effet, je pense que Rod Taylor avait un don ou alors il savait très (mais TRES) bien interpréter.

One of the early Aussie imports. Taylor starred in one of my favorite Twiight Zone episodes called " And When the Sky was Opened. " A year later I saw him in The Time Machine in 1960. Next came Hitchcock 's The Birds. I always enjoyed him in any movie he appeared in from then on. He would have been a great James Bond.
