Today we will be talking about the ONE thing that I feel every room needs- a focal point. A focal wall or focal point is simply a statement-making element that brings balance to a room. In the bedroom, it’s the bed. In the dining room, it’s usually the dining table, chairs, and a beautiful light fixture above the table. But what about the living room? There are so many elements to a living space that can become the focal point, that it may not be immediately obvious which walls to prioritize.

It always helps to lock down a floor plan before you consider the walls Debra. Not every wall needs to be filled, often times a room needs negative space to breathe 👍🏻

Yes, pls do a wallpaper video! I have an open concept dining and living room, and the shared wall is the focal wall. In the dining room, the table is up against the wall, and in the living room, I put the upright piano against the wall, since music is the primary function of that room. So I'll have two main focal areas along one long wall. I'm thinking of using textured wallpaper to tie it together, but not really sure how to do it. Also I don't know what to do with the wall space in between my living and dining areas....
Please do a focal wall video for open concept spaces!
You don’t do anything between that space Jade. Unless you’re trying to draw focus away from the dining and living rooms. Addressing every blank space makes a room feel heavier than it needs to be. Trust the edit! 🙌🏻☺️

Definitely interested in seeing a wallpaper video! We have an idea to make the small wall in our rectangular shaped dining room the focal wall with a really cool wallpaper, but it has a window right in the middle of the wall. Not sure if that will work. We plan to not use curtains because then that would just cover up most of the wallpaper, and instead using some kind of shades that will just sit right in the window frame. I felt very encouraged to see examples of assymetry in some of your focal wall examples. I have been so frustrated with the way my doorways and my central ceiling lights are off-centre with regard to my windows and hallway/room openings. It has really bothered me that i cant get a symmetrical layout for so many of my walls, and I was worried that accentuating the assymetry would just look weird. Now i can see that it can work! i do hope you would consider doing a whole video on where to start to build an asymmetrical interior which looks balanced and intentional in the end, instead of looking like nothing is quite the right size, even when it is.
It’s all about focusing on the furniture plan to create a statement. Once you lock down the functional zones, what happens on the walls can support it
